The last illness of Philip II (summer 1598) is a privileged observatory to reflect, in a historical and situated perspective, on the suffering caused by the pain of others in the 16th century. Based on the analysis of sources produced by various witnesses of the event, the article first examines the place that pain occupies in the accounts of the king’s last months. It then aims to deconstruct the edifying representations that present a stoic and pious king accepting as a good martyr the pains that were sent to him from heaven, and to show how a space of negotiation between Philip II and his doctors and surgeons was defined around pain. Particular attention is paid to the way in which these health actors, directly involved in the management of a delicate situation, perceive the king’s pain and seek to deal with it, while being subject to the pressures imposed on them by the care of this illustrious patient.
This article sets out to throw light on the intellectual and scientific activities of a group of Spanish humanists associated with the diplomat, aristocrat, and writer Diego Hurtado de Mendoza in the ...course of his fifteen years in Venice, Trent, and Rome, focusing on two aspects that have been neglected to date. These are (a) the integration of practices connected with the study of nature (herborizing expeditions and the production of herbaria) with the work of collating, translating, and commenting on classical texts dealing with natural history and materia medica; and (b) the insertion of these scientific activities in Italy by the Spanish subjects of the Emperor Charles V within the broader context of a specific cultural policy. This policy would later be fleshed out in the scientific project of the Spanish Crown under Philip II, inseparable as it was from the monarch’s political and religious policy.
The article explores the relationship between late 16th-century Rome and the nature of an extreme Orient, starting with the case of the arrival in the city of the popes of a female specimen of a rare ...bird too quickly named Avis Japonica by the papal physician Michele Mercati. At first, the reflection focuses on the presence and significance of this bird within the epistemological and geopolitical world that Mercati defined by the Vatican between the space of a museum and the pages of a book to both of which he gave the name Metallotheca. Then, following the traces of other birds that presented identical characteristics to the Aviscalled Japonica among the historiae, representations and naturalistic collections of 16th century Europe, the analysis dwells on the epistemological, symbolic and political difficulties and implications that the study of the nature of distant worlds could assume in the papal Rome.
Since 1458, papal sources attest the presence of physicians assisting cardinals during the pontifical election. This presence was not purely formal. In this framework, doctors played different roles ...and sometimes their activities affected the results of the Conclave. In this sense, the Conclave could be considered as a « lieu de médecine » and an original viewpoint on the relationship between medicine and Christianity. Crossing medical sources related to the medical practices or produced by institutions or actors involved in the Conclave, the article offers a first glance on medical presence and activity in this particular context. Firstly we offer a general survey of the different physicians working during the early modern Conclaves and consider the way in which this function affected their career. We paid particular attention to the analysis of the criteria of their nomination. Secondly we analyze their specific functions during pontifical elections and the way in which they interacted with the proceeding of the Conclave.
