The Human Proteome Project (HPP) aims to discover high-stringency data for all proteins encoded by the human genome. Currently, ∼18% of the proteins in the human proteome (the missing proteins) do ...not have high-stringency evidence (for example, mass spectrometry) confirming their existence, while much additional information is available about many of these missing proteins. Here, we present MissingProteinPedia as a community resource to accelerate the discovery and understanding of these missing proteins.
The Human Proteome Project aims to catalogue the ∼20,000 proteins encoded by the human genome. In this review, Baker
et al
. focus on the missing proteins, proteins that lack high stringency proteomic evidence, and launch MissingProteinPedia, a database aimed at accelerating the search for missing proteins.
Understanding various fundamental properties of nucleons and nuclei are among the most important scientific goals at the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). With the unprecedented opportunity ...provided by the next-generation machine, the EIC might provide definitive answers to many standing puzzles and open questions in modern nuclear physics. Here we investigate one of the golden measurements proposed at the EIC, which is to obtain the spatial gluon density distribution within a lead (\(Pb\)) nucleus. The proposed experimental process is the exclusive \(J/\psi\) vector-meson production off the \(Pb\) nucleus - \(e+Pb\rightarrow e'+J/\psi+Pb'\). The Fourier transformation of the momentum transfer \(|t|\) distribution of the coherent diffraction is the transverse gluon spatial distribution. In order to measure it, the experiment has to overcome an overwhelmingly large background arising from the incoherent diffractive production, where the nucleus \(Pb'\) mostly breaks up into fragments of particles in the far-forward direction close to the hadron-going beam rapidity. In this paper, we systematically study the rejection of incoherent \(J/\psi\) production by vetoing products from these nuclear breakups - protons, neutrons, and photons, which is based on the BeAGLE event generator and the most up-to-date EIC Far-forward Interaction Region design. The achieved vetoing efficiency, the ratio between the number of vetoed events and total incoherent events, ranges from about 80% - 99% depending on \(|t|\), which can resolve at least the first minimum of the coherent diffractive distribution based on the Sar\(\it{t}\)re model. Experimental and accelerator machine challenges as well as potential improvements are discussed.
We present a detailed analysis from new multi-wavelength observations of the exceptional galaxy cluster ACT-CL J0102-4915, likely the most massive, hottest, most X-ray luminous and brightest ...Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect cluster known at redshifts greater than 0.6. The Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) collaboration discovered ACT-CL J0102-4915 as the most significant SZ decrement in a sky survey area of 755 deg super(2). Our Very Large Telescope (VLT)/FORS2 spectra of 89 member galaxies yield a cluster redshift, z = 0.870, and velocity dispersion, sigma sub(gal) = 1321 + or - 106 km s super(-1). Our Chandra observations reveal a hot and X-ray luminous system with an integrated temperature of T sub(X) = 14.5 + or - 0.1 keV and 0.5-2.0 keV band luminosity of L sub(X) = (2.19 + or - 0.11) x 10 super(45) h super(-2) sub(70) erg s super(-1). We obtain several statistically consistent cluster mass estimates; using empirical mass scaling relations with velocity dispersion, X-ray Y sub(X), and integrated SZ distortion, we estimate a cluster mass of M sub(200)a = (2.16 + or - 0.32) x 10 super(15) h super(-1) sub(70) M sub(middot in circle). We constrain the stellar content of the cluster to be less than 1% of the total mass, using Spitzer IRAC and optical imaging. The Chandra and VLT/FORS2 optical data also reveal that ACT-CL J0102-4915 is undergoing a major merger between components with a mass ratio of approximately 2 to 1. The X-ray data show significant temperature variations from a low of 6.6 + or - 0.7 keV at the merging low-entropy, high-metallicity, cool core to a high of 22 + or - 6 keV. We also see a wake in the X-ray surface brightness and deprojected gas density caused by the passage of one cluster through the other. Archival radio data at 843 MHz reveal diffuse radio emission that, if associated with the cluster, indicates the presence of an intense double radio relic, hosted by the highest redshift cluster yet. ACT-CL J0102-4915 is possibly a high-redshift analog of the famous Bullet cluster. Such a massive cluster at this redshift is rare, although consistent with the standard LambdaCDM cosmology in the lower part of its allowed mass range. Massive, high-redshift mergers like ACT-CL J0102-4915 are unlikely to be reproduced in the current generation of numerical N-body cosmological simulations.
Our objective was to review the results of carotid endarterectomies (CEAs) with Dacron patch angioplasty and intraoperative color-flow duplex scanning (CFS). In a 3-year period, patients who ...underwent CEA with Dacron patch angioplasty and intraoperative CFS were studied. We excluded patients who had primary closure, vein patch, and redo endarterectomy. Serial CFS was obtained first in the early postoperative period (one day to 3 weeks), then at 6 months, and then yearly. Intraoperative CFS abnormalities were classified as major, requiring immediate revision, or minor, which were observed. The diagnosis of recurrent stenosis by US was based on the detection of an increased peak systolic frequency (>8000 MHz) or velocity (>250 cm/second) in the internal carotid artery. There were 212 CEAs performed in 200 patients (128 men and 84 women) included in this study. Three patients (1.4%) awoke with a stroke, two (0.94%) had transient ischemic attacks, and three (1.4%) developed transient hypoglossal nerve paresis. Intraoperative CFS showed a major defect that required an immediate revision in six patients (2.8%). Minor abnormalities were detected in another 41 patients (19.3%), but no revision was necessary. In follow-up three patients were identified with a severe recurrent carotid stenosis (>80%) and they underwent redo CEA. This rate of recurrence (1.4%) is significantly lower than the rate we had previously reported in a larger study (82 of 1209, 6.8%; P = 0.003). We conclude that the combined use of Dacron patch angioplasty and intraoperative CFS after CEA is associated with a low perioperative morbidity and a low incidence of recurrent stenosis in the first 2 years after operation.
A 41-year-old white man with a 2-year history of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) was referred for psychological treatment. At the time of assessment he was being treated with Metamucil and Darvocet ...N-100s with little success. A detailed psychosocial assessment indicated several areas for cognitive-behavioral intervention. Nine months after the patient began treatment, the frequency of IBS episodes had greatly reduced, he was off narcotic pain medication, and his general health was improved as measured by clinic and emergency room visits. We suggest that psychological interventions of the type described here can be an efficacious and cost-effective treatment for IBS.
