MorphoSys is a reconfigurable SIMD architecture. In this paper, a BSP-based ray tracing is gracefully mapped onto MorphoSys. The mapping highly exploits ray-tracing parallelism. A straightforward ...mechanism is used to handle irregularity among parallel rays in BSP. To support this mechanism, a special data structure is established, in which no intermediate data has to be saved. Moreover, optimizations such as object reordering and merging are facilitated. Data starvation is avoided by overlapping data transfer with intensive computation so that applications with different complexity can be managed efficiently. Since MorphoSys is small in size and power efficient, we demonstrate that MorphoSys is an economic platform for 3D animation applications on portable devices.
ConieD is the biannual Congress on Computers in Education, organised by the Spanish Association for the Development of Computers in Education (ADIE). The last Congress, held in Puertollano (Ciudad ...Real), brought together researchers in different areas, ranging from web applications, educational environments, or Human-Computer Interaction to Artificial Intelligence in Education. The common leitmotiv of the major part of the lectures was the World Wide Web. In particular, the focus was on the real possibilities that this media presents in order to make the access of students to educational resources possible anywhere and anytime. This fact was highlighted in the Conclusions of the Congress following this Preface as the Introduction. From the full 92 papers presented to the Programme Committee we have selected the best 24 papers that we are presenting in this book. The selection of papers was a very difficult process, taking into account that the papers presented in the Congress (60) were all good enough to appear in this book. Only the restrictions of the extension of this book have limited the number of papers to 24. These papers represent the current high-quality contributions of Spanish research groups in Computers in Education. Manuel Ortega Cantero José Bravo Rodríguez Editors xiii Introduction ConieD’99 (1st National Congress on Computers in Education) has brought together a very important group of Spanish and Latin American researchers devoted to studying the application and use of computers in education.
Computer network managers are often requested to solve urgent network problems. Many times, they cannot access a computer to perform remote network management tasks. Aiming at solving this problem, ...this paper presents a novel tool for network management that uses a WAP interface, and focuses on the description of the architecture and the associated application modules. This paper also describes and analyses the several solutions employed to overcome the limitations imposed by the low screen resolution of mobile devices.

A novel method for improving the operation autonomy of the processing elements (PE) of SIMD-like machines is presented and discussed in this paper. The paper shows that it is feasible to avoid most ...branches and it is also possible to emulate nested if-then-else sentences on the processing elements by combining guarded instructions and pseudo branches. This prevents unnecessary intervention by the array control unit in many data-dependant computations, particularly those with short branch sections. The paper also shows that the simplicity of the method allows it to be implemented both in fine-grain and coarse-grain SIMD/ASIMD architectures because it does not require significant additional silicon area. Finally, it is shown that pseudo branches can be used to control the power saving of those processing elements that have instructions nullified.
Secretory IgA salivary concentration was studied, in order to investigate its influence as a possible causative role in groups of children affected by different respiratory diseases. Allergic ...bronchial asthma (n = 37), recurrent pneumonias (n = 11), recurrent upper airway infectious (n = 12) and a control group of healthy children (n = 25) were included. The sIgA mean concentration plus S.D. were: 26.0 +/- 11.5, 15.5 +/- 16.7, 21.2 +/- 15.6, 16.2 +/- 12.7 and 30.8 +/- 10.1, respectively. A statistically significant association between decreased or absent levels of sIgA and disease was found, but no correlation between alterations in sIgA concentrations and any class of serum immunoglobulin levels, or with any other analyzed variables could be established. Among the group of diseases studied, a statistically significant difference (p less than 0.01) was found between infectious asthma and controls, recurrent upper airway infections and controls, and between allergic and infectious asthma. These findings support the conclusion that a decrease or absence of sIgA is an important factor to be considered in infectious asthma, as well as in recurrent upper airway infectious diseases affecting children.
