PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between digital skills and employment and in this way accentuate importance of policy interventions for improving digital ...literacy.Design/methodology/approachUsing Eurostat data, this paper demonstrates statistically significant correlation between digital skills and employment rates in EU.FindingsThis implies why it is so important for governments and employers to seek, propose and implement new strategies to promote digital inclusion, literacy and the training not only for new ICT professionals but also for the whole workforce.Social implicationsDigital skills, particularly digital literacy, are an important factor for socio-economic development of the society and employability of the labour force. Without adequate digital literacy, it is not possible to participate in the economy and the digital society, particularly having in mind the digital transformation that the world of work is experiencing in the content and the organisation. Beyond the work environment, it also affects the way people live and communicate.Originality/valueIn this paper, the importance and definition of digital literacy are elaborated, explaining the measurement of digital literacy and skills, as well as the relation between digital literacy and employability.
The paper examines the efficiency and equity trade-off in the tax system. While efficiency usually recounts to how well an economy assigns limited resources to meet the needs of consumers, the goal ...of equity is to analyse the distribution of resources. Thus, it is related to the concepts of fairness and social justice. Efficiency deals with the optimal production and allocation of resources within the available production factors. In the tax system, efficiency means the ability to collect sufficient public revenues by making a tax system as simple as possible. Equity examines how available resources are distributed in the society. Vertical equity deals with the relative income and welfare of the population or with how equitably available resources are distributed. It may imply higher tax rates for citizens with higher incomes. Horizontal equity is based on the belief that earners with the same income should pay taxes at the same tax rate. The aim of the article is to identify those conditions under which there is no conflict between equity and efficiency in the tax system. The tax system is the government's main lever to redistribute income, but there is a potential balance between equity and efficiency. The idea is to determine policy measures which stimulate greater equity, but have no or little effect on efficiency. In other words, our intention is to find out policy actions where equity and efficiency support each other and where tax measures may perhaps even enable a more efficient fiscal system.

U sociološkim i ekonomskim studijama ističe se da zaposlenost nije ...samo najvažnija odrednica položaja ljudi u svakoj zemlji, već je ujedno bitna za stvaranje smisla, dohotka, socijalne stabilnosti i kvalitete života te sudjelovanja u društvu (Diamond i Lodge, 2013.; Farnsworth i Irving, 2010.). Zaposlenost se naziva »ljepilom koje drži naše društvo na okupu«. Rad se smatra najboljim oblikom socijalne skrbi, a razlozi su jasni: ekonomska neovisnost i socijalna uključenost. Tako je povećanje stope zaposlenosti postalo ključni cilj socijalne politike i politike tržišta rada razvijenih industrijskih zemalja (Grosh, del Ninno, Tesliuc, Ouerghi, 2008.; Starke, Kaasch, van Hooren, 2011.).

The evolution of modern healthcare underscores the crucial question of societal priorities in development. When distributing finite healthcare resources, decision-makers must weigh numerous factors ...and navigate a range of sometimes conflicting criteria, including equity, access, fairness, and effectiveness. This chapter aims to survey the social implications of digital literacy as a pivotal element for the optimal advancement of P5 medicine, with the objective of enhancing healthcare services. The untapped potential of telemedicine and other emerging P5 technologies remains substantial in terms of their integration into routine medical practice. Adequate digital literacy among both healthcare providers and users stands as a vital prerequisite for the successful adoption and further evolution of these innovations. Coupled with improved health literacy, these factors collectively should contribute to the provision of superior healthcare services and consequently to the overall well-being of the populace.
This paper evaluates drivers of personal overindebtedness in the European Union. Overindebtedness gives rise to poverty, social exclusion, and other serious social problems. However, the European ...Union has not adopted a common definition of overindebtedness. This paper explores whether tax policy, indicators of economic freedom, and macroeconomic traits such as the debt to gross domestic product ratio can explain private indebtedness. Sparsity-inducing regression methods applied to data from 27 European Union countries from 2013 to 2020 isolated two predictors that reduce household debt and two predictors that increase it. The level of social contributions and the overall tax burden are associated with lower private debt. Financial freedom and the ratio of public debt to gross domestic product elevate private debt. These are the only four predictive variables among 17 to attain statistical significance under all four regression methods deployed in this study. Future research should expand the methodological toolkit and examine additional demographic factors such as sex and education.
Many Croatian island municipalities depend on tourism, which provides income by usingnatural resources; however, traditional tourism is labour intensive and low-skilled whichleads to low wages and ...low possibilities to increase productivity. This paper aims toanalyse and discuss other possibilities than traditional tourist industry for the Croatianislands to develop. We will turn towards the concept of digital nomads to discuss if digitalnomads can be a solution for the Croatian islands. As a starting point, we use aconceptual model inspired by Harris and Todaro’s theoretical outline. We discuss thenew possibilities that digitalisation has opened for these islands. The digital economyhas made where and when work is performed less important. Thus, the lines betweenwork and non-work are blurred. Tourist industry must look ahead for new forms ofmobility and new kinds of work and non-work, which may bring positive exogenouseffects to the islands in the form of higher educational level, cultural activities, andpurchase power. Our main point is that turning towards attracting digital nomads can,to some extent, be a solution.
