Different fiber blends, knit patterns, and treatments may be applied to increase the functionality and comfort of knitted fabrics. In this research, the physical properties and bending stiffness of 1 ...× 1 rib and half-milano rib fabrics with four fiber blends (90% cotton/10% antistatic PET, 80% cotton/20% antistatic PET, 70% cotton/30% antistatic PET, and 65% cotton/35% antistatic PET) applied to each knit pattern were studied. The effect of fabric direction (course and wale), technical side (face side and back side), and treatment (dying, softening with Aquasoft® SI hydrophilic softener, and Polygiene VO-600 antibacterial finish) on the physical characteristics and bending stiffness of the fabrics was evaluated. The results revealed that dyeing and softening increased the fabric area density and both wale and course densities and decreased fabric thicknesses compared to the control fabrics. The antibacterial finish applied to the softened samples did not change the physical properties. Bending stiffness in the course direction was lower than in the wale direction, and it was higher for technical face samples than for technical back ones. The 1 × 1 rib knitted fabrics showed lower stiffness than the half-milano rib fabrics. Treatment of the investigated fabrics decreased bending stiffness for both treatment sample groups compared to the control group.
The electrical properties and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of raw, dyed and softened, and treated with an antibacterial finish polygiene VO-600 cotton/antistatic polyester fabrics of two ...knit patterns, such as 1 × 1 rib and half-Milano rib, giving a very similar appearance for the fabric surface and having four polyester percentages (10%, 20%, 30%, and 35%) were investigated. Surface and the volume resistivity were measured according to EN 1149, and the effectiveness of electromagnetic shielding was determined according to ASTM D4935-18. The effect of individual factors (fiber composition, knit pattern, technical side, and treatment) and their complexity on the electrical properties of fabrics was evaluated by applying analysis of variance. The research revealed that the fiber composition of fabrics as an individual factor has the greatest influence on electrical properties. Electrical resistance decreased with the increasing percentage of polyester. Half-Milano rib fabrics were significantly more resistant than 1 × 1 rib fabrics. Raw fabrics were less electrically resistant than dyed and softened fabrics, and treated with antibacterial finish fabrics. Antibacterial finished fabrics were more electrically resistant than dyed and softened fabrics. The analysis of variance revealed that the complexity of investigated factors, such as fiber composition, knit pattern, and treatment, has a significant impact on fabric resistivity for both technical sides. Therefore, when selecting knitted fabrics with a very similar appearance for final applications in daily clothing, not only the impact of individual factors on their performance must be evaluated. The shielding effectiveness of the fabrics was too low to protect against electromagnetic waves.
The complex evaluation of thermo-physiological comfort for a particular garment is still challenging, as it depends on the different structural parameters and individual properties of textiles. ...Measurement of relevant fabric characteristics requires very specific laboratory equipment, such as an M 290 moisture management tester (SDL ATLAS) or similar. For this reason, it is obvious that there is a great demand to predict the overall moisture management capability (OMMC) based on the individual properties that are responsible for clothing comfort and testing according to different standards rather than OMMC-specific calculation using the M 290 tester. Therefore, in this research, linear regression analysis was performed using MATLAB software to predict the OMMC for cotton–polyester fabrics knitted in two patterns, namely 1 × 1 rib and half-Milano rib, using four percentages of fibers. Water vapor permeability, water vapor resistance, water absorption capacity, water absorption time, and air permeability were used as input variables for linear regression analysis to predict the OMMC of fabrics. The performed analysis has shown that the OMMC is directly dependent on the relative water vapor permeability and air permeability, and the linear regression equation suggested in this research can predict the suitability of a textile for a particular garment concerning its moisture management behavior.
Sensorial evaluation plays an important role in the identification of materials in addition to technical specifications for the wearer. The current study focuses on the development of different ...hybrid knitted structures with different percentages of knit stitches and tuck. Hundred percent cotton was used to develop unique structures on the 4-cam track single jersey knitting machine. A total of 15 hybrid weft knitted structures are developed with different combinations of knit and tuck stitch percentages. The effects of different amount of knit and tuck stitches on physical parameters, e.g. area density, stitch density, and thickness, were characterized. Sensorial comfort, e.g. resilience, softness, smoothness, drape, and wrinkle recovery rate, were evaluated with the standard test method. After testing and data analysis, it was concluded that percentages of stitch types have a significant effect on the physical parameters and sensorial comfort properties of the fabrics.
Abstract
The influence of fabric treatments, fabric structure and yarn composition on the strength, elasticity and bending stiffness behavior of developed antistatic knitted fabrics was investigated ...for daily wear clothing. 1×1 rib knit fabrics showed higher elongation and strength than half-Milano rib knit fabrics, with high elongation in the wale direction of the fabrics. An increase in antistatic polyester content causes an increase in the tensile strength of the fabrics. Fabric treatments were found to be highly influential with respect to the properties of the knitted fabrics developed. Dyed and softened fabrics showed lower stiffness, while the antibacterial finished group showed increased bending stiffness.
This research fills in the missing knowledge on the moisture management and air permeability of knitted fabrics developed using mixed cotton/antistatic polyester yarns with both antibacterial and ...antistatic behavior to enhance their functionality. The effect of the knit pattern, technical side, percentage of fiber mixture and treatment on water absorption capacity and time, relative water vapor permeability and resistance, and air permeability of developed fabrics was investigated. The 1x1 rib knit and half-Milano rib knit patterns were applied in each 4 percentages of cotton and antistatic polyester and 3 types of finishing to prepare 24 fabrics. The water absorption capacity for 1x1 rib knit fabrics was in the range of 182–231% and 162–237% for the half-Milano knitted fabric with the ∼20% increase when increasing the percentage of antistatic polyester or applying the treatment. The water absorption time depended on the pattern, the fabric treatment, and the percentage of the fiber mixture. The applied antibacterial treatment significantly prolonged the water absorption time of most of the dyed and softened samples. The 1x1 rib knitted fabrics showed significantly higher water vapor and air permeability than the half-Milano rib knitted fabrics. The relative water vapor and air permeability of the treated samples increased significantly with an increasing percentage of polyester. Research results are of great practical value when designing new textiles and simulating mathematically their comfort behavior when choosing them for a particular garment.
Compression sportswear is specialized clothing chiefly designed for the athletes muscle fatigue reduction. Compression stockings are widely used in sportswear to support muscles and control excessive ...body vibrations. Compression/interface pressure between the wearer and stocking's surface is considerable in compression sportswear efficacy. However, thermo-physiological comfort is also influential while preparing summer sportswear. The research investigates the effect of fibers type and the inlay yarns number of covering filaments on compression, air permeability, water vapor permeability, and thermal resistance of sportswear compression stockings. Three different fibers, sorbtek (channelized polyester), nylon 6, and micro Nylon (polyamide-6), have been used as main yarns. Also, three distinct levels of covering yarn number of filaments have been utilized. Data have been statistically analyzed using full factorial design of experiment and regression analysis to predict fiber type and the number of covering yarn filaments for achieving desired comfort properties without compromising compression characteristics.
The need for innovative fabrics has rapidly increased in recent years, owing to their cost effective with good aesthetic and comfort properties. Seersucker fabrics are cost effective fabric structure ...with good aesthetic and comfort properties produced by modification in material or in fabric structures. The main purpose of this research work is to develop seersucker fabric on interlock machine through using different yarns and stripes height. Puckering effect on knitted fabric obtained using elastane covered yarn with simple cotton yarn and relaxation of elastane made the cotton yarn produce a puckering effect. Different seersucker fabrics were produced by changing tube size with the help of change in stripe height and using different yarn combinations on the back side (i.e. cotton covered elastane, spun polyester, and cotton) of the fabric. The seersucker knitted fabric were subjected to different tests such as mechanical testing that is fabric stretch, tactile comfort and thermophysiological comfort, that is, thermal resistance and air permeability test. The test results concluded that the seersucker interlock knitted fabric gives good comfort and aesthetic properties.
In this research, the influence of the antistatic polyester fibers containing carbon black on the comfort properties of 100% and blended cotton as well as on 100% and blended polyester single jersey ...knitted fabrics was evaluated. The research results revealed that the behavior of the investigated knitted fabrics was dependent on their structure and mechanical characteristics. The electrical resistance of knitted fabrics decreased significantly due to the use of 4% antistatic polyester fibers. The electrical resistance of the pure and blended cotton knitted fabric was lower than that of the pure and blended polyester knitted fabrics. Antistatic polyester fibers positively influenced the air permeability of the polyester knitted fabric. The air permeability of 100% and blended cotton fabrics was approximately 3.5 times compared to both 100% and blended polyester fabrics, respectively. The carbon black polyester fibers influenced the decrease in thermal resistance, the increase in vapor permeability, and the minor increase in vapor resistance of both cotton and polyester knitted fabrics. Thermal resistance was lower, water vapor resistance was significantly higher, and relative water vapor permeability was slightly lower for the cotton and cotton/antistatic polyester knitted fabrics than for the polyester and polyester / antistatic polyester knitted fabrics, respectively. Therefore, the research results revealed that the presence of 4% antistatic polyester fibers in cotton and polyester knitted fabrics positively influenced their antistatic behavior and improved or almost did not alter their comfort properties.
Socks, which are a necessary item of clothing, need to be comfortable, affordable, and retain their quality throughout their life. Dimensional stability is one of the basic requirements of socks. The ...purpose of this study is to investigate the contributing factors, that is, elastane percentage, main yarn material, and process type on dimensional stability of socks. Four different percentages of elastane in plaiting yarn (4%, 6%, 8%, and 10%), two main yarns materials (100% cotton and polyester/cotton 52/48), and two process types (wash and bleach) were taken as level of input variables to study the effect on dimensional stability of socks using full-factorial experimental design method. Statistical tool (analysis of variance) was used to check the significant effect of different factors. It was found that with the increase in elastane percentage, shrinkage was decreased. Cotton was found to have more shrinkage percentage as compared to polyester/cotton. In addition, it was observed that washing treatment produced significantly lesser shrinkage than bleaching. These data present a great interest to sock manufacturers who can make better choices to manufacture, dimensionally stable socks.
