The propagation of cosmic rays can be described as a diffusive motion in most galactic environments. High-energy gamma-rays measured by Fermi have allowed inference of a gradient in the cosmic-ray ...density and spectral energy behavior in the Milky Way, which is not predicted by models. Here, a turbulence-dependent diffusion model is used to probe different types of cosmic-ray diffusion tensors. Crucially, it is demonstrated that the observed gradients can be explained through turbulence-dependent energy-scaling of the diffusion tensor.
Very high energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) γ-ray flaring activity of the high-frequency peaked BL Lac object PG 1553+113 has been detected by the H.E.S.S. telescopes. The flux of the source increased by a ...factor of 3 during the nights of 2012 April 26 and 27 with respect to the archival measurements with a hint of intra-night variability. No counterpart of this event has been detected in the Fermi-Large Area Telescope data. This pattern is consistent with VHE γ-ray flaring being caused by the injection of ultrarelativistic particles, emitting γ-rays at the highest energies. The dataset offers a unique opportunity to constrain the redshift of this source at z = 0.49 ± 0.04 using a novel method based on Bayesian statistics. The indication of intra-night variability is used to introduce a novel method to probe for a possible Lorentz invariance violation (LIV), and to set limits on the energy scale at which Quantum Gravity (QG) effects causing LIV may arise. For the subluminal case, the derived limits are E{sub QG,1} > 4.10 × 10{sup 17} GeV and E{sub QG,2} > 2.10 × 10{sup 10} GeV for linear and quadratic LIV effects, respectively.
Context. The Galactic Center (GC) region has been studied in gamma rays in the past decades - the GC excess detected by Fermi is still not fully understood and the first detection of a PeVatron by ...H.E.S.S. indicates the existence of sources that can accelerate cosmic rays up to a PeV or higher. Aims. In this paper, we are investigating the origin of the PeVatron emission detected by H.E.S.S. by, for the first time, simulating cosmic rays in the GC in a realistic three-dimensional gas and photon field distribution and large-scale magnetic field. Methods. We solve the 3D transport equation with an anisotropic diffusion tensor using the approach of stochastic differential equations as implemented in the propagation software CRPropa 3.1 (Merten et al. 2017). We test five different source distributions for four different configurations of the diffusion tensor, i.e. with ratios of the perpendicular to parallel components \(\epsilon = 0.001,\ 0.01,\ 0.1,\ 0.3\). Results. We find that the two-dimensional distribution of gamma rays as measured by H.E.S.S. is best fit by a model that considers three cosmic-ray sources, i.e. a central source, the SNR G0.9+0.1 and the source HESS J1746-285. The fit indicates that propagation is dominated by parallel diffusion with \( \espilon = 0.001 \). Conclusions. We find that the 3D propagation in the 3D gas and B-field configurations taken from Guenduez et al. (2020) can explain the general features of the data well. We predict that CTA should be able to identify emission from SgrB2 and the six dust ridge clouds that are included in our simulations and that should be detectable with a the expected resolution of CTA of 0.033\(^\circ\).
Astro-COLIBRI is a novel tool that evaluates alerts of transient observations in real time, filters them by user-specified criteria, and puts them into their multiwavelength and multimessenger ...context. Through fast generation of an overview of persistent sources as well as transient events in the relevant phase space, Astro-COLIBRI contributes to an enhanced discovery potential of both serendipitous and follow-up observations of the transient sky. The software's architecture comprises a Representational State Transfer Application Programming Interface, both a static and a real-time database, a cloud-based alert system, as well as a website and apps for iOS and Android as clients for users. The latter provide a graphical representation with a summary of the relevant data to allow for the fast identification of interesting phenomena along with an assessment of observing conditions at a large selection of observatories around the world.
The recent detection of possible neutrino emission from the blazar TXS 0506+056 was the first high-energy neutrino associated with an astrophysical source, making this special type of active galaxies ...promising neutrino emitters. The fact that two distinct episodes of neutrino emission were detected with a separation of around 3 years suggests that emission could be periodic. Periodic emission is expected from supermassive binary black hole systems due to jet precession close to the binary's merger. Here we show that if TXS 0506+056 is a binary source then the next neutrino flare could occur before the end of 2021. We derive the binary properties that would lead to the detection of gravitational waves from this system by LISA. Our results for the first time quantify the time scale of these correlations for the example of TXS 0506+056, providing clear predictions for both the neutrino and gravitational-wave signatures of such sources.
This Letter reports the discovery of a remarkably hard spectrum source, HESS J1641-463, by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in the very high energy (VHE) domain. HESS J1641-463 remained ...unnoticed by the usual analysis techniques due to confusion with the bright nearby source HESS J1640-465. It emerged at a significance level of 8.5 standard deviations after restricting the analysis to events with energies above 4 TeV. It shows a moderate flux level of varphi(E > 1 TeV) = (3.64 0.44 sub(stat) 0.73 sub(sys)) x 10 super(-13) cm super(-2) s super(-1), corresponding to 1.8% of the Crab Nebula flux above the same energy, and a hard spectrum with a photon index of Gamma = 2.07 0.1l sub(stat) 0.20 sub(sys). It is a point-like source, although an extension up to a Gaussian width of sigma = 3 arcmin cannot be discounted due to uncertainties in the H.E.S.S. point-spread function. The VHE gamma-ray flux of HESS J1641-463 is found to be constant over the observed period when checking time binnings from the year-by-year to the 28 minute exposure timescales. HESS J1641-463 is positionally coincident with the radio supernova remnant SNR G338.5+0.1. No X-ray candidate stands out as a clear association; however, Chandra and XMM-Newton data reveal some potential weak counterparts. Various VHE gamma-ray production scenarios are discussed. If the emission from HESS J1641-463 is produced by cosmic ray protons colliding with the ambient gas, then their spectrum must extend close to 1 PeV. This object may represent a source population contributing significantly to the galactic cosmic ray flux around the knee.
Understanding the transport of energetic cosmic rays belongs to the most challenging topics in astrophysics. Diffusion due to scattering by electromagnetic fluctuations is a key process in cosmic-ray ...transport. The transition from a ballistic to a diffusive-propagation regime is presented in direct numerical calculations of diffusion coefficients for homogeneous magnetic field lines subject to turbulent perturbations. Simulation results are compared with theoretical derivations of the parallel diffusion coefficient's dependencies on the energy and the fluctuation amplitudes in the limit of weak turbulence. The present study shows that the widely-used extrapolation of the energy scaling for the parallel diffusion coefficient to high turbulence levels predicted by quasi-linear theory does not provide a universally accurate description in the resonant-scattering regime. It is highlighted here that the numerically calculated diffusion coefficients can be polluted for low energies due to missing resonant interaction possibilities of the particles with the turbulence. Five reduced-rigidity regimes are established, which are separated by analytical boundaries derived in the present work. Consequently, a proper description of cosmic-ray propagation can only be achieved by using a turbulence-level-dependent diffusion coefficient and can contribute to solving the Galactic cosmic-ray gradient problem.

. The obtained spectrum is fully compatible with previous measurements of the atmospheric neutrino flux and recent IceCube measurements of a flux of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos.

Astrospheres and wind bubbles of massive stars are believed to be sources of cosmic rays with energies E 1 TeV. These particles are not directly detectable, but their impact on surrounding matter, in ...particular ionisation of atomic and molecular hydrogen, can lead to observable signatures. A correlation study of both gamma ray emission, induced by proton-proton interactions of cosmic ray protons with kinetic energies Ep ≥ 280 MeV with ambient hydrogen, and ionisation induced by cosmic ray protons of kinetic energies Ep < 280 MeV can be performed in order to study potential sources of (sub)TeV cosmic rays.
Massive stars play an important role in explaining the cosmic ray spectrum below the knee, possibly even up to the ankle, i.e. up to energies of 1e15 eV or 1e18.5 eV, respectively. In particular, ...Supernova Remnants are discussed as one of the main candidates to explain the cosmic ray spectrum. Even before their violent deaths, during the stars' regular life times, cosmic rays can be accelerated in wind environments. High-energy gamma-ray measurements indicate hadronic acceleration binary systems, leading to both periodic gamma-ray emission from binaries like LSI+60~303 and continuous emission from colliding wind environments like Eta Carinae. The detection of neutrinos and photons from hadronic interactions are one of the most promising methods to identify particle acceleration sites. In this paper, future prospects to detect neutrinos from colliding wind environments in massive stars are investigated. In particular, the seven most promising candidates for emission from colliding wind binaries are investigated to provide an estimate of the signal strength. The expected signal of a single source is about a factor of \(5-10\) below the current IceCube sensitivity and it is therefore not accessible at the moment. What is discussed in addition is future the possibility to measure low-energy neutrino sources with detectors like PINGU and ORCA: the minimum of the atmospheric neutrino flux at around 25 GeV from neutrino oscillations provides an opportunity to reduce the background and increase the significance to searches for GeV/TeV neutrino sources. This paper presents the first idea, detailed studies including the detector's effective areas will be necessary in the future to test the feasibility of such an approach.
