...L’ouvrage pluridisciplinaire Nomad lives from prehistoric Times to the Present Day (Averbouh et al. 2021) en est une illustration.

Antler is one of the primary animal raw materials exploited for technical purposes by the hunter-gatherer groups of the Eurasian Upper Palaeolithic (UP) all over the ecological range of deers, and ...beyond. It was exhaustively employed to produce one of the most critical tools for the survival of the UP societies: hunting weapons. However, antler implements can be made from diverse deer taxa, with different ecological requirements and ethological behaviours. Identifying the antler's origin at a taxonomic level is thus essential in improving our knowledge of humans' functional, practical and symbolic choices, as well as the human-animal interface during Prehistoric times. Nevertheless, palaeogenetics analyses have focused mainly on bone and teeth, with genetic studies of antler generally focused on modern deer conservation. Here we present the results of the first whole mitochondrial genome ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis by means of in-solution hybridisation capture of antlers from pre-Holocene archaeological contexts. We analysed a set of 50 Palaeolithic and Neolithic (c. 34-8ka) antler and osseous objects from South-Western Europe, Central Europe, South-Western Asia and the Caucasus. We successfully obtained aDNA, allowing us to identify the exploited taxa and demonstrate the archaeological relevance of those finds. Moreover, as most of the antlers were sampled using a minimally-invasive method, further analyses (morphometric, technical, genetic, radiometric and more) remain possible on these objects.
One of the objectives of the CNRS European Research Group GDRE PREHISTOS is to look for cases of “debitage by extraction” on the European continent from the Paleolithic to the First Iron Age. We will ...thus be able to fill the gaps in our knowledge by first describing each case in technical and economic terms and by identifying new variants of this method. The rod production by extraction is a major invention in the working of osseous materials and it is conceptually similar to the laminar debitage procedure in stone working in that it allows blanks of a similar shape, artificial and standardized, to be produced. The “baguette”, whose shape is close to that of blades, is the best known of these types of blanks. This capacity to produce series of blanks with a sometimes exactly similar morphology and then finished objects led to the standardized mass productions that characterize the evolution of some categories of objects, such as projectile points. This debitage by extraction appears globally during the first half of the Upper Paleolithic (being present in the Early Gravettian of Western Europe). The aim of this paper is to give an overview of different cases identified in the last years for the Upper Paleolithic to the Mesolithic, especially in Europe.
Antler has been one of the main raw material exploited by high latitude people such as that of prehistoric Europe when reindeer (Rangifer tarandus Linn. 1758) was a common species of Pleistocene ...Fauna. Following the retreat of glaciers during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition, reindeer moved to the North to become today the northernmost ruminant in the world. The transformation of antler has one only goal: making objects. The structure and form of antler and of the different parts within the rack, and its physical and chemical or mechanical properties have a direct influence on the way objects are conceived, made and shaped so that they are best adapted to their function. Nonetheless, all these characteristics vary according to individuals, environmental conditions, anatomical position of the part used and development stage of the antler. As part of the technological analysis of archaeological or modern reindeer antler assemblages, one has to understand these characteristics to best identify where the piece of antler came from in the rack. This in time allows addressing questions such the economy of antler exploitation and/or time (season) of collect. Characterizing the morphology of antler and its mechanical constants and variants has been the main goal of building a reindeer antler reference collection.
