Treads of scrap tires present low contents of inorganic fillers and a large amount of carbon black. In this work, this material was treated with potassium hydroxide and zinc chloride followed by ...pyrolysis at 500 and 700 °C. The ability to remove methylene blue and methyl orange were investigated under environmental conditions of pH and concentration. Carbons obtained with KOH at 700 °C present superior adsorption capacity. A simulation of this process permitted the characterization of the gases which contributed to surface development. The obtained products present a mesoporous structure and narrow particle size distribution. The presence of contaminants originated from these carbons was investigated in the aqueous media. The absence of zinc and sulfur releasing and the excellent ability to remove organic dye make these materials useful in the treatment of waste water.
We investigated endothelial and autonomic nervous functions after bariatric surgery. For this, we prospectively recruited 40 patients for bariatric surgery or medical treatment (20 in each group). ...Heart rate variability (HRV) and endothelial function were evaluated before and 3 months after treatments. Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), insulin, and glucose at fasting and 30 and 60 min after a standard 300-kcal meal were also analyzed. Surgery but not medical care increased HRV in all time-domain variables, while frequency-domain variables, vascular elasticity, and endothelial reactivity did not change. Changes in GLP-1 and insulin resistance markers did not correlate with HRV. After 3 months, bariatric surgery improved the parasympathetic activity of cardiac autonomic function. Colon adenocarcinoma is a disease expanding worldwide. Cancer of colon and rectum are among the top ten most insidious types in Brazil. In vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated the efficacy of ...the hormone melatonin to prevent and reduce tumor growth. However, there are only few studies addressing the action of melatonin on Caco-2 cells. Thus, the cytotoxic effect of melatonin on the ultrastructure of Caco-2 cells was investigated. The MTT colorimetric method was used to assess the cytotoxicity. A total of 2×106cells/mL were seeded in microplates and incubated at 50, 25, 12.5, 6.25, 3.125, 1.56, 0.78 and 0.0 (control) μg/mL of melatonin. For ultrastructural analysis concentrations with low, medium and high cytotoxicity plus the control were used for ultrastructural analysis. The concentrations 50, 1.56 and 0.78μg/mL of melatonin showed low, medium and high cytotoxicity, respectively. Ultrastructurally, the control tumor cells were shown to be preserved. Caco-2 cells showed morphological changes at 50μg/mL of melatonin, with numerous vacuoles, mitochondrial degeneration and reduced glycogen. However, Caco-2 cells also showed altered morphology in treatments at 1.56 and 0.78μg/mL of melatonin with characteristics of cells in degeneration by the presence of numerous vacuoles, absence of microvilli, mitochondrial degeneration and nuclear fragmentation. Thus, one can infer that concentrations of 1.56 and 0.78μg/mL of melatonin promote cytotoxicity in Caco-2 cells, which can probably be related to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
