momentum range and provides heavy-ion experiments with new opportunities to study parton-medium interactions at RHIC and LHC energies, where the creation of deconfined quark-gluon matter has been established. The detector is based on novel advances to the pressurized gaseous ring imaging Cherenkov (RICH) concept, which yield a very compact, high resolution addition to existing heavy-ion experiments. We conclude that in order for the device to yield statistically significant results not only for single particle measurements, but also for di-hadron and jet-tagged correlation studies, it has to cover contiguously up to 30% of a central barrel detector in radial direction. This will allow, for the first time, identified charged hadron measurements in jets. In this paper we summarize the physics motivations for such a device, as well as its conceptual design, layout, and integration into ALICE.
A measurement of beauty hadron production at mid-rapidity in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy sNN=5.02 TeV is presented. The semi-inclusive decay channel of beauty ...hadrons into J/ψ is considered, where the J/ψ mesons are reconstructed in the dielectron decay channel at mid-rapidity down to transverse momenta of 1.3 GeV/c. The bb¯ production cross section at mid-rapidity, dσbb¯/dy, and the total cross section extrapolated over full phase space, σbb¯, are obtained. This measurement is combined with results on inclusive J/ψ production to determine the prompt J/ψ cross sections. The results in p–Pb collisions are then scaled to expectations from pp collisions at the same centre-of-mass energy to derive the nuclear modification factor RpPb, and compared to models to study possible nuclear modifications of the production induced by cold nuclear matter effects. RpPb is found to be smaller than unity at low pT for both J/ψ coming from beauty hadron decays and prompt J/ψ.

We report on studies of layout and performance of a new Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector using for the first time pressurized C4F8O radiator gas and a photon detector consisting of a MWPC equipped ...with a CsI photocathode. In particular, we present here the results of beam tests of a MWPC having an adjustable anode–cathode gap, aiming at the optimization of single photoelectron detection and Cherenkov angle resolution. This system was proposed as a Very High Momentum Particle Identification (VHMPID) upgrade for the ALICE experiment at LHC to provide charged hadron track-by-track identification in the momentum range 5–25GeV/c.
•The concept and design of a novel RICH counter operated with pressurized gaseous Cherenkov radiator have been validated.•We used for the first time C4F8O gaseous Cherenkov radiator pressurized up to 3.5atm in a RICH counter.•The refractive index of C4F8O in the UV range is similar to the per-mil level to that of C4F10.•A variable gap MWPC has been used to optimize the layout of the gaseous photon counter, based on CsI photocathodes and MWPC, for the detection of single photoelectrons.

Jet-matter interaction remains a central question and a theoretical challenge in heavy-ion physics and might become important in high-multiplicity events in proton-proton collisions at LHC energies. ...Full jet measurement at LHC offer the proper tool to investigate energy loss process and fragmentation of hard parton in the medium. Since jet reconstruction will be constrained to small cone sizes, then study of the connection between jets and surrounding environment provides a further possibility to extend our exploration. We study jets at 14 TeV and pp collisions at 7 TeV. We analyze the flavor components in jet-like environments. We introduce a definition for surrounding cones/belts and investigate flavor dependence and correlation of different hadron species produced in jets. Here, we focus on proton-triggered correlations. Our analysis can be extended for heavy ion collisions.
AbstractRecent RHIC results on pion production in AuAu collision at \(\sqrt{s}=130\) and 200 AGeV display a strong suppression effect at high pT. This suppression can be connected to final state ...effects, namely jet energy loss induced by the produced dense colored matter. Applying our pQCD-based parton model we perform a quantitative analysis of the measured suppression pattern and determine the opacity of the produced deconfined matter. production is calculated in a leading order (LO) perturbative QCD-based model in
pp and
dAu collisions at
s
=
200
AGeV
at midrapidity. The model includes the transverse ...component of the initial parton distribution. We compare our results for
pp collision to experimental data at RHIC energy. We repeat our calculation for the
dAu collision and investigate the interplay between shadowing and multiple scattering. In central
dAu collisions the influence of possible jet energy loss in cold nuclear matter is discussed and numerical results are presented.
The polarization of the Λ and Λover ¯ hyperons along the beam (z) direction, P_{z}, has been measured in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrts_{NN}=5.02 TeV recorded with ALICE at the Large Hadron Collider ...(LHC). The main contribution to P_{z} comes from elliptic flow-induced vorticity and can be characterized by the second Fourier sine coefficient P_{z,s2}=⟨P_{z}sin(2φ-2Ψ_{2})⟩, where φ is the hyperon azimuthal emission angle and Ψ_{2} is the elliptic flow plane angle. We report the measurement of P_{z,s2} for different collision centralities and in the 30%-50% centrality interval as a function of the hyperon transverse momentum and rapidity. The P_{z,s2} is positive similarly as measured by the STAR Collaboration in Au-Au collisions at sqrts_{NN}=200 GeV, with somewhat smaller amplitude in the semicentral collisions. This is the first experimental evidence of a nonzero hyperon P_{z} in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. The comparison of the measured P_{z,s2} with the hydrodynamic model calculations shows sensitivity to the competing contributions from thermal and the recently found shear-induced vorticity, as well as to whether the polarization is acquired at the quark-gluon plasma or the hadronic phase.
An invariant differential cross section measurement of inclusive π0 and η meson production at mid-rapidity in pp collisions at s=8 TeV was carried out by the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The spectra ...of π0 and η mesons were measured in transverse momentum ranges of 0.3<pT<35 GeV/c and 0.5<pT<35 GeV/c, respectively. Next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations using fragmentation functions DSS14 for the π0 and AESSS for the η overestimate the cross sections of both neutral mesons, although such calculations agree with the measured η/π0 ratio within uncertainties. The results were also compared with PYTHIA 8.2 predictions for which the Monash 2013 tune yields the best agreement with the measured neutral meson spectra. The measurements confirm a universal behavior of the η/π0 ratio seen for NA27, PHENIX and ALICE data for pp collisions from s=27.5 GeV to s=8 TeV within experimental uncertainties. A relation between the π0 and η production cross sections for pp collisions at s=8 TeV is given by mT scaling for pT>3.5 GeV/c. However, a deviation from this empirical scaling rule is observed for transverse momenta below pT<3.5 GeV/c in the η/π0 ratio with a significance of 6.2σ.
