This paper focuses on interference coordination between the small cell and macro cell tiers of a wireless access network. We propose a new perspective based on a modelfree learning strategy, not ...requiring any previous knowledge about the network (e.g., topology, interference graph, scheduling algorithms). Our approach is based on a stochastic optimization algorithm known as Response Surface Methodology, that we use to learn the optimal parameter configuration during network operation (online learning) adapting to changes on network conditions (e.g., traffic, user positions). The result is a simple, effective and flexible mechanism that outperforms previous proposals. As a case study we apply our scheme to the dynamic adjustment of LTE-A eICIC parameters (CRE bias and ABS ratio).
Outdoor sport practitioners can improve greatly their results if they train at the right intensity. Nevertheless, in common training systems the athlete's performance is used for evaluation at the ...end of the exercises, and the sensed data is incomplete because only human biometrics are analyzed. These systems do not consider environmental conditions, which may have direct influence on athlete's performance during training. In this paper, we present the system architecture and implementation of an ambient intelligence assistant for runners. Our system is composed of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) deployed over a cross-country running circuit, and by mobile elements carried by the users, which monitor their heart rate (HR). The goal is to select, for a given user, suitable tracks where the heart rate will be in the selected HR range. The decision-taking process is based on k-NN classification and has achieved a success classification ratio of 70%.

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) was flown on the space shuttle Discovery during flight STS-91 in a 51.7° orbit at altitudes between 320 and 390
km. A total of 2.86×10
6 helium nuclei were ...observed in the rigidity range 1 to 140
GV. No antihelium nuclei were detected at any rigidity. An upper limit on the flux ratio of antihelium to helium of <1.1×10
−6 is obtained.

The virtualization of radio access networks (vRAN) is the last milestone in the NFV revolution. However, the complex dependencies between computing and radio resources make vRAN resource control ...particularly daunting. We present vrAIn, a dynamic resource controller for vRANs based on deep reinforcement learning. First, we use an autoencoder to project high-dimensional context data (traffic and signal quality patterns) into a latent representation. Then, we use a deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm based on an actor-critic neural network structure and a classifier to map (encoded) contexts into resource control decisions. We have implemented vrAIn using an open-source LTE stack over different platforms. Our results show that vrAIn successfully derives appropriate compute and radio control actions irrespective of the platform and context: (i) it provides savings in computational capacity of up to 30% over CPU-unaware methods; (ii) it improves the probability of meeting QoS targets by 25% over static allocation policies using similar CPU resources in average; (iii) upon CPU capacity shortage, it improves throughput performance by 25% over state-of-the-art schemes; and (iv) it performs close to optimal policies resulting from an offline oracle. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that thoroughly studies the computational behavior of vRANs, and the first approach to a model-free solution that does not need to assume any particular vRAN platform or system conditions.
The inhibitory effect of two neo-clerodane diterpenoids, E-isolinaridial (EI) and its methylketone derivative (EIM), isolated from Linaria saxatilis var. glutinosa, on PLA2 and other enzyme ...activities involved in the inflammatory process was studied. Both compounds inhibited human synovial sPLA2 in a concentration-dependent manner with IC50 values of 0.20 and 0.49 microM, respectively, similar to scalaradial. Besides, these compounds decreased the cell-free 5-lipoxygenase activity and A23187-induced neutrophil LTB4 biosynthesis. Another function of human neutrophils, such as receptor-mediated degranulation, was also significantly reduced. In contrast, none of the compounds affected superoxide generation in leukocytes, or cyclooxygenase-1, cyclooxygenase-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase activities in cell-free assays.
Cooling for power electronics in leisure vessels has so far been based in the use of forced air, even though such vessels are surrounded by water which can ultimately be used to dump the heat ...developed by power electronics converters and electrical machines. Some of the reasons to avoid the use of sea water for cooling are the need to deal with biological-fouling, salt water, corrosion, and condensation. We propose to apply a new concept where pre-filtered seawater is used to cool down power electronic modules in order to significantly reduce the size of the cooling system. A new type of cold plate with direct flow of seawater has been designed considering the mentioned challenges. The cold plate will cool down a 5kW (10kW peak) power electronics module. Such module consists of a 3 kW 3-phase AC-DC rectifier, a 2 kW (10kW peak) full-bridge DC-DC converter and a 5 kW (10 kW peak) DC-AC single phase inverter.
Three 2-polyprenyl-1,4-hydroquinone derivatives (2-heptaprenyl-1,4-hydroquinone: IS1, 2-octaprenyl-1,4-hydroquinone: IS2 and 2-24-hydroxy-octaprenyl-1,4-hydroquinone: IS3) isolated from the ...Mediterranean sponge Ircinia spinosula, were evaluated for effects on phospholipase A2 activity of different origin (Naja naja venom, human recombinant synovial fluid and bee venom), as well as on human neutrophil function and mouse ear oedema induced by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA). IS1 interacted minimally with these responses. In contrast, IS2 and IS3 inhibited human recombinant synovial phospholipase A2 in a concentration-dependent manner, with minor effects on the rest of the enzymes. Both compounds slightly affected superoxide generation and degranulation in human neutrophils, whereas they decreased thromboxane B2 and leukotriene B4 synthesis and release in a mixed suspension of human platelets and neutrophils stimulated by ionophore A23187, with IC50 values in the microM range. IS3 was the most effective inhibitor of the synthesis of thromboxane B2 by human platelet microsomes and of leukotriene B4 by high speed supernatants from human neutrophils. IS2 and IS3 showed topical anti-inflammatory activity against the TPA-induced ear inflammation in mice, with similar effects on oedema and a higher inhibition of IS3 on leukocyte migration, estimated as myeloperoxidase activity in supernatants of ear homogenates. Some structure-activity relationships were established since differences in the prenylated chain attached to the hydroquinone moiety result in important modifications of these inflammatory responses.
Ecosystem services from wetlands include products such as food, water, fibers, timber, medicinal plants, and genetic resources for agriculture. One of the most abundant supplies is the raw material ...for basketry. In this study we aim to document the role of wetland plants as resources for basketry and broom-making in the Guadiana river basin and to analyze the local traditional knowledge of the species used in the area. We describe different types of baskets and other artifacts, and document basketry techniques. We found 30 species belonging to 12 families, 18 of them occurring in wetlands, four in irrigated fields, and seven in the adjacent dry territories. Twenty species are used in the manufacture of brooms. Twenty two types of basketry artifacts are described with their uses. The area shows a relevant cultural heritage, not merely as it was in the past, but also adapted to the new cultural and social contexts. The degradation and loss of wetlands in central Spain threatens these ecosystems and their associated cultural heritage. We suggest the declaration of this intangible human heritage as the “Culture of the Mediterranean Wetlands” before it disappears.
