By examining the ongoing tension between popular and official religion in Europe, this collection of essays contributes significantly to the continuing effort to understand the religious experience ...of ordinary people. Ranging from the Mediterranean to northern Europe and including both Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions, the ethnographic contexts evoked in these essays enable us to see people actively and creatively shaping their religious domain, sometimes in collaboration with official ritual specialists, often in open rebellion against them. The use of folklore texts and extensive narrative quotations, combined with an approach highlighting key symbols such as pilgrimages and festas, provides a common theoretical orientation throughout the bookone that considers how religious discourses are formed by social disciplines and relationships of power and subordination. Since its publication in 1839, the Barzaz Breiz has influenced the development of nationalism, folklore studies, and ethnography in Brittany. Presented originally as a collection of oral ballads, the ...work was later shown to consist of composite texts subject to extensive rewriting. As with the Kinder- und Hausmärchen and Poems of Ossian, the authenticity of the Barzaz Breiz has been the subject of extensive scholarly controversy, particularly within France. This paper summarizes the history of scholarship about the Barzaz Breiz and argues that it is best understood as a key element in the ongoing construction of Breton identity.
Over 80% of Canadian COVID-19 first wave deaths occurred in long-term care homes. Focussing on Ontario, I trace the antecedents of the COVID-19 crisis in long-term care and document experiences of ...frontline staff and family members of residents during the pandemic. Following Povinelli, I argue that the marginalization of both residents and workers in Ontario's long-term care system over two decades has eroded possibilities for recognition of their personhood. I also question broader societal attitudes toward aging, disability and death that make possible the abandonment of the frail elderly.

The appeal of sacred sites remains undiminished at the start of the twenty-first century, as unprecedented numbers of visitors travel to Lourdes, Rome, Jerusalem, Santiago de Compostela, and even ...Star Trek conventions. Ethnographic analysis of the conflicts over resources and meanings associated with such sites, as well as the sense of community they inspire, provides compelling evidence re-emphasizing the links between pilgrimage and tourism. As the papers in this collection demonstrate, studies of these forms of journeying are at the forefront of postmodern debates about movement and centers, global flows, social identities, and the negotiation of meanings.
This article explores the changing uses of, attitudes toward, and meanings of religious monuments in contemporary Brittany. I argue that the transformed relationship between people and religious art ...and architecture in this region corresponds to the shift between memory and history, as described by historian Pierre Nora. Increasingly divorced from "lived religion," religious buildings are now valued as sites where a material connection with the past can be maintained. Moreover, these buildings continue to perform sacred (but not necessarily Roman Catholic) functions as sites anchoring collective memory and embodying immortality, both for Bretons and for people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Throughout Catholic Europe there has been a resurgence of interest in pilgrimage since the 1990s, despite dramatic declines in regular attendance at mass and other indicators of religious practice. ...One of the less well known European pilgrimages is the Tro Breiz, or tour of Brittany, a medieval long-distance walking pilgrimage in northwestern France that has recently been revived (or recreated). On the basis of ethnographic research carried out in 2012, I argue that the Tro Breiz fulfils participants' desires for connection to a community that transcends the self and is intimately linked to a particular regional heritage and identity.
Drawing upon theoretical perspectives developed by Coleman and Elsner, this article contributes to the anthropological understanding of pilgrimage by presenting and interpreting oral narratives and ...published texts about Kerizinen, a Marian apparition shrine in Brittany, France. Since the Kerizinen apparitions have never been recognized by the Roman Catholic Church, pilgrims and shrine promoters construct a corpus of narrative evidence that serves for them to validate the shrine's authenticity, despite the ambivalence and opposition of the institutional Church. Following William A. Christian, Jr, I show how the construction of sacred history at Kerizinen involves a process of selective editing privileging certain types of narratives and narrators. / Sur la base des perspectives théoriques élaborées par Coleman et Elsner, l'auteure apporte sa contribution à la compréhension anthropologique du pèlerinage en présentant et en interprétant les narrations orales et les textes publiés à propos du sanctuaire d'apparition mariale de Kerizinen, en Bretagne. Comme les apparitions de Kerizinen n'ont jamais été reconnues par l'Église catholique, les pèlerins et les partisans du sanctuaire élaborent un corpus de preuves narratives qui leur sert à valider l'authenticité du sanctuaire, malgré l'ambivalence et l'opposition de l'Église institutionnelle. Suivant le travail de William A. Christian, Jr, l'auteure montre comment la construction de l'histoire sacrée de Kerizinen fait intervenir un processus d'édition sélective privilégiant certains types de narrations et de narrateurs.
