Every year, immunization prevents about 4-5 million child fatalities from vaccine preventable morbidities. Conversely, in Ethiopia, achieving full coverage of vaccination has continued to be ...challenging. Socio-demographic, caregivers and child related factors determine vaccination coverage. Therefore, this study aimed to find out recent coverage, trends in coverage, and its predictors in eastern Ethiopia.
A population-based longitudinal study design was conducted among 14,246 children aged 12-24 months from 2017 to 2021 in Kersa Health and Demographic Surveillance System site (KHDSS). The data were collected from caregivers of the child by face to face interview. Multinomial logistic regressions were used to identify predictors of vaccination. The association between vaccination coverage and its predictors was presented by adjusted odds ratio with 95% confidence interval. A p-value of <0.05 was used to establish statistical significance.
From the 14,198 included children, only 39% of children were fully vaccinated, with highest proportion in 2020 (45%) and lowest proportion in 2019 (32%). In comparison to fully vaccinated, being partially vaccinated was positively associated with older maternal age, rural residence, unemployment, rich wealth index, no antenatal care, facility delivery, and birth order whereas negatively associated with semi-urban residence. In compared to fully vaccinated, being not vaccinated was positively associated with older maternal age, rural residence, maternal education, unemployment, and no antenatal care whereas negatively associated with semi-urban residence, poor wealth index, multipara, grand multipara, and facility delivery.
Less than two-fifths of children aged 12 to 24 months were fully vaccinated. Socio-demographic factors and maternity care utilization were found to be predictors of vaccination coverage. Therefore, strategies that emphasize women's empowerment in terms of education, economy, and employment status, and enhancing maternal healthcare utilization may improve vaccination coverage.
We present a prototype of the flood early warning system (EWS) developed within the UrbanFlood FP7 project. The system monitors sensor networks installed in flood defenses (dikes, dams, embankments, ...etc.), detects sensor signal abnormalities, calculates dike failure probability, and simulates possible scenarios of dike breaching and flood propagation. All the relevant information and simulation results are fed into an interactive decision support system that helps dike managers and city authorities to make informed decisions in case of emergency and in routine dike quality assessment. In addition to that, a Virtual Dike computational module has been developed for advanced research into dike stability and failure mechanisms, and for training the artificial intelligence module on signal parameters induced by dike instabilities. This paper describes the UrbanFlood EWS generic design and functionality, the computational workflow, the individual modules, their integration via the Common Information Space middleware, and the first results of EWS monitoring and performance benchmarks.
Human immunodeficiency virus infection has been one of the top health-related challenges for the past four decades. Ethiopia is extremely infected by HIV pandemic every year, whereby 22,300 people ...were newly infected and 690,000 were living with HIV at the end of 2018. Sexual behavior of HIV positive individuals visiting treatment clinics is a neglected issue. Nonetheless, it has been a significant way of HIV transmission to serodiscordant partners.
A facility-based cross-sectional study design was used on a sample of 432 women attending treatment clinics in west Oromia from February 26 to March 26, 2019. Systematic sampling was used to select the study participants. A pretested and structured interviewer-administered questionnaires were used to collect the data. The data were coded, entered, cleaned and exported to SPSS version 20.0 for analysis. Descriptive statistics were used to present frequency distributions. Variables with P-value <0.25 during bivariate analysis were entered into multiple logistic regression models to control for all possible confounders. Odds ratio along with 95% CI were estimated to measure the strength of the association. Level of statistical significance was declared at a p-value less than 0.05.

Even though most sub-Saharan Africa adopted the World Health organization guidelines for malaria prevention, the coverage of insecticide-treated nets by pregnant women is low, where 28 million ...pregnant women did not receive insecticide-treated nets services. Likewise, only 13-51.4% of pregnant women utilize insecticide-treated nets in Ethiopia.
A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Miesso woreda from April 01 to 30, 2017, among 424 pregnant women. A multi-stage cluster sampling technique was used to select the study participants. A structured interviewer-based administered questionnaire and observational checklist were used to collect the data. The collected data were entered into Epi data version 3.1 and exported to SPSS version 23 for analysis. Multiple logistic regression models were fitted to identify factors associated with insecticide-treated nets utilization. Adjusted odds ratios along 95% CI were estimated to measure the strength of the association and declared statistical significance at a p-value < 0.05.
Of a total respondents, 39.9% (95% CI: 34.9-44.2%) utilize insecticide-treated nets. Pregnant women from rural (AOR = 2.05, 95% CI: 1.14, 3.38), employed women (AOR = 1.80, 95% CI: 1.13, 2.86), monthly income >1050 Ethiopian total birr (AOR = 2.02, 95% CI: 1.06, 3.84), third trimester pregnancy (AOR = 2.19, 95% CI: 1.09, 4.40), and having antenatal care for current pregnancy (AOR = 3.86, 95% CI: 1.63, 9.10) were factors significantly associated with insecticide-treated nets.
The utilization of insecticide-treated nets is relatively low. Residence, occupational status, monthly income, stage of pregnancy, and antenatal care status were factors significantly associated with insecticide-treated net utilization among pregnant women.
The measurement of the production of charm jets, identified by the presence of a D$^{0}$ meson in the jet constituents, is presented in proton–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of $ ...\sqrt{s} $ = 5.02 and 13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The D$^{0}$ mesons were reconstructed from their hadronic decay D$^{0}$ → K$^{−}$π$^{+}$ and the respective charge conjugate. Jets were reconstructed from D$^{0}$-meson candidates and charged particles using the anti-k$_{T}$ algorithm, in the jet transverse momentum range 5 < p$_{T,chjet}$< 50 GeV/c, pseudorapidity |η$_{jet}$| < 0.9 − R, and with the jet resolution parameters R = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6. The distribution of the jet momentum fraction carried by a D$^{0}$ meson along the jet axis $ \left({z}_{\Big\Vert}^{\textrm{ch}}\right) $ was measured in the range 0.4 <$ {z}_{\Big\Vert}^{\textrm{ch}} $< 1.0 in four ranges of the jet transverse momentum. Comparisons of results for different collision energies and jet resolution parameters are also presented. The measurements are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo event generators based on leading-order and next-to-leading-order perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. A generally good description of the main features of the data is obtained in spite of a few discrepancies at low p$_{T,chjet}$. Measurements were also done for R = 0.3 at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 5.02 and are shown along with their comparisons to theoretical predictions in an appendix to this paper.graphic not available: see fulltext
Health-care workers (HCWs) are among the highest risk groups for COVID-19 infection. The vaccine is found to be vital for HCWs, their household contacts, and their patients to protect against ...COVID-19 infection and maintain the safety of health systems. The actual willingness to pay for COVID-19 vaccination and associated factors remain uncertain among health-care workers in Ethiopia. Therefore, studying health-care workers' willingness to pay (WTP) for COVID-19 vaccination helps to have an insight on valuation of the vaccine.
Institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 403 randomly selected health-care workers working in health facilities in eastern Ethiopia from February 3 to March 20, 2021. Pretested structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Binary logistic regression analysis was fitted to test the associations between outcome and explanatory variables. A p-value of <0.05 with 95% confidence interval was used to declare statistical significance.
The magnitude of willingness to pay for a COVID-19 vaccine was 42.8%. The median amounts of money respondents willing to pay was 400 ETB (US$ 10.04). Sex (male, AOR = 2.33; 95% CI: 1.39, 3.93), monthly income (>7000 ETB, AOR = 1.22; 95% CI: 1.11, 2.51), affordability (AOR = 1.99; 95% CI: 1.18, 3.35), fear of side effects (AOR = 3.75; 95% CI: 2.13, 6.60), support vaccinations (AOR = 2.97; 95% CI: 1.65, 5.35), the likelihood of getting COVID-19 infection (AOR = 2.11; 95% CI: 1.26, 3.52) were independent determinants of WTP for a COVID-19 vaccine.
Health-care workers' willingness to pay for COVID-19 vaccination was found to be low. Detailed health education and training about COVID-19 vaccines are required regarding their side effects, and efficacy to make an informed decision to enhance the willingness to pay for the vaccine. Moreover, the government should consider providing COVID vaccines free of charge for low-income groups and at an affordable price for those who could pay.
In this paper we describe a Grid-enabled system for monitoring HLA-based applications to enable load balancing by migration of federates. The monitoring is based on the OCM-G system 2.We show how the ...design concepts of the OCM-G enable easy adaptation to monitoring of HLA, C++-based applications. The solution presented in this paper is transparent to the user application and does not require any changes to the original HLA RTI code. We also describe the role of monitoring the whole system for managing execution of HLA-based applications described in 25. We discuss implementation issues and present test results for the monitoring overhead.
The ViroLab Virtual Laboratory is a collaborative platform for scientists representing multiple fields of expertise while working together on common scientific goals. This environment makes it ...possible to combine efforts of computer scientists, virology and epidemiology experts and experienced physicians to support future advances in HIV-related research and treatment. The paper explains the challenges involved in building a modern, inter-organizational platform to support science and gives an overview of solutions to these challenges. Examples of real-world problems applied in the presented environment are also described to prove the feasibility of the solution.
The use of the Grid for interactive applications imposes new requirements on tools
supporting performance analysis, which are not well addressed by tools available in
the area of parallel and ...distributed programming. The two most important demands are
an on-line mode of operation, and the ability to measure user-defined,
application-specific metrics, such as, for example, the response time of a specific
user interaction. The paper starts with an analysis of these requirements, which is
based on real-world applications developed in the European CrossGrid project. The
most important feature of these applications is the presence of a person in the main
computing loop, who inspects intermediate results and controls the further behavior
of the application. Based on the results of the requirements analysis, a new
performance analysis tool G-PM is currently being implemented. The paper outlines
the main ideas as well as some design details of GPM, with a focus on the concept of
user-defined metrics, the possible problems of this concept, and some of its
implementation aspects.
