Education in ecology and evolution often utilizes field instruction to teach key learning outcomes. Remote teaching of learning outcomes that have been traditionally taught in the field, necessitated ...by the COVID‐19 pandemic, presents unique challenges for students, instructors, and institutions. A survey of 117 faculty conducted during spring 2020 revealed substantial reduction of learning outcomes typically taught in the field, and frequent substitutions of less active and more instructor‐centered remote activities for field activities. The survey revealed generally negative instructor views on many remote teaching substitutions, yet also showed several approaches that instructors regarded as more effective, despite potential challenges with equitably teaching them. I suggest several models of remote substitutions for traditional field teaching of identification, field techniques, data collection, and study design in the context of the results of this survey.

Screening program participants with iron overload (IO) phenotypes without HFE p.C282Y/p.C282Y are incompletely characterized. We studied white participants who had IO phenotypes without ...p.C282Y/p.C282Y in post-screening clinical examinations (CE). We defined IO phenotypes as a) elevated serum ferritin (SF) and transferrin saturation (TS) at screening and CE, and b) absence of IO treatment, anemia, transfusion >10 units, alcohol intake >30 g/d, hepatitis B or C, and pregnancy. We defined IO-related disease as elevated alanine or aspartate aminotransferase (ALT/AST) or swelling/tenderness of 2nd/3rd metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints. All participants had HFE p.C282Y and p.H63D genotyping. There were 32 men and 26 women (mean age 54±16 y). Median food/supplemental iron intakes were 14.3/0.0 mg/d. Relative risks of HFE genotypes were 12.9 (p.C282Y/p.H63D), 3.0 (p.H63D/p.H63D), 1.9 (p.C282Y/wt), 0.9 (p.H63D/wt), and 0.5 (wt/wt) compared to 42,640 white screening participants without IO phenotypes or p.C282Y/p.C282Y. Regression on SF revealed positive associations: MCV (p = 0.0006; beta coefficient = 0.4531); swelling/tenderness of MCP joints (p = 0.0033; beta = 0.3455); and p.H63D/wt (p = 0.0015; beta = 0.4146). IO-related disease (18 elevated ALT/AST, one swelling/tenderness of MCP joints) occurred in 19 participants (7 men, 12 women). Median MCV was higher in participants with IO-related disease (97 fL vs. 94 fL; p = 0.0007). Logistic regression on IO-related disease revealed a significant association with diabetes (p = 0.0416; odds ratio 18.9 (95% confidence interval 1.0, 341.1)). In the present 58 screening program participants who had IO phenotypes without HFE p.C282Y/p.C282Y, relative risks of HFE genotypes p.C282Y/p.H63D, p.H63D/p.H63D, and p.C282Y/wt were significantly higher than in 42,640 white screening participants with neither IO phenotypes nor p.C282Y/p.C282Y. SF was significantly associated with MCV, swelling/tenderness of 2nd/3rd MCP joints, and p.H63D/wt. IO-related disease was significantly associated with MCV and diabetes.

Adults with IgG subclass deficiency (IgGSD) with subnormal IgG2 are inadequately characterized.
We retrospectively analyzed observations in unrelated adults with IgGSD evaluated in a single ...hematology clinic (1991-2019) and selected those with subnormal serum IgG2 (<117 mg/dL (<1.2 g/L)) without corticosteroid therapy to describe: age; prevalence of women; upper/lower respiratory infection; autoimmune condition(s); atopy; other allergy; frequent or severe respiratory tract infection in first-degree relatives; IgG, IgG subclasses, IgA, and IgM; blood lymphocyte subpopulations; human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A and -B types and haplotypes; and 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccination (PPSV23) responses. We determined the prevalence of subnormal IgG2 among unrelated adults with IgGSD without corticosteroid therapy and compared general characteristics of those with and without subnormal IgG2.
There were 18 patients (94.4% women) with subnormal IgG2. Mean age was 52 ± 11 y. Upper/lower respiratory infection occurred in 94.4%/74.8%, respectively. Autoimmune condition(s), atopy, other allergy, and frequent or severe respiratory infection in first-degree relatives occurred in 44.4%, 44.4%, 61.1%, and 22.2%, respectively. Median IgG2 was 105 mg/dL (83, 116). Subnormal IgG, IgG1, IgG3, IgG4, IgA, and IgM was observed in 66.7%, 50.0%, 100.0%, 5.6%, 33.3%, and 0%, respectively. Lymphocyte subpopulations were normal in most patients. HLA frequencies were similar in patients and controls. Three of 4 patients had no protective S. pneumoniae serotype-specific IgG levels before or after PPSV23. These 18 patients represent 7.6% of 236 adults with IgGSD. Prevalence of subnormal IgG, subnormal IgG3, and subnormal IgA was significantly greater in 18 adults with subnormal IgG2 than 218 adults without subnormal IgG2. Prevalence of subnormal IgM was significantly lower in patients with subnormal IgG2.
Characteristics of adults with IgGSD with subnormal IgG2 include female predominance, other immunologic abnormalities, subnormal IgG3 and/or IgG1, lack of HLA-A and -B association, and suboptimal PPSV23 response.

Wearable gas sensors have received lots of attention for diagnostic and monitoring applications, and two-dimensional (2D) materials can provide a promising platform for fabricating gas sensors that ...can operate at room temperature. In the present study, the room temperature gas-sensing performance of Ti3C2T x nanosheets was investigated. 2D Ti3C2T x (MXene) sheets were synthesized by removal of Al atoms from Ti3AlC2 (MAX phases) and were integrated on flexible polyimide platforms with a simple solution casting method. The Ti3C2T x sensors successfully measured ethanol, methanol, acetone, and ammonia gas at room temperature and showed a p-type sensing behavior. The fabricated sensors showed their highest and lowest response toward ammonia and acetone gas, respectively. The limit of detection of acetone gas was theoretically calculated to be about 9.27 ppm, presenting better performance compared to other 2D material-based sensors. The sensing mechanism was proposed in terms of the interactions between the majority charge carriers of Ti3C2T x and gas species.
IgG subclass levels in hemochromatosis are incompletely characterized.
We characterized IgG subclass levels of referred hemochromatosis probands with HFE p.C282Y/p.C282Y (rs1800562) and human ...leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A and -B typing/haplotyping and compared them with IgG subclass levels of eight published cohorts of adults unselected for hemochromatosis.
There were 157 probands (82 men, 75 women; mean age 49±13 y). Median serum ferritin, mean body mass index (BMI), median IgG4, and median phlebotomy units to achieve iron depletion were significantly higher in men. Diabetes, cirrhosis, and HLA-A*03,-B*44, -A*03,B*07, and -A*01,B*08 prevalences and median absolute lymphocyte counts in men and women did not differ significantly. Mean IgG subclass levels 95% confidence interval were: IgG1 5.31 g/L 3.04, 9.89; IgG2 3.56 g/L 1.29, 5.75; IgG3 0.61 g/L 0.17, 1.40; and IgG4 0.26 g/L <0.01, 1.25. Relative IgG subclasses were 54.5%, 36.6%, 6.3%, and 2.7%, respectively. Median IgG4 was higher in men than women (0.34 g/L 0.01, 1.33 vs. 0.19 g/L <0.01, 0.75, respectively; p = 0.0006). A correlation matrix with Bonferroni correction revealed the following positive correlations: IgG1 vs. IgG3 (p<0.01); IgG2 vs. IgG3 (p<0.05); and IgG2 vs. IgG4 (p<0.05). There was also a positive correlation of IgG4 vs. male sex (p<0.01). Mean IgG1 was lower and mean IgG2 was higher in probands than seven of eight published adult cohorts unselected for hemochromatosis diagnoses.
Mean IgG subclass levels of hemochromatosis probands were 5.31, 3.56, 0.61, and 0.26 g/L, respectively. Median IgG4 was higher in men than women. There were positive associations of IgG subclass levels. Mean IgG1 may be lower and mean IgG2 may be higher in hemochromatosis probands than adults unselected for hemochromatosis.

The thermal evolution of nanoscale oxide inclusions in 316L stainless steel (SS) manufactured by laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing (AM) was explored. The size, chemical composition, ...morphology, and distribution of the oxides were characterized as the function of heat treatment conditions. The study revealed the mechanistic driving force of the rapid oxide coarsening during recrystallization. Ostwald ripening governs oxide coarsening. The active grain boundary-oxide interaction at the early stage of recrystallization accelerated oxide coarsening via enhanced solute diffusion along grain boundaries. Pipe diffusion along dislocation cellular boundaries has a negligible contribution to oxide coarsening. At high temperatures (T > 1065 °C), although lattice diffusion primarily controlled the oxide growth, the contribution from the grain-boundary diffusion was necessary. The transformation from MnSiO3 to CrMn2O4 took place in the un-recrystallized grains but was not observed when recrystallization started. The interaction of grain boundary and oxides during recrystallization resulted in a high fraction of oxides accumulated at grain boundaries. While oxide coarsening does not significantly alter the toughness value, grain-boundary oxides promote microvoid formation and intergranular fracture under Charpy impact in the recrystallized AM 316L SS.
The descent of the westerly phase of the quasi‐biennial oscillation (QBO) in equatorial stratospheric zonal wind was interrupted by the development of easterlies near 40 hPa (~23 km altitude) in ...early 2016. We use tropical meteorological analyses of wind and temperature to describe in detail the special circumstances by which equatorward‐propagating planetary waves produced this unprecedented disruption in the QBO. Our findings show that the subtropical easterly jet in the winter lower stratosphere during the 2015–2016 winter was anomalously weak owing to (1) the timing of the QBO relative to the annual cycle and (2) an extreme El Niño event. The weak jet allowed an unusually large flux of westward momentum to propagate from the extratropical Northern Hemisphere to the equator near the 40 hPa level. Consequently, the QBO westerlies at that level experienced sustained easterly acceleration from extratropical wave breaking, leading to the observed wind reversal.

Summary Invasive fungal diseases are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in a wide range of patients, and early diagnosis and management are a challenge. We therefore did a review of the ...scientific literature to generate a series of key recommendations for the appropriate use of microbiological, histological, and radiological diagnostic methods for diagnosis of invasive fungal diseases. The recommendations emphasise the role of microscopy in rapid diagnosis and identification of clinically significant isolates to species level, and the need for susceptibility testing of all Aspergillus spp, if treatment is to be given. In this Review, we provide information to improve understanding of the importance of antigen detection for cryptococcal disease and invasive aspergillosis, the use of molecular (PCR) diagnostics for aspergillosis, and the crucial role of antibody detection for chronic and allergic aspergillosis. Furthermore, we consider the importance of histopathology reporting with a panel of special stains, and emphasise the need for urgent (<48 hours) and optimised imaging for patients with suspected invasive fungal infection. All 43 recommendations are auditable and should be used to ensure best diagnostic practice and improved outcomes for patients.
