Plasminogen and its active form, plasmin, have diverse functions related to the inflammatory response in mammals. Due to these roles in inflammation, plasminogen has been implicated in the ...progression of a wide range of diseases with an inflammatory component. In this review, we discuss the functions of plasminogen in inflammatory regulation and how this system plays a role in the pathogenesis of diseases spanning organ systems throughout the body.
Objectives
Provision of oral health care (OHC), including oral hygiene (OH) or oral/dental treatment, to dependent older people (DOP) is frequently insufficient. We aimed to assess barriers and ...facilitators perceived by different healthcare professionals towards providing OHC to DOP.
Materials and methods
A systematic review was performed. Studies reporting on knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs acting as barriers and facilitators for provision of OHC were included. One database (PubMed) was searched and data extraction independently performed by two reviewers. Thematic analysis was used and identified themes translated to the domains and constructs of the theoretical domains framework (TDF) and aligned with the domains of the behavior change wheel (BCW). Analyses were stratified for the two target behaviors (providing oral hygiene and providing oral/dental treatment) and according to different stakeholders’ perspective. For quantitative analysis, frequency effect sizes (FES) were calculated.
Results
In total, 1621 articles were identified and 41 (32 quantitative, 7 qualitative, 2 mixed method) studies included. Within these 41 studies, there were 7333 participants (4367 formal caregivers, 67 informal caregivers, 1100 managers of care, 1322 dentists, 340 DOP). Main barriers for providing OH were “lack of knowledge” (FES 65%, COM-B domain: capability, TDF domain: knowledge) and “patients refusing care” (62%, opportunity, environmental context and resources). Main facilitators were “OHC training/education” (41%, capability, skills) and “presence of a dental professional” (21%, opportunity, environmental context and resources). Main barriers for provision of dental treatment were “lack of suitable facilities for treatment/transportation of patients” (76%) and “patients refusing care” (53%) (both: opportunity, environmental context and resources). Main facilitators were “regular visiting dentist” (35%) and “routine assessment/increased awareness by staff” (35%) (both: opportunity, environmental context and resources).
Conclusions
A number of barriers and facilitators for providing different aspects of OHC were identified for different stakeholders.
Clinical relevance
Our findings help provide the evidence to develop implementation strategies for providing high-quality systematic OHC to DOP.

Clinicians are currently unable to quantify the psychosocial, functional, and esthetic effects of prosthetic interventions to replace teeth. Understanding the effects of treatment to replace teeth on ...oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) is important for informed consent. A systematic review of the evidence of OHRQoL improvements with prosthodontic tooth replacement and a comparison of outcomes between treatment modalities is therefore indicated.
The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the OHRQoL of patients with partial edentulism after different dental prosthetic treatments.
Electronic database and manual searches were conducted to identify cohort studies and clinical trials reporting on the OHRQoL of individuals receiving implant-supported crowns (ISCs), implant-supported fixed dental prostheses (IFDPs), implant-supported removable dental prostheses (IRDPs), tooth-supported fixed dental prostheses (TFDPs), and removable partial dentures (RPDs). Two reviewers independently conducted article selection, data extraction, and quality assessment. Random-effects models were used to compare OHRQoL change scores (standardized mean change, 95% confidence intervals).
Of the 2147 identified studies, 2 randomized controlled trials and 21 cohort studies met the inclusion criteria. Overall, studies were of low or moderate risk of bias. Pooled mean OHRQoL change ≤9 months was 15.3 for TFDP, 11.9 for RPD, and 14.9 for IFDP. Pooled standardized mean change OHRQoL change >9 months was 13.2 for TFDP and 15.8 for IFDP. Direct comparisons ≤9 months between TFDP against IFDP and RPD against IFDP significantly favored IFDP in both cases.
TFDP and IFDP had short- and long-term positive effects on OHRQoL. RPDs positively affected OHRQoL in the short term. IFDP showed greater short-term improvement in OHRQoL than RPD and TFDP.
T cell specificity emerges from a myriad of processes, ranging from the biological pathways that control T cell signaling to the structural and physical mechanisms that influence how TCRs bind ...peptides and MHC proteins. Of these processes, the binding specificity of the TCR is a key component. However, TCR specificity is enigmatic: TCRs are at once specific but also cross-reactive. Although long appreciated, this duality continues to puzzle immunologists and has implications for the development of TCR-based therapeutics. In this review, we discuss TCR specificity, emphasizing results that have emerged from structural and physical studies of TCR binding. We show how the TCR specificity/cross-reactivity duality can be rationalized from structural and biophysical principles. There is excellent agreement between predictions from these principles and classic predictions about the scope of TCR cross-reactivity. We demonstrate how these same principles can also explain amino acid preferences in immunogenic epitopes and highlight opportunities for structural considerations in predictive immunology.
The structural determinants of health include social, economic and political mechanisms which generate social stratification and the socioeconomic positions of individuals within society. Despite ...their importance, these ‘causes of the causes’ are still relatively under‐studied within oral health research. Yet it is important to assess the effects of these ‘upstream’ determinants, given that most individuals cannot influence or change them. It is also important to move beyond focusing primarily on downstream determinants and approaches at the individual or household level. This review will offer a brief overview of what is currently known about structural determinants and upstream interventions in relation to oral health. The review starts by briefly summarizing oral health focused studies of structural determinants, including welfare regimes, governance and macroeconomic, social and public policies. Current knowledge on upstream interventions associated with oral health such as community water fluoridation, sugar sweetened beverage taxes and dental payment structures will also be covered. The article will then assess gaps in the research base, including current limitations and barriers—as well as opportunities—in analysing the effects of structural determinants and upstream interventions. The review finishes by suggesting next steps for better understanding and addressing these determinants and interventions—including considerations around theory, data and approaches from other fields such as systems science—with the hope that these can help make contributions to future policy decision making processes.

To compare swimming velocity of boys and girls for all ...Olympic-length freestyle swimming events to determine the age of divergence in swimming performance.
We collected the all-time top 100 U.S. freestyle swimming performance times of boys and girls age 5 to 18 years for the 50m to 1500m events.
Swimming performance improved with increasing age for boys and girls (p<0.001) until reaching a plateau, which initiated at a younger age for girls (15 years) than boys (17 years; sex×age; p<0.001). Prior to age 10, the top 5 swimming records for girls were 3% faster than the top boys (p<0.001). For the 10th-50th places, however, there were no sex-related differences in swimming performance prior to age 10 (p = 0.227). For both the top 5 and 10th-50th places, the sex difference in performance increased from age 10 (top 5, 2.5%; 10th-50th places, 1.0%) until age 17 (top 5, 7.6%; 10th-50th places, 8.0%). For all places, the sex difference in performance at age 18 was larger for sprint events (9.6%; 50-200m) than endurance events (7.1%; 400-1500m; p<0.001). Additionally, the sex-related difference in performance increased across age and US ranking from 2.4% for 1st place to 4.3% for 100th place (p<0.001), indicating less depth of performance in girls than boys. However, annual participation was ~20% higher in girls than boys for all ages (p<0.001).
The top 5 girls demonstrated faster swimming velocities and the 10th-50th place girls demonstrated similar swimming velocities than boys (until ~10 years). After age 10, however, boys demonstrated increasingly faster swimming velocities than girls until 17 years. Collectively, these data suggest girls are faster, or at least not slower, than boys prior to the performance-enhancing effects of puberty.

To explore and assess what is known about oral health promotion through health-promoting primary schools in developing countries.
A scoping review was conducted using the Arksey & O'Malley framework. ...Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane Library were searched, followed by the reference lists of the resulting studies. The UN classification of developing countries was used to define the countries included and the search was between 1986 and 2021. Quality assessment was carried out using Joanna Briggs Institute's quality appraisal tools.
The search resulted in 33 studies of which almost half were randomized controlled trials. The oral health promotion strategies were oral health education (n = 16) delivered by teachers, parents or peers, or multicomponent involving both toothbrushing (n = 15) and dietary components (n = 2). Most of the included studies were conducted in Asia (n = 25/33).
Findings suggested that comprehensive, multicomponent theory-based oral health promotion showed improvements in oral health outcomes of schoolchildren, particularly if delivered using a whole-school approach. However, further research on feasibility and implementation of oral health promotion through health-promoting primary schools in developing countries should be considered.
Background and aim Parkinson's disease is the fastest growing and second most common progressive neurodegenerative condition in the UK; poised to represent a major societal and health care challenge. ...The scoping review aims to provide an overview of the literature on the oral health (OH) experiences of people living with Parkinson's, identifying current research gaps and future priorities.Method Search strategies included three electronic databases, two grey literature databases, relevant organisations, specialist journals and hand searching of the reference lists. A data extraction tool was developed and piloted.Results A total of 121 items were included in the review. Four themes were identified: OH impact, education and training, service delivery and wider impacts of OH for people with Parkinson's (PwP). The majority of studies included were cross-sectional in design, describing the OH status of PwP.Conclusion The majority of research to date has focused on OH impact. Areas for future research include use of qualitative studies exploring the experiences, attitudes and priorities of PwP and their care partners. Inclusion of medical, dental and allied health care professionals, together with people with lived experience, is required to develop, implement and evaluate interventions to support OH.
Existing methods in social oral epidemiology primarily utilize statistical models that assume static characteristics of individuals and environments. While useful, an over reliance on these methods ...in the social and behavioural sciences can unnecessarily limit perspective and progress as even the most advanced statistical methods cannot capture complex behaviour over time given that systems evolve, environments respond, and behaviours and beliefs crystalize or deteriorate based on a variety of social, environmental and access variables. The recent consensus statement on Future Directions for the Behavioral and Social Sciences in Oral Health acknowledges that dental, oral and craniofacial health emerge from the complex interplay of multiple factors at multiple levels over time and highlights the need for the incorporation of new and underutilized methodologies. Complex Systems Science offers a suite of tools and methodologies that are responsive to the generative mechanisms and processes that underlie population distributions of oral health and disease. Specifically, they assume intricate, dynamic interactions between individuals and groups, they facilitate the study and synthesis of interconnections between people (e.g. patients, healthcare providers and policy makers), how these change over time, any differences across settings, and provide an opportunity to guide future longitudinal data collection and intervention science more effectively. This paper aims to provide an introduction to foundational principles of complex systems, complex systems thinking, and methods found in complex systems science, including social network analysis, system dynamics models and agent‐based models, and offers perspectives on the challenges faced and opportunities afforded in the incorporation of these methods into the population oral health sciences.

To describe trends in gender disparities in first and last authorship ...in the most cited dental publications and general dental literature over a 20-year period.
Articles and bibliometric data were retrieved from the Scopus database for the period 1996 to 2015. Two groups of 1000 articles each were retrieved: a random sample and another sample of top-cited articles for each year. The gender of the first and last author of each publication was manually identified. When this was not possible, we used an online software platform (https://genderize.io/). Descriptive analyses identified the proportion of women first and last authors in both samples, stratifying by dental discipline and geographic region. Trends were ascertained by frequency metrics across years. Gender disparity was observed in both first and last authorship, with a larger gap being observed in the top-cited sample.
Women led 28.4% and 20.3% of articles in the random and top-cited samples, respectively. A similar pattern was observed for the last authorship group (22.1% and 16.1%, respectively). An increasing trend in the proportion of articles led by women over time was observed in both samples. This increase was larger in the top-cited sample (from 15.0% in 1996-2000 to 25.1% in 2015) than in the random sample (from 26.3% in 1996-2000 to 33.2% in 2011).
Clear gender disparities in dental research publications in the last 20 years were identified in both general and top-cited manuscripts, across dental disciplines, across countries, across first and last authorship, and over time. It is paramount that actions are taken to attract, retain and promote women in science, as well as to monitor and ensure progress towards gender equity.
