“Confucian script” 儒字 (chữ Nho) has become a unique name used to refer to the “Chinese script” 漢字 (chữ Hán) in Vietnamese. The integration between Chinese script and Confucianism had progressed ...through monarchical centuries, motivated by Vietnam’s political tradition. Supported by rulers of the country, Chinese script overwhelmed the difference of languages, became the official writing system, and therefore held great influence on important activities of government such as administration, diplomacy, education, and employment. By looking carefully at how Vietnamese monarchs managed to manipulate the Chinese script, Nôm script, and Confucianism to serve their political purposes, we stress that it was Confucianism that served as the link tying the Chinese script with Vietnamese rulers. This link was so strong that the Chinese script remained the dominant form of writing even with the invention of the “Nôm script” 喃字 (chữ Nôm), which was a vernacular system developed to write the Vietnamese language. Furthermore, because Confucianism itself was the spiritual core of the Chinese monarchical structure, Vietnamese rulers learned from the Chinese model by way of the Chinese script when building their own independent state. Confucianism was viewed as the core of Chinese culture.

Shrimp production and exports are important to rural economic development of Vietnam. The growth in production and exports has accelerated in the past decade, but so too have been the losses from natural disasters and diseases. To protect famers from disease losses, the government established a subsidized pilot insurance program with the expectation of free market liberalization at the end of the three-year trial. The pilot program failed because of inadequate pre-program information on farmers risk management strategies and their willingness to pay an insurance premium. In this paper, we examine farmers risk management strategies and their willingness to pay an insurance premium. With a survey of 315 famers in Ben Tre and Tra Vinh provinces, we found that almost all farmers were willing to pay an insurance premium of $0.15 per kg of shrimp, but for the period from stocking to 40 days. Farmers who participated in a training program, low-income farmers and those with high total and chemical costs were willing to pay a high insurance premium. The risk management variables show that if the farmers invested in sanitation measures, provided a place for sludge deposit and supplied dead shrimp to the laboratory the higher the premium they would be willing to pay. On the other hand, the farmers who are familiar with insurance program companies were less willing to pay a high premium. This information is important to policy makers in decision-making on insurance provision.
Research results on the effects of aquaculture on poverty alleviation have been mixed. We use Tobit, simulation models and cross sectional survey data of 285 households, in Ben Tre Province, Vietnam, ...to evaluate the effects of aquaculture involvement on poverty, measured using per capita consumption of less than $1.25 USD, $1.50, and $2.00 per day. The results show for per capita consumption of less than $1.25 per day that households’ aquaculture participation or productivity had no or little effect on the living standard. For income levels above $1.25 per capita per day aquaculture participation or productivity influenced the standard of living.
In this work, PrFeO3 nanoparticles were synthesized by modified
co-precipitation method and annealed at different temperatures up to 850?C.
The annealed PrFeO3 nanoparticles have single phase ...orthorhombic structure
and the average particle size of 25-30 nm. Due to the very small particle
size the prepared PrFeO3 nanoparticles are capable of being used as
photocatalyst materials thanks to their strong adsorption bands at 230-400
nm and 400-800 nm observed from the UV-Vis spectra. Additionally, the PrFeO3
nanoparticles are paramagnetic materials with Hc ~ 10Oe and Mr ~ 0. These
findings demonstrate their potential use not only as photocatalysts, but
also as magnetic materials.
The introduction of the African swine fever (ASF) into previously unaffected countries often overwhelms veterinary authorities with the resource demanding control efforts that need to be undertaken. ...The approach of implementing total stamping out of affected herds is taken as “default” control measure in many countries, regardless of the transboundary animal disease addressed, leading to a variety of challenges when implemented. Apart from the organizational challenges and high demand for human and financial resources, the total stamping out approach puts a high burden on the livelihoods of the affected farmers. After the spread of ASF throughout the country in 2019, Vietnam changed the culling approach enabling partial culling of only affected animals in the herd, in order to save resources, and reduce the environmental impact because of the carcass disposal and allow farmers to protect valuable assets. Until now, field data comparing these disease control options in their performance during implementation has not been evaluated scientifically. Analyzing the effect of the change in a control policy, the present study concludes that partial culling can on average save over 50% of total stock with an 8-day prolongation of the implementation of control measures. With 58% of farms undergoing partial culling scoring high on a time-livelihoods matrix, while total stamping out fails to score on livelihoods, much-needed clarity on the livelihood-protecting effects of alternative culling strategies is given. In the future, this will allow veterinary authorities to adjust control measures according to differing priorities, targeting peculiarities of ASF and acknowledging resource constraints faced.
Two types of halloysite collected from the upper (UPS) and lower (LOS) zones of a weathered pegmatite profile in the Thach Khoan area, Phu Tho were defined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning ...electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermal analysis (TG and DTG), and N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms. XRD analysis showed that halloysite and kaolinite coexist in samples of size fractions <2 µm. Semi-quantitative analysis by XRD after formamide (FA) treatment indicated that the halloysite contents are approximately 81% and 93% in UPS and LOS samples, respectively. The results of SEM and TEM analyses showed that while short halloysite type is mainly distributed in the upper zone, long halloysite type occurs primarily in the lower zone of the weathered pegmatite profile. The length of short halloysite ranging from 250 to 750 nm is most popular, accounting for 47.2% of halloysites in the UPS sample. Meanwhile, long halloysites which have the length of 750–1250 nm are dominant in the LOS sample with 69.9%. In addition, short halloysites with outer diameter of >100 nm constitute 79.1% of halloysites in the UPS sample while long halloysites with outer diameter of 50–100 nm make up 74.2% of halloysites in LOS sample. Specific surface areas are 15.7434 and 22.0211 m2/g and average pore sizes are 18.9837 and 17.0281 nm for the UPS and LOS samples, respectively. The analysis implies that although forming under same natural geographical and climatic conditions, halloysites at different depths in the weathered pegmatite profile may have different morphological and other properties.
In this study, core–shell rubber (CSR) nanoparticles with approximate particle size of 35 nm were used as a modifier for the epoxy polymer. The effects of various CSR contents in the epoxy matrix on ...mode I interlaminar fracture toughness, tensile strength, and fatigue life of the carbon fabric reinforced epoxy (CF/EP) composites were investigated. The experimental results showed that the mode I interlaminar fracture toughness at crack initiation and propagation significantly improved by 71.21 and 58.47 %, respectively, when 8.0 wt% CSR was dispersed in the epoxy matrix. The fatigue life of the modified CF/EP composites at all of CSR contents dramatically increased 75–100 times longer than that of the unmodified CF/EP composites at high cycle fatigue while tensile strength slightly increased by about 10 %. Field emission scanning electron microcopy (FESEM) observations of the fracture surfaces were conducted to explain failure mechanisms of CSR addition to the CF/EP composites. The evidences of the rubber nanoparticle debonding, plastic void growth, and microshear banding were credited for delaying the onset of matrix crack, and reducing the crack growth rate, as a result, attributed to increase in the mechanical properties of the CF/EP composites.

By fetal ...echocardioraphy at 20 weeks' gestation, we diagnosed a rare case of atrioventricular discordance and ventriculoarterial concordance associated with a ventricular septal defect. This is the first case reported from Vietnam prenatally. We present our management of this pregnancy and the baby's neonatal course. This rare anomaly remains a challenge for the baby's early neonatal course before initial neonatal discharge.
A combined multidisciplinary and individualized approach for the optimal management of this complicated pregnancy and further neonatal surgical treatment plans for the baby are recommended.

Vietnam has a high thalassemia burden. We collected blood samples from 5880 pregnant Vietnamese women during prenatal health checks to assess thalassemia carrier frequency using combined ...gap-polymerase chain reaction (gap-PCR) and targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS). Thalassemia carriers were identified with prevalence of 13.13% (772), including 7.82% (460) carriers of α-thalassemia (α-thal), 5.31% (312) carriers of β-thalassemia (β-thal), and 0.63% (37) concurrent α-/β-thal carriers. Hb Westmead (HBA2: c.369C>G) (n = 53) and Hb Constant Spring (Hb CS or HBA2: c.427T>C) (in 28) are the two most common nondeletional α-globin variants, accounting for 11.5 and 6.0% of α-thal carriers. We detected 11 different β-thal genotypes. Hb E (HBB: c.79G>A) (in 211) accounted for 67.6% of β-thal carriers. The most common β-thal genotypes were associated with mutations at codon 17 (A>T) (HBB: c.52A>T), codons 41/42 (-TTCT) (HBB: c.126_129delCTTT), and codon 71/72 (+A) (HBB: c.217_218insA) (prevalence 0.70%, 0.68%, and 0.2%, respectively). Based on mutation frequencies calculated in this study, estimates of 5021 babies in Vietnam are affected with clinically severe thalassemia annually. Our data suggest a higher thalassemia carrier frequency in Vietnam than previously reported. We established that combining NGS with gap-PCR creates an effective large-scale thalassemia screening method that can detect a broad range of mutations.
