A high morphological specialization is noted for vipers from the isolated populations of the Otlubekli Daglari Ridge, Zekeriya Village, Ardahan pass, Mt. Ilgar-Dag (Turkey), Javakheti Plateau ...(Armenia, Georgia). New forms of shield-head vipers are described from the Turkish Lesser Caucasus and east Turkey: Pelias sakoi sp. nov. (Otlubekli Daglari Ridge), Pelias darevskii uzumorum ssp. nov. (Southern limestone part of the Yalnizcam Daglari Ridge), Pelias darevskii kumlutasi ssp. nov. (Northern volcanic part of the Yalnizcam Daglari Ridge). Keys to identification of species and subspecies of the Pelias darevskii-olguni complex are given, and ecological differences of its representatives are discussed. The cluster and discriminant analyses on morphological features allow us to consider these vipers as separate taxa, whereas the molecular analysis on cytb does not give significant differences for most populations. This result should not be perceived unambiguously in favor of conspecificity of the considered populations. In addition to the morphological differences of the vipers, we consider such ecological differences as biotope preference, age and size of the puberty, the history of landscapes and habitats, mezoclimatic habitat characteristics, etc. Given the southern location of the Otlubekli Daglari Ridge and no signs of glaciation there, the vipers from the vicinity of Erzincan should be regarded as an ancient relic isolated form. The climate of this area has contributed to the conservation of ancient Eastern Mediterranean relics both among plants and animals.

Steam reforming of
n-butane over Ni/δ-Al
2O
3 and Pt-Ni/δ-Al
2O
3 catalysts was studied at temperatures between 578 and 678
K. The major difference between the two catalysts was found to be at 648
K, ...at which Pt-Ni/δ-Al
2O
3 showed superior performance in terms of selective hydrogen production that resulted in lower carbon dioxide and methane formation. Carbon monoxide was not observed over either catalyst at 648
K, but was produced in small quantities at 678
K. No coke formation was detected under the reaction conditions used. Both catalysts exhibited activities increasing with temperature. At 678
K, complete
n-butane conversion was achieved over bimetallic Pt-Ni, while 67% conversion was obtained over Ni. Studies for evaluating reaction kinetics over the Pt-Ni/δ-Al
2O
3 catalyst conducted under differential conditions at 648
K gave reaction orders of 1.20 and −0.18 with respect to
n-butane and steam, respectively. Activation energy of the reaction was found to be 80.7±7.7
kJ/mol in the 603–668
K range.
Chopped strand glass fiber reinforced particle-filled polymer composite beams with varying notch-to-depth ratios and different volume fractions of glass fibers were investigated in Mode I fracture ...using three-point bending tests. Effects of polyester resin content and glass fiber content on fracture behavior was also studied. Polyester resin contents were used 13.00%%, 14.75%, 16.50%, 18.00% and 19.50%, and glass fiber contents were 1% and 1.5% of the total weight of the polymer composite system. Flexural strength of the polymer composite increases with increase in polyester and fiber content. The critical stress intensity factor was determined by using several methods such as initial notch depth method, compliance method and
J-integral method. The values of
K
IC
obtained from these methods were compared.
The objective of this study was to investigate serum adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity as a marker of T lymphocyte activation and parameters of oxidative stress and antioxidant defence in ...hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). Serum ADA activity, malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GP
x
) levels were investigated in 40 pregnant women with the HG and 40 with healthy pregnancies, in a descriptive study. Although serum ADA and CAT were measured to be higher in HG group, the difference was not significant. Serum MDA and GP
x
levels were significantly elevated in women with HG when compared with those without HG. The significance of changes in lipid peroxidation and T-cell activation in the pathogenesis of HG and whether this is a cause or a compensatory reaction to HG requires further investigations with larger multicentre trials.
The effective thermal conductivity (ETC) of multilayer thermal insulation materials was experimentally investigated as a function of temperature (0–25 °C). The materials consisted of binary/ternary ...glass wools or ternary expanded polystyrene foams reinforced with aluminium foil. The experimental measurements were performed using a guarded hot plate with temperature differences of 5, 10 and 15 °C. The results indicated that significant correlations exist between ETC and the characteristics of the materials with decreasing temperature. The ETC decreases with reinforcement with aluminium foil at the same temperature or with temperature differences of 5 and 15 °C. In addition, it was clearly observed that the ETC decreases sharply with decreased temperature. Consequently, reflective materials may reduce the ETC at low temperatures.

An autothermal, dual catalyst, fixed-bed reaction system proposed for hydrogen production from methane is mathematically investigated using different catalyst bed configurations and feed ratios. ...Consecutive placement or physical mixture of the oxidation and reforming catalysts, Pt/
δ–Al
2O
3 and Ni/MgO–Al
2O
3, respectively, are the two configurations of interest. Reactor operation at different feed ratios is analyzed for both catalyst bed configurations on laboratory scale and industrial scale via a series of simulations by using one-dimensional heterogeneous fixed-bed reactor model. The type of heterogeneous components implemented into the model is decided by checking related criteria. Hydrogen production is predicted to be higher when the catalysts are in a physically mixed state as well as at low methane-to-oxygen and high steam-to-methane ratios, which are in agreement with the experimental results reported for a bench scale integral reactor. The optimum operating conditions for obtaining maximum hydrogen production are also investigated.
