Transition metal complexes are indispensable tools for any synthetic chemist. Ideally, any metal-mediated process should be fast, clean, efficient, and selective and take place in a catalytic manner. ...These criteria are especially important considering that many of the transition metals employed in catalysis are rare and expensive. One of the ways of modifying and controlling the properties of transition metal complexes is the use of appropriate ligand systems, such as pincer ligands. Usually consisting of a central aromatic backbone tethered to two two-electron donor groups by different spacers, this class of tridentate ligands have found numerous applications in various areas of chemistry, including catalysis, due to their combination of stability, activity, and variability. As we focused on pincer ligands featuring phosphines as donor groups, the lack of a general method for the preparation of both neutral (PNP) and anionic (PCP) pincer ligands using similar precursor compounds as well as the difficulty of introducing chirality into the structure of pincer ligands prompted us to investigate the use of amines as spacers between the aromatic ring and the phosphines. By introduction of aminophosphine and phosphoramidite moieties into their structure, the synthesis of both PNP and PCP ligands can be achieved via condensation reactions between aromatic diamines and electrophilic chlorophosphines (or chlorophosphites). Moreover, chiral pincer complexes can be easily obtained by using building blocks obtained from the chiral pool. Thus, we have developed a modular synthetic strategy with which the steric, electronic, and stereochemical properties of the ligands can be varied systematically. With the ligands in hand, we studied their reactivity towards different transition metal precursors, such as molybdenum, ruthenium, iron, nickel, palladium, and platinum. This has resulted in the preparation of a range of new pincer complexes, including various iron complexes, as well as the first heptacoordinated molybdenum pincer complexes and several pentacoordinated nickel complexes by using a controlled ligand decomposition pathway. In addition, we have investigated the use of some of the complexes as catalysts in different C−C coupling reactions: for example, the palladium PNP and PCP pincer complexes can be employed as catalysts in the well known Suzuki−Miyaura coupling, while the iron PNP complexes catalyze the coupling of aromatic aldehydes with ethyl diazoacetate under very mild reaction conditions to give selectively 3-hydroxyacrylates, which are otherwise difficult to prepare. While this Account presents an overview of current research on the chemistry of P−N bond containing pincer ligands and complexes, we believe that further investigations will give deeper insights into the reactivity and applicability of aminophosphine-based pincer complexes.

Here we describe the in planta use of carbon‐based nanoparticles produced by low‐cost renewable routes that are bioavailable to mature plants. Uptake of these functionalised nanoparticles directly from the soil improves photosynthesis and also increases crop production.
We show for the first time that glucose functionalisation enhances nanoparticle uptake, photoprotection and pigment production, unlocking enhanced yields. This was demonstrated in Triticum aestivum ‘Apogee’ (dwarf bread wheat) and resulted in an 18% increase in grain yield.
This establishes the viability of a functional nanomaterial to augment photosynthesis as a route to increased crop productivity.
Despite evidence that supports cannabidiol (CBD) as an anticonvulsant agent, there remains controversy over the antiseizure efficacy, possible adverse effects, and synergistic interactions with ...classic antiepileptics such as valproate (VPA). The genetic audiogenic seizure hamster from the University of Salamanca (GASH/Sal) is a reliable experimental model of generalized tonic-clonic seizures in response to intense sound stimulation. The present study examines the behavioral and molecular effects of acute and chronic intraperitoneal administrations of VPA (300 mg/kg) and CBD (100 mg/kg) on the GASH/Sal audiogenic seizures, as well as the coadministration of both drugs. The GASH/Sal animals were examined prior to and after the corresponding treatment at 45 min, 7 days, and 14 days for seizure severity and neuroethology, open-field behaviors, body weight variations, and various hematological and biochemical parameters. Furthermore, the brain tissue containing the inferior colliculus (so-called epileptogenic nucleus) was processed for reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis to determine the treatment effects on the gene expression of neuronal receptors associated with drug actions and ictogenesis. Our results indicated that single dose of VPA helps prevent the animals from getting convulsions, showing complete elimination of seizures, whereas 7 days of chronic VPA treatment had few effects in seizure behaviors. Acute CBD administration showed subtle attenuation of seizure behaviors, increasing seizure latency and decreasing the duration of the convulsion phase, but without entirely seizure abolition. Chronic CBD treatments had no significant effects on sound-induced seizures, although some animals slightly improved seizure severity. Acute and chronic CBD treatments have no significant adverse effects on body weight, hematological parameters, and liver function, although locomotor activity was reduced. The combination of VPA and CBD did not alter the therapeutic outcome of the VPA monotherapy, showing no apparent synergistic effects. . Our study shed light on the behavioral and molecular effects of CBD and VPA on the GASH/Sal model and constituted the basis to develop further studies on the pharmacological effects of CBD and its interactions with other anticonvulsants.
Purpose
– The purpose of this paper is to explore customer engagement in Twitter via data mining.
Design/methodology/approach
– This study’s intended contributions are twofold: to find a clear ...connection among customer engagement, presumption, and Web 2.0 in a context of service-dominant (S-D) logic; and to identify social networks created by prosumers. To this end, the study employed data mining techniques. Tweets about IKEA were used as a sample. The resulting algorithm based on 300 tweets was applied to 4,000 tweets to identify the patterns of electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM).
Findings
– Social networks created in IKEA’s tweets consist of three forms of eWOM: objective statements, subjective statements, and knowledge sharing. Most objective statements are disseminated from satisfied or neutral customers, while subjective statements are disseminated from dissatisfied or neutral customers. Satisfied customers mainly carry out knowledge sharing, which seems to reflect presumption behavior.
Research limitations/implications
– This study provides partial evidence of customer engagement and presumption in IKEA’s tweets. The results indicate that there are three forms of eWOM in the networks: objective statements, subjective statements, and knowledge sharing. It seems that IKEA successfully engaged customers in knowledge sharing, while negative opinions were mainly disseminated in a limited circle.
Practical implications
– Firms should make more of an effort to identify prosumers via data mining, since these networks are hidden behind “self-proclaimed” followers. Prosumers differ from opinion leaders, since they actively participate in product development. Thus, firms should seek prosumers in order to more closely fit their products to consumer needs. As a practical strategy, firms could employ celebrities for promotional purposes and use them as a platform to convert their followers to prosumers. In addition, firms are encouraged to make public how they resolve problematic customer complaints so that customers can feel they are a part of firms’ service development.
Originality/value
– Theoretically, the study makes unique contributions by offering a synergic framework of S-D logic and Web 2.0. The conceptual framework collectively relates customer engagement, presumption, and Web 2.0 to social networks. In addition, the idea of examining social networks based on different forms of eWOM has seldom been touched in the literature. Methodologically, the study employed seven algorithms to choose the most robust model, which was later applied to 4,000 tweets.
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures that arise from abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Voltage-gated sodium channels (NaVs), responsible for the initiation ...and propagation of action potentials in neurons, play a critical role in the pathogenesis of epilepsy. This study sought to discover potential anticonvulsant compounds that interact with NaVs, specifically, the brain subtype hNaV1.2. A ligand-based QSAR model and a docking model were constructed, validated, and applied in a parallel virtual screening over the DrugBank database. Montelukast, Novobiocin, and Cinnarizine were selected for in vitro testing, using the patch-clamp technique, and all of them proved to inhibit hNaV1.2 channels heterologously expressed in HEK293 cells. Two hits were evaluated in the GASH/Sal model of audiogenic seizures and demonstrated promising activity, reducing the severity of sound-induced seizures at the doses tested. The combination of ligand- and structure-based models presents a valuable approach for identifying potential NaV inhibitors. These findings may provide a basis for further research into the development of new antiseizure drugs for the treatment of epilepsy.
Amoebiasis caused by Entamoeba histolytica is associated with high morbidity and mortality is becoming a major public health problem worldwide, especially in developing countries. Because of the ...side-effects and the resistance that pathogenic protozoa build against the standard antiparasitic drugs, e.g., metronidazole, much recent attention has been paid to plants used in traditional medicine around the world in order to find new antiprotozoal agents. We collected 32 plants used in Northeast Mexican traditional medicine and the methanolic extracts of these species were screened for antiprotozoal activity against E. histolytica trophozoites using in vitro tests. Only 18 extracts showed a significant inhibiting activity and among them six plant extracts showed more than 80% growth inhibition against E. histolytica at a concentration of 150 µg/mL and the IC50 values of these extracts were determined. Lippia graveolens Kunth and Ruta chalepensis Pers. showed the more significant antiprotozoal activity (91.54% and 90.50% growth inhibition at a concentration of 150 µg/mL with IC50 values of 59.14 and 60.07 µg/mL, respectively). Bioassay-guided fractionation of the methanolic extracts from these two plants afforded carvacrol (1) and chalepensin (2), respectively, as bioactive compounds with antiprotozoal activity.

F has a half-life of 109.7 min and decays into stable
O via β+ ...emission with a probability of over 96% and a maximum positron energy of 0.633 MeV. Other commercially available PET radioisotopes, such as
Rb and
Ga have more complex decay schemes with a variety of prompt gammas, which can directly fall into the energy window and induce false coincidence detections by the PET scanner.

Simulated sensitivity and NECR tests performed with the GATE-model for different radioisotopes were in line with literature values. Simulated sensitivities for
F and
Ga were 21.2 and 19.0/kBq, respectively, for the center position and 21.1 and 19.0 cps/kBq, respectively, for the 10 cm off-center position compared to the corresponding measured values of 21.8 and 20.0 cps/kBq for the center position and 21.1 and 19.6 cps/kBq for the 10 cm off-center position. In terms of NECR, the simulated peak NECR was 216.8 kcps at 17.40 kBq/ml for
F and 207.1 kcps at 20.10 kBq/ml for
Ga compared to the measured peak NECR of 216.8 kcps at 18.60 kBq/ml and 205.6 kcps at 20.40 kBq/ml for
F and
Ga, respectively. For
C,
N, and
O, results confirmed a peak NECR similar to
F with the effective activity concentration scaled by the inverse of the positron fraction. For
Rb, and
Ga, the peak NECR was lower than for
F while the corresponding activity concentrations were higher. For the higher energy positron emitters, the positron range was confirmed to be tissue-dependent with a reduction of the positron range by a factor of 3 to 4 in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field and an increased positron range along the direction of the magnetic field.
Monte-Carlo simulations were used to predict sensitivity and NECR performance of GE Signa PET/MR for
F,
O,
N,
C,
Rb, and
Ga radioisotopes and were in line with literature data. Simulations confirmed that sensitivity and NECR were influenced by the particular decay scheme of each isotope. As expected, the positron range decreased in the direction perpendicular to the 3T magnetic field. However, this will be only partially improving the resolution properties of a clinical PET/MR system due to the limiting spatial resolution of the PET detector.
Rodent models of audiogenic seizures, in which seizures are precipitated by an abnormal response of the brain to auditory stimuli, are crucial to investigate the neural bases underlying ictogenesis. ...Despite significant advances in understanding seizure generation in the inferior colliculus, namely the epileptogenic nucleus, little is known about the contribution of lower auditory stations to the seizure-prone network. Here, we examined the cochlea and cochlear nucleus of the genetic audiogenic seizure hamster from Salamanca (GASH/Sal), a model of reflex epilepsy that exhibits generalized tonic–clonic seizures in response to loud sound. GASH/Sal animals under seizure-free conditions were compared with matched control hamsters in a multi-technical approach that includes auditory brainstem responses (ABR) testing, histology, scanning electron microscopy analysis, immunohistochemistry, quantitative morphometry and gene expression analysis (RT-qPCR). The cochlear histopathology of the GASH/Sal showed preservation of the sensory hair cells, but a significant loss of spiral ganglion neurons and mild atrophy of the stria vascularis. At the electron microscopy level, the reticular lamina exhibited disarray of stereociliary tufts with blebs, loss or elongated stereocilia as well as non-parallel rows of outer hair cells due to protrusions of Deiters’ cells. At the molecular level, the abnormal gene expression patterns of prestin, cadherin 23, protocadherin 15, vesicular glutamate transporters 1 (Vglut1) and -2 (Vglut2) indicated that the hair-cell mechanotransduction and cochlear amplification were markedly altered. These were manifestations of a cochlear neuropathy that correlated to ABR waveform I alterations and elevated auditory thresholds. In the cochlear nucleus, the distribution of VGLUT2-immunolabeled puncta was differently affected in each subdivision, showing significant increases in magnocellular regions of the ventral cochlear nucleus and drastic reductions in the granule cell domain. This modified inputs lead to disruption of Vglut1 and Vglut2 gene expression in the cochlear nucleus. In sum, our study provides insight into the morphological and molecular traits associated with audiogenic seizure susceptibility in the GASH/Sal, suggesting an upward spread of abnormal glutamatergic transmission throughout the primary acoustic pathway to the epileptogenic region.

A design technique to include multiple and fully‐controlled transmission zeros (TZs) in the frequency response of rectangular waveguide commensurate‐line stepped‐impedance filters is presented in ...this letter. These bandpass filters (BPFs) are known for having reduced sensitivities against manufacturing inaccuracies and are composed of multiple waveguide sections. In order to improve their selectivity, 3λg/4 and λg/4‐stubs are included to create multiple TZs around the passband. The proposed technique allows us to add multiple stubs in a single section and, therefore, only minor adjustments in the affected part of the filter are required, which simplifies the overall design process. The technique has been verified with a design example with four TZs (two on each side) near the passband.
