Aquaponics is an agricultural practice incorporating aquaculture and hydroponic principles. This study assesses the current system design and production practices of the aquaponic industry, compares ...these metrics by stakeholder group, identifies trends, and provides recommendations for future development. An electronic survey of aquaponic stakeholders was conducted from December 2019 to June 2020 targeting hobbyists, producers, and educators from various aquaponic-focused professional associations, email and social media groups. Of 378 total responses, 84% came from the United States and were clustered in plant hardiness zones five to nine. Aquaponic systems were commonly homemade/do-it-yourself (DIY), many of which incorporated commercially available (turn-key) technology. Most growers used coupled systems that integrated recirculating aquaculture systems and either deep-water culture (DWC) or media bed hydroponic units. Common plant lighting sources were sunlight and light emitting diode (LED). Water sources were typically municipal or wells. Personal labor input was typically less than 20 hrs/wk. Funding sources were primarily personal funds, followed by government grants, and private investor funds. System sizes varied greatly, but the median area was 50 to 500 ft2 for hobbyists and educators and 500 to 3,000 ft2 for producers. Respondents commonly sold vegetable produce, training and education, food fish, and microgreens. Tilapia and ornamental fish were commonly grown, with 16 other species reported. Common crops were lettuce, leafy greens, basil, tomatoes, peppers, and herbs with many additional lesser-grown crops reported, including cannabis. Overall, the industry still growing, with a large portion of stakeholders having less than two years of experience. However, veteran growers have remained in operation, particularly in the producer and educator groups. The survey results suggest a shift away from outdoor systems, media beds, tomatoes, ornamental fish, and perch production, and a shift toward decoupled systems, DWC, drip irrigation, and wicking beds, larger system area, leafy greens, and trout/salmon production compared to previous industry surveys. The reduced diversity of plant species grown suggest some level of crop standardization. Commercial producers tended to sell more types of products than other stakeholders, suggesting that diversification of offerings may be key to profitability. The combined production area specified by respondents indicates the industry has grown substantially in recent years. Finally, the presence of bank loan-funded operations suggests increased knowledge and comfort with aquaponics among lenders.

In vitro data suggest that a subgroup of NLR proteins, including NLRP12, inhibits the transcription factor NF-κB, although physiologic and disease-relevant evidence is largely missing. Dysregulated ...NF-κB activity is associated with colonic inflammation and cancer, and we found Nlrp12−/− mice were highly susceptible to colitis and colitis-associated colon cancer. Polyps isolated from Nlrp12−/− mice showed elevated noncanonical NF-κB activation and increased expression of target genes that were associated with cancer, including Cxcl13 and Cxcl12. NLRP12 negatively regulated ERK and AKT signaling pathways in affected tumor tissues. Both hematopoietic- and nonhematopoietic-derived NLRP12 contributed to inflammation, but the latter dominantly contributed to tumorigenesis. The noncanonical NF-κB pathway was regulated upon degradation of TRAF3 and activation of NIK. NLRP12 interacted with both NIK and TRAF3, and Nlrp12−/− cells have constitutively elevated NIK, p100 processing to p52 and reduced TRAF3. Thus, NLRP12 is a checkpoint of noncanonical NF-κB, inflammation, and tumorigenesis.

Impacts of global climate change on terrestrial ecosystems are imperfectly constrained by ecosystem models and direct observations. Pervasive ecosystem transformations occurred in response to warming ...and associated climatic changes during the last glacial-to-interglacial transition, which was comparable in magnitude to warming projected for the next century under high-emission scenarios. We reviewed 594 published paleoecological records to examine compositional and structural changes in terrestrial vegetation since the last glacial period and to project the magnitudes of ecosystem transformations under alternative future emission scenarios. Our results indicate that terrestrial ecosystems are highly sensitive to temperature change and suggest that, without major reductions in greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere, terrestrial ecosystems worldwide are at risk of major transformation, with accompanying disruption of ecosystem services and impacts on biodiversity.
The RIS mechanism in austenitic and ferritic–martensitic (F–M) alloys is addressed by both atomic-scale modeling and experiment. Ab initio based modeling shows that the inverse Kirkendall mechanism ...for Cr in austenitic Ni-based systems is consistent with the observed Cr depletion, but that the result may be a balance of significant contributions from both vacancy and interstitial fluxes. In the F–M alloy system Kinetic Lattice Monte Carlo (KLMC) simulations of Cr segregation show that depending on the binding and diffusion energetics of Cr with vacancies, Cr diffusion by a vacancy mechanism can be either faster or slower than Fe. Experimental results show that RIS depends on the alloy composition and irradiation temperature, with grain boundary Cr enrichment occurring in the alloy with lower Cr (T91) and at lower temperature (400
°C), and depletion occurring in higher Cr alloys (HT9 and HCM12A) and at higher irradiation temperature (500
°C). Modeling results are entirely consistent with the expectations of an inverse Kirkendall mechanism determined by the relative rate of Cr to Fe diffusion.
When an enteral feeding tube (EFT) is placed, it is not always known how long this nutrition support intervention will be needed. As a result, the type of device the patient originally has placed may ...not match the function it is required to serve or the lifestyle needs of the patient throughout their enteral nutrition journey. Medicare considers an EFT a prosthetic device, as it is replacing a permanently inoperable or nonfunctioning organ. If we think about an EFT the same way we think about a prosthetic limb, one that needs to be customized to meet all of the patient's functional and lifestyle needs, we can also begin to think beyond the procedure room and carefully consider a variety of factors that impact the patient at home receiving enteral nutrition. Proper fit, function, and style is essential in order for the patient to have a positive relationship with their EFT, contributing to their successful home enteral nutrition experience. Clinicians who care for these patients in any setting and in any capacity would benefit from enhancing their understanding of available EFT options, their design components, and available methods of placement. Many home care and outpatient clinicians adopt the role of patient advocate as it relates to a patient's enteral nutrition journey, and this expanded knowledge could be used to benefit the patient by improving their overall enteral nutrition experience and ultimately their relationship with their “prosthetic.”
We used an online survey to document challenges experienced by aquaponic hobbyists (n = 81), producers (n = 117), and educators (n = 75). Responses were distilled into the following categories: 1) ...operations and management; 2) facilities, location, and system design; 3) knowledge and educational resources; 4) funding; 5) economic viability; 6) plant culture; 7) marketing and distribution; 8) fish culture; 9) human factors; 10) regulations and certifications. Training and research in these areas are needed to advance the aquaponics industry.
Designing materials for performance in high-radiation fields can be accelerated through a carefully chosen combination of advanced multiscale modeling paired with appropriate experimental validation. ...The studies reported in this work, the combined efforts of six universities working together as the Consortium on Cladding and Structural Materials, use that approach to focus on improving the scientific basis for the response of ferritic–martensitic steels to irradiation. A combination of modern modeling techniques with controlled experimentation has specifically focused on improving the understanding of radiation-induced segregation, precipitate formation and growth under radiation, the stability of oxide nanoclusters, and the development of dislocation networks under radiation. Experimental studies use both model and commercial alloys, irradiated with both ion beams and neutrons. Transmission electron microscopy and atom probe are combined with both first-principles and rate theory approaches to advance the understanding of ferritic–martensitic steels.
Background In September 2014, wound clinic A reported a cluster of group A Streptococcus (GAS) infections to public health authorities. Although clinic providers were individually licensed, the ...clinic, affiliated with hospital A, was not licensed or subject to regulation. We investigated to identify cases, determine risk factors, and implement control measures. Methods A case was defined as GAS isolation from a wound or blood specimen during March 28-November 19, 2014, from a patient treated at wound clinic A or by a wound clinic A provider within the previous 7 days. All wound clinic A staff were screened for GAS carriage. Wound care procedures were assessed for adherence to infection control principles and possible GAS transmission routes. Results We identified 16 patients with 19 unique infections: 9 (56%) patients required hospitalization, and 7 (44%) required surgical debridement procedures. One patient died. Six (37%) patients received negative pressure wound therapy at GAS onset. Staff self-screening found no GAS carriers. Breaches in infection control and poor wound care practices were widespread. Conclusions This GAS outbreak was associated with a wound care clinic not subject to state or federal regulation. Lapses in infection control practices and inadequate oversight contributed to the outbreak.
BACKGROUND:Hallux valgus deformity in the immature patient can be difficult to manage, as osteotomy can result in recurrence with additional growth. Lateral hemiepiphysiodesis of the first metatarsal ...offers a promising alternative, by permitting gradual correction of the intermetatarsal angle with growth. An important limitation of this approach is the lack of normative tables of first metatarsal growth to guide timing of intervention.
METHODS:First metatarsal lengths were measured from anteroposterior foot radiographs of children. For females, 95 patients totaling 894 radiographs were used ranging from 6 months to 18 years of age. For males, 122 patients totaling 1018 radiographs were measured ranging from 8 months to 19.5 years of age. All patients with image series including a closed proximal metatarsal physis were sorted into an older group, with multipliers generated by setting last image to a multiplier of 1. Patients with serial imaging not inclusive of a closed physis were classified as a younger group, with multipliers based off of the multiplier at age 7 from the older group. First metatarsal multiplier values were then compared with published multiplier values for the overall foot.
RESULTS:For both females and males, the multipliers followed a logarithmic curve versus age, with R values of 0.921 and 0.888, respectively. Comparison of the first metatarsal multiplier values with previously studied multiplier values of the entire foot showed high correlation with ICC=0.955 for females and ICC=0.969 for males.
CONCLUSIONS:The pattern of growth of the first metatarsal follows a logarithmic regression curve. These normative tables allow for clinical prediction of first metatarsal remaining growth based on age and sex, and in turn guide timing of hemiepiphysiodesis for the surgical correction of hallux valgus deformity.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE:The normative tables generated in this study can be used for the calculation of hemiepiphysiodesis and the timing of intervention. Future clinical correlation studies will be important.
