Identifying motivation for enrollment in MOOCs has been an important way to predict participant success rates. But themes for motivation have largely centered around themes for enrolling in any MOOC, ...and not ones specific to the course being studied. In this study, qualitatively coding discussion forums was combined with topic modeling to identify participants’ motivation for enrolling in two successive statistics education professional development online courses. Computational text mining, such as topic modeling, is a learning analytics field that has proven effective in analyzing large volumes of text to automatically identify topics or themes. This contrasts with traditional qualitative approaches, in which researchers manually apply labels (or codes) to parts of text to identify common themes. Combining topic modeling and qualitative research may prove useful to education researchers and practitioners in better understanding and improving online learning contexts that feature asynchronous discussion. Three topic modeling approaches were used in this study, including both unsupervised and semi-supervised modeling techniques. The three topic modeling approaches were validated and compared to determine which participants were assigned motivation themes that most closely aligned to their posts made in an introductory discussion forum. A discussion of how each technique can be useful for identifying topical themes within discussion forum data is included. Though the three techniques have varying success rates in identifying motivation for enrolling in the MOOCs, they do all identify similar themes for motivation that are specific to statistics education.
The MYC oncogene is a potent driver of growth and proliferation but also sensitises cells to apoptosis, which limits its oncogenic potential. MYC induces several biosynthetic programmes and primary ...cells overexpressing MYC are highly sensitive to glutamine withdrawal suggesting that MYC-induced sensitisation to apoptosis may be due to imbalance of metabolic/energetic supply and demand. Here we show that MYC elevates global transcription and translation, even in the absence of glutamine, revealing metabolic demand without corresponding supply. Glutamine withdrawal from MRC-5 fibroblasts depletes key tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle metabolites and, in combination with MYC activation, leads to AMP accumulation and nucleotide catabolism indicative of energetic stress. Further analyses reveal that glutamine supports viability through TCA cycle energetics rather than asparagine biosynthesis and that TCA cycle inhibition confers tumour suppression on MYC-driven lymphoma in vivo. In summary, glutamine supports the viability of MYC-overexpressing cells through an energetic rather than a biosynthetic mechanism.
We report three cases of infection due to the Gram-negative rod Ignatzschineria (Schineria) indica involving bacteremia and the urinary tract. Two cases were clearly associated with maggot ...infestation, and the third could conceivably have had unrecognized maggot infestation of the urinary tract. We believe these cases to be the first I. indica infections reported in association with maggot infestation and myiasis.
Post‐transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is an uncommon complication after solid‐organ transplants and hematopoietic stem cell transplants. Isolated involvement of the skin without ...systemic involvement in PTLD is extremely rare. Primary cutaneous PTLD is generally categorized as either cutaneous T‐cell lymphoma or cutaneous B‐cell lymphoma, with variable Epstein‐Barr virus (EBV) positivity. Herein, we describe an exceedingly uncommon case of a primary cutaneous Hodgkin‐like polymorphic PTLD. A man in his 60s, with a history of kidney transplant, presented with a 5‐week history of two indurated plaques. Clinical, histologic and immunohistochemical findings were consistent with primary cutaneous Hodgkin‐like polymorphic PTLD. Reduction in immunosuppression led to resolution of his lesions. This case highlights a rare case of primary cutaneous Hodgkin‐like PTLD and increases awareness of this uncommon post‐transplant complication. It also underscores the importance of collaboration between dermatology, hematology, dermatopathology and hematopathology in order to diagnose challenging cases.

Forces of sustainability combined with the grafting of technology onto bodies and buildings are re-shaping urban development – catalyzing the emergence of new urban morphologies. Here stochastic and biomimetic research methods and modeling generate new morphological urban forms. Opportunities are revealed through IoE sensory information and infrastructural systems’ analysis.
Hidrocystomas are benign cysts of sweat duct epithelium that can present as single or multiple lesions, with or without pigmentation. The size is typically 1-3mm in diameter. Although hidrocystomas ...commonly occur in most parts of the head and neck region, occurrence on the scalp is rare. Herein, we present a 29-year-old woman with a giant pigmented apocrine hidrocystoma of the scalp, which, to our knowledge, represents the largest of its kind reported to date.
Dung beetles Onthophagus taurus lay their eggs in brood balls within dung pats. The dung that is used must be sufficiently fresh, and so beetles must keep moving from pat to pat to find fresh dung. ...If another beetle finds a brood ball it will usually eat the egg inside and lay its own egg in the brood ball instead of constructing its own ball. Thus, beetles will often stay near their eggs to guard them. We model a population of beetles where the times of arrival and departure from pats are strategic choices, and investigate optimal strategies depending upon environmental conditions, which can be reduced to two key parameters, the cost of brood ball construction and the ease of finding balls to parasitise. We predict that beetles should follow one of three distinct behaviors; stay in patches for only short periods, arrive late and be purely parasitic, remain in pats for longer periods in order to guard their brood balls. Under different conditions populations can consist of the first of these types only, a combination of the first and second types, or a combination of all three types.
► We build a model of population of Onthophagus taurus that steal brood balls made by others. ► We investigate optimal strategies depending upon environment. ► The key parameters are ball construction cost and ease of finding balls. ► We predict that actual stealing may be at a relatively low frequency.
Parathyroid carcinoma is an uncommon malignancy and a rare cause of primary hyperparathyroidism. Although this tumor is capable of metastasis, metastatic disease is very uncommon intracranially, with ...only seven cases reported in the literature. When intracranial metastases occur, they typically present months to years following the diagnosis of the primary tumor with hypercalcemia refractory to medical conservative treatment. Aggressive surgical resection of all metastases is necessary for control of the disease. We report a case of metastatic parathyroid carcinoma with two intracranial metastatic foci (in the left frontal lobe and left cerebellar hemisphere) identified at the time of the primary tumor diagnosis in a patient who presented with symptomatic hypercalcemia.
