Die Studien und Texte zur Sozialgeschichte der Literatur (STSL)veröffentlichen seit 1975 herausragende literatur-, geschichts- und kulturwissenschaftliche Arbeiten zur vornehmlich deutschen Literatur ...vom Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart. Schwerpunkt der literaturgeschichtlichen und theoretischen Abhandlungen sowie der Quellen- und Materialienbände ist das Verhältnis von literarischem Text und gesellschaftlich-historischem Kontext. Als maßgebliche Publikationsreihe einer seit den 1960er Jahren einflussreichen Sozialgeschichte der Literatur prägt STSL zugleich die literaturwissenschaftliche Diskussion über mögliche Austauschbeziehungen zwischen Literatur-, Geschichts- und Sozialwissenschaften.
The book traces pathways of communication by authors and publishers who fled from German speaking areas to the Netherlands after 1933, and examines their reception and continued impact in the periods ...before, during, and after WWII. Case examples of individual authors and publishers are brought together to create a historical fabric of biographies and reception histories that extends to our times.
After the National Socialist party came to power in Germany in 1933 and in Austria in 1938, many writers and intellectuals fled these countries. As a result, a dense network of correspondences was ...established among exiles from many different countries in and out of Europe. This article explores the expression of highly emotional experience in private letters, written at the time by professional literary writers and now available in print. Starting from existing linguistic, stylistic, and narrative studies of verbal emotional expression, a selection of representative epistolary texts is analyzed. The analyses show a wide and intricate repertoire of devices and strategies on all linguistic and textual levels, from graphemic markings to narrative composition, used to express and communicate emotional experience; these choices also bear on various communicative intentions, such as reestablishing contact, asking for help, or sharing concerns and opinions. Furthermore, the selected letters reveal that in the agonizing situation of exile, emotions consist of multiphase changes and processes, rather than of momentary reactions.
This article sketches the reception of Die größere Hoffnung in the Dutch language area from the first reviews in the early fifties up to the present day. The focus is on Frank Schuitemaker’s ...translation which appeared in 1981 together with an introduction to Aichinger’s life and work. A few examples show that the translator based his choices on a careful interpretation and thorough knowledge of Aichinger’s work. Nevertheless the reception remained modest, despite evidence of increased interest after the second edition appeared in 1987, the year in which Aichinger received the Europalia price.
This case study sets out to capture the processes of a foreign oeuvre entering and merging with a target literature and to chart the changing conditions of reception in the twentieth-century Dutch ...polysystem. A critical analysis of available reception and systems theories (those of, inter alia, Jan Mukařovský, Felix Vodička, Hans Robert Jauss, Pierre Bourdieu, and Itamar Even-Zohar) results in two main research questions that serve as a guideline for further investigation: How do reception processes reflect or relate to social segmentation, stratification, and change, and how do dynamic developments within literary production become manifest in the interplay of new (here, foreign) literature and an existing literary system? To provide a conceptual framework for an empirical approach to these questions, Even-Zohar's
concept is taken as a point of departure. But it is redefined as a "mental equipment" with three components: (1) knowledge of works and oeuvres that serve as models and
; (2) internalized strategies and conventions that govern production, reception, and communication; and (3) sets of values and interests that determine selection, classification, and judgment. The components are interconnected in that all are value-laden or interest-driven. Three independent sets of data concerning the reception of Virginia Woolf were collected to bring out different parts of these components and changes therein. Karl Erik Rosengren's mention technique is used to show how Woolf's work evolved as a frame of reference for literary critics and essayists. Woolf's translation and publishing history is analyzed in terms of changing
and shifting interests on these fronts. Reconstruction of
that underlie judgments in reviews of Woolf's work shows differences in evaluative patterns between her early and later receptions, due to shifts in both social structure and conceptions of literary value. The quantitative data (numbers of mentions and translations/editions) are compared with other modernist authors from the same "cohort" (Joyce, Mansfield, Musil, Kafka) to detect convergences and divergences. The results disclose a multifaceted complex of social and literary factors and forces in a changing polysystem: traces of confessional segregation before and secularization after the second World War, the advent of the second feminist wave in the 1960s, the changing book market and a changing attitude toward translation, and the growing impact of the modernist cohort on national literary criticism and production. Woolf's oeuvre appears to have figured in two increasingly separable repertoires, one shared by a circle of women writing for and about women, the other by a circle of mainstream writers and critics discussing and reviewing innovative literature. The division between national and international literature remains visible in both subsystems. Correlating the quantitative data of the modernist authors shows patterns that are similar to those found by Rosengren in Swedish culture and indicate historical "laws" in the increase and decrease of a cohort's presence in a repertoire.

der Autor und seine Werke seitdem in den Niederlanden
und Belgien lebten und noch leben. Hierbei stellt sich
heraus, dass es unmöglich ist, von Grenzenlosigkeit zu
träumen, ohne selbst immer wieder auf die Spannkraft
von Grenzen zurückzugreifen: Unmöglich, Kosmopolit zu
werden, ohne sich hin und wieder in den kleinen Räumen
des Lokalen zu verirren.
After Hitler came to power in Germany and the books of rejected writers were burned in 1933, many writers, publishers, and critics fled. The Netherlands became a center of exile literature because ...two of the biggest publishers were established in Amsterdam. How did this exile literature affect existing Dutch literary field? Did it achieve a lasting place in Dutch literary history? This paper examines how the reactions in the press reflected positions and changes in the established Dutch literary field. It also addresses the question why exile literature, even if it was closely connected with Dutch history, almost completely disappeared from sight. PUBLICATION ABSTRACT

Why did neither the Dutch Jewish nor the German Jewish ...exile literature published in the Netherlands become part of Dutch literary history? The article seeks answers to these questions by means of examining reviews, essays, and letters relating to Dutch Jewish and German Jewish exile literature within polysystem theory and the use of critical discourse theory.
Das Ziel dieser Untersuchung ist einerseits, das sich verändernde Literatursystem in den Niederlanden in der Auseinandersetzung mit der deutschsprachigen Exilliteratur in den 1930er Jahren zu ...erfassen und andererseits einen theoretischen und methodologischen Beitrag zur Rezeptionsforschung zu leisten. Den theoretischen Rahmen für das Unternehmen bildet die »Polysystemtheorie«. Analytisch wurde frei nach der »differenztheoretischen Textanalyse« vorgegangen. Roter Faden durch die Darstellung der Forschungsergebnisse ist die Rezeption von Joseph Roths Werk Der Antichrist (1934), das die damaligen Diskurse in den Niederlanden wie ein Prisma einfing und reflektierte.
The aim of this study is, on the one hand, to study the changing literary system in the Netherlands as it was reflected in the reception of German exile literature in the 1930s, and on the other hand to offer a theoretical and methodological contribution to reception studies. »Polysystems Theory« serves as the theoretical framework for the study, and the analytical approach was freely inspired by »Difference Theory analysis«. The study focuses on the reception of Joseph Roth's essayistic work Der Antichrist (1934) which, like a prism, captured and reflected the Dutch discourses of the period.
