In Indonesia, issues in the metropolitan transportation sector are considered severe. For instance, peripheral districts in the Jakarta metropolitan area (JMA), such as Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and ...Bekasi, contribute to the high mobility rate within the metropolitan area. This article examines the extent of motorcycle-based ride-hailing for commuting in the JMA and Bandung metropolitan areas (BMA). In particular, this study explores ride-hailing users’ characteristics—social, economic and spatial—and their proportion to the total commuter mobility in a metropolitan area. The study employed descriptive statistical models using commuter data in the JMA and BMA, respectively. Our results indicate that young and lower-income commuters are the dominant users of ride-hailing services. As motorcycle taxi services are relatively cheaper and accessible, young and lower-income commuters, including informal workers, prefer ride-hailing services. The study also suggests the impact of the intensification of inter-peri-urban mobilities of post-suburbanisation on the increasing demand for ride-hailing. In this sense, the study proposes that the long-overdue strengthening of metropolitan-scale governance is urgently required. It is also crucial for metropolitan governments to issue appropriate inter-district public transportation policies and engage in development.
•Long-distance and -hour ride-hailing intensifies traffic congestion.•Ride-sourcing as an alternative transportation mode for public transport.•need for government policies to ensure safety and affordability for commuters.•Importance of public transportation accessibility and convenience.•Strengthening of metropolitan-scale governance.
Social capital (i.e. bonding and bridging) affects food security. In Indonesia, studies have been conducted at the site level, covering households in specific provinces, districts, subdistricts, or ...even villages. Accordingly, this study contributes to the existing literature by employing a sample of 68,304 households across Indonesia using data from Statistics Indonesia's (BPS's) 2018 National Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS). Based on Lewbel's (2012. "Using Heteroscedasticity to Identify and Estimate Mismeasured and Endogenous Regressor Models." Journal of Business and Economic Statistics 30 (1): 67-80) two-stage least squares (2SLS) regression test, the results suggest that bonding and bridging social capital positively affect food security. Specifically, bridging social capital has a more substantial influence on food security.
The increasing demand for land development due to human activities has fueled urbanization. However, uncontrolled urban development in some regions has resulted in urban environmental problems ...arising from an imbalance between supply and demand. This study aims to develop an integrated model for evaluating and prioritizing the management of hazardous urban sprawl in the Bandung metropolitan region of Indonesia. The novelty of this study lies in its pioneering application of long-term remote sensing data-based and machine learning techniques to formulate an urban sprawl priority index. This index is unique in its consideration of the impacts stemming from human economic activity, environmental degradation, and multi-disaster levels as integral components. The analysis of hazardous urban sprawl across three distinct time periods (1985–1993, 1993–2008, and 2008–2018) revealed that the 1993–2008 period had the highest increase in human economic activity, reaching 172,776 ha. The 1985–1993 period experienced the highest level of environmental degradation in the study area. Meanwhile, the 1993–2008 period showed the highest concentration of multi-hazard locations. The combined model of hazardous urban sprawl, incorporating the three parameters, indicated that the highest priority for intervention was on the outskirts of urban areas, specifically in West Bandung Regency, Cimahi, Bandung Regency, and East Bandung Regency. Regions with high-priority indices require greater attention from the government to mitigate the negative impacts of hazardous urban sprawl. This model, driven by the urban sprawl priority index, is envisioned to regulate urban movement in a more sustainable manner. Through the efficient monitoring of urban environments, the study seeks to guarantee the preservation of valuable natural resources while promoting sustainable urban development practices.
Despite having a long and rich culture, the preservation of cultural heritage in Indonesian cities is still facing numerous challenges. Modernization has gradually replaced countless historical ...monuments, and museums displaying the glory of previous civilizations are not as popular as other urban attractions. Different approaches should be considered to prevent further cultural loss and the fragmentation of Indonesian urban history. In this study, we attempt to learn from Taiwanese practices of preserving cultural heritage. In recent years, Indonesia and Taiwan have been developing intense economic and cultural ties through several cultural promotion projects. While the study identified the same challenges for Taiwan to protect built heritage from rapid urbanization, there are some good model practices in place that can be adopted by Indonesian society. First is the digitalization of cultural heritage that contributed to data preservation and availability to the public. Secondly, is the importance of defining those cultural practices/artifacts that reflect a nation’s identity. Thirdly, attention to the design and enforcement of the heritage preservation act. The last point concerns creativity and initiatives to collaborate with the creatives and other potential collaborators.
This study focuses on Aomori, a prefecture situated in the northern part of the Japanese main island Honshu. Riding on the popularity of time-slip-themed entertainment, Aomori began to brand itself ...as a place where people can experience a time-travel journey to the Jomon, the Japanese prehistoric era. Through this study, we investigated the practice of Aomori to incorporate fantasy in its heritage tourism. Mixed-method research was used to retrieve and analyze information about Aomori and its Jomon-themed time-slip tourism, including desk research and word frequency analysis. While selling fantasy in tourism is a not-so-new topic, the Aomori case shed light on the alternative strategy that regional areas can consider. The prefecture showed us the prospect to combine fantasy and the local culture to attract younger tourists and dedicated pop-culture fans to visit the local attractions. It also demonstrated the potential of thematic fantasy in heritage tourism, especially archaeotourism, often perceived as boring by the younger generation. Additionally, the Aomori case indicated the importance of tourism infrastructure, creative marketing, and innovation in heritage tourism. It further signifies the importance of speeding up digital transformation for the future of heritage tourism.
The creation of ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) in 1992 and decentralization in 1999 mark the state restructuring in Indonesia. This book analyses the impact of state restructuring on regional economic ...development in Indonesia between 1993 and 2010. Regional economic analysis shows persistent and severe regional disparities throughout the period. Particularly, econometrics study found that decentralization has accelerated regional disparities whilst the AFTA effect is insignificant on regional economic growth.
Furthermore, historical institutionalism analysis on two cities - the manufacturing industry in Batam and the creative economy in Bandung - shows that past and embedded local institutions provide the capacity to adapt and create new development paths. The book suggests the importance of local-specific policies that embrace local knowledge and institutions to develop regional specialization and competitive advantage. This book fills the gap in Indonesian literature that lacks studies on the integrated impact of decentralization and trade liberalization, both economically and politically.
In the accommodation sector, the sharing economy has caused a change of lifestyle that has led to gentrification. This paper chose Bandung City as a case study as the city is one of Indonesia's ...creative centres and tourism destinations. This study identifies the increasing number of Airbnb listings and how it relates to gentrification. Two sources of data are used: Airbnb and the economic and demographic data in Bandung City. We construct the gentrification index and present the non-parametric tests on the impact of Airbnb on gentrification. The analysis demonstrates the gentrification process in the fringe area near tourist attractions and residential areas, which differs from cities in developed countries. Our findings suggest that Airbnb listings may lead to tourism gentrification in peripheral and residential areas. This study proposes the importance of identification and policies on gentrification development to hinder over-tourism in peripheral and second-tier cities in developing countries.
•Gentrification is found in the fringe area near to suburban tourism attractions and residential areas.•Growing number of Airbnb listings suggesting the economic pull factor of tourism gentrificationGrowing number of Airbnb listings suggesting the economic pull factor of tourism gentrification.•Government should regulate sharing economy and tourism that affects land use and residential areas.
This paper investigates the temporal dynamic of Korean Wave (also known as Hallyu) as an online entertainment consumption and emotions experienced in the first five-month period during the pandemic. ...The COVID-19 pandemic has caused cities across the globe to regulate restrictions of social distancing and mobility. Previous studies suggest that city lockdowns may lead to public health problems due to restriction on human interaction. This study aims to examine the changing pattern of online entertainment consumption and how it was impacted by consumers during the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper uses Google's trend data to examine the dynamics of search terms and Natural language processing (NLP) model using twitter's text data to analyse cultural consumption and emotional analysis. The study reveals an increasing trend in search terms related to the Korean Wave during the lockdown. Simultaneously, the text analysis of tweets showed that positive experiences occurred three-fold compared to negative experiences, suggesting happiness and joy were received with the cultural consumption. The study highlights the possibility of employing user-generated data, such as that of Google and Twitter, as an alternative source to understand the behaviour and wellbeing of the urban population for both urban and media studies.
Online shopping has eliminated the need to visit physical commercial centres. As a result, trips to these centres have shifted from primarily shopping-motives to leisure, companionship, and dining. ...The shifting in consumer behaviour is implicated in the growing spatial agglomeration of restaurants/cafes within commercial centres in European cities. Conversely, in southern cities, various casual restaurants/cafes also serve as leisure and companionship hubs. However, their spatial patterns are less explained. This article aims to elucidate the spatial pattern of these diverse restaurants/cafes in a typical southern city, Surabaya City. In this study, we employ the term ‘food services’ to encompass the various types of restaurants/cafes found in southern cities. We gather Points of Interest (POIs) data about food services via web scraping on Google Maps, then map out their spatial distribution across 116 spatial units of Surabaya City. Utilising k-means cluster analysis, we classify these 116 spatial units into six distinct clusters based on the composition of food service variants. Our findings show that City Centres and Sub-City Centres are locations for different types of restaurants/cafes. The City Centre is typically a location for fine dining restaurants and cafes, whereas Sub-City Centres are locations for fast casual dining and fast food restaurants. Cafes and fast food restaurants are centralised throughout downtown areas. Casual food service restaurants, such as casual style dining, coffee shops, and food stalls, are dispersed along business, residential zones, and periphery areas without intense domination of any specific variant.

Access to homeownership is becoming increasingly limited due to various factors related to a decline in social capital, including sense of stability, security, and community attachment. This study ...examined the relationship between homeownership and social capital in Indonesia at the household level while addressing endogeneity and heterogeneity issues. This research used panel data from the IFLS-4 and IFLS-5 surveys, employing a fixed-effect regression model with robust standard error and instrumental variables. The study found that homeownership significantly impacts social capital in Indonesia. Furthermore, the effect of homeownership differs between Java and non-Java households and between urban and rural households. The study also identified other significant influencing factors of social capital, such as household size and monthly income. It is concluded that policies aimed at increasing homeownership may positively impact social capital in Indonesia. This research has provided evidence of the heterogeneity of the effect of homeownership on social capital based on geographical location and household characteristics, suggesting that policymakers should develop policies to meet the specific needs of each group to maximize the positive impact of homeownership on social capital.
