The inflammatory hypothesis of schizophrenia (SZ) posits that inflammatory processes and neural-immune interactions are involved in its pathogenesis, and may underpin some of its neurobiological ...correlates. SZ is the psychiatric disorder causing the most severe burden of illness, not just owing to its psychiatric impairment, but also owing to its significant medical comorbidity. C-reactive protein (CRP) is a commonly used biomarker of systemic inflammation worldwide. There are some conflicting results regarding the behaviour of CRP in SZ. The aims of this study were to verify whether peripheral CRP levels are indeed increased in SZ, whether different classes of antipsychotics divergently modulate CRP levels and whether its levels are correlated with positive and negative symptomatology. With that in mind, we performed a meta-analysis of all cross-sectional studies of serum and plasma CRP levels in SZ compared to healthy subjects. In addition, we evaluated longitudinal studies on CRP levels before and after antipsychotic use. Our meta-analyses of CRP in SZ included a total of 26 cross-sectional or longitudinal studies comprising 85 000 participants. CRP levels were moderately increased in persons with SZ regardless of the use of antipsychotics and did not change between the first episode of psychosis and with progression of SZ (g=0.66, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 0.43 to 0.88, P<0.001, 24 between-group comparisons, n=82 962). The extent of the increase in peripheral CRP levels paralleled the increase in severity of positive symptoms, but was unrelated to the severity of negative symptoms. CRP levels were also aligned with an increased body mass index. Conversely, higher age correlated with a smaller difference in CRP levels between persons with SZ and controls. Furthermore, CRP levels did not increase after initiation of antipsychotic medication notwithstanding whether these were typical or atypical antipsychotics (g=0.01, 95% CI -0.20 to 0.22, P=0.803, 8 within-group comparisons, n=713). In summary, our study provides further evidence of the inflammatory hypothesis of SZ. Whether there is a causal relationship between higher CRP levels and the development of SZ and aggravation of psychotic symptoms, or whether they are solely a marker of systemic low-grade inflammation in SZ, remains to be clarified.
We describe the operation of, and demonstrate logic functionality in, networks of physically coupled, nanometer-scale magnets designed for digital computation in magnetic quantum-dot cellular ...automata (MQCA) systems. MQCA offer low power dissipation and high integration density of functional elements and operate at room temperature. The basic MQCA logic gate, that is, the three-input majority logic gate, is demonstrated.
In order to understand how the brain generates behaviors, it is important to be able to determine how neural circuits work together to perform computations. Because neural circuits are made of a ...great diversity of cell types, it is critical to be able to analyze how these different kinds of cell work together. In recent years, a toolbox of fully genetically encoded molecules has emerged that, when expressed in specific neurons, enables the electrical activity of the targeted neurons to be controlled in a temporally precise fashion by pulses of light. We describe this optogenetic toolbox, how it can be used to analyze neural circuits in the brain and how optogenetics is impacting the study of cognition.
In this work, we present the first cosmology results from large-scale structure using the full 5000 deg2 of imaging data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Data Release 1. We perform an analysis of ...large-scale structure combining three two-point correlation functions ( 3×2pt ): (i) cosmic shear using 100 million source galaxies, (ii) galaxy clustering, and (iii) the cross-correlation of source galaxy shear with lens galaxy positions, galaxy–galaxy lensing. To achieve the cosmological precision enabled by these measurements has required updates to nearly every part of the analysis from DES Year 1, including the use of two independent galaxy clustering samples, modeling advances, and several novel improvements in the calibration of gravitational shear and photometric redshift inference. The analysis was performed under strict conditions to mitigate confirmation or observer bias; we describe specific changes made to the lens galaxy sample following unblinding of the results and tests of the robustness of our results to this decision. We model the data within the flat Λ CDM and wCDM cosmological models, marginalizing over 25 nuisance parameters. We find consistent cosmological results between the three two-point correlation functions; their combination yields clustering amplitude S8=0.776-0.017+0.017 and matter density Ω m =0.339-0.031+0.032 in Λ CDM , mean with 68% confidence limits; S8=0.775-0.024+0.026 , Ω m =0.352-0.041+0.035 , and dark energy equation-of-state parameter w=-0.98-0.20+0.32 in wCDM . These constraints correspond to an improvement in signal-to-noise of the DES Year 3 3×2pt data relative to DES Year 1 by a factor of 2.1, about 20% more than expected from the increase in observing area alone. This combination of DES data is consistent with the prediction of the model favored by the Planck 2018 cosmic microwave background (CMB) primary anisotropy data, which is quantified with a probability-to-exceed p=0.13 –0.48. We find better agreement between DES 3×2pt and Planck than in DES Y1, despite the significantly improved precision of both. When combining DES 3×2pt data with available baryon acoustic oscillation, redshift-space distortion, and type Ia supernovae data, we find p=0.34 . Combining all of these datasets with Planck CMB lensing yields joint parameter constraints of S8=0.812-0.008+0.008 , Ω m =0.306-0.005+0.004 , h=0.680-0.003+0.004 , and Σmν<0.13 eV (95% C.L.) in Λ CDM ; S8=0.812-0.008+0.008 , Ω m =0.302-0.006+0.006 , h=0.687-0.007+0.006 , and w=-1.031-0.027+0.030 in wCDM .
This work and its companion paper, Amon et al. Phys. Rev. D 105, 023514 (2022), present cosmic shear measurements and cosmological constraints from over 100 million source galaxies in the Dark Energy ...Survey (DES) Year 3 data. We constrain the lensing amplitude parameter S8≡σ8 Ω m / 0.3 at the 3% level in Λ CDM : S8=0.759-0.023+0.025 (68% CL). Our constraint is at the 2% level when using angular scale cuts that are optimized for the Λ CDM analysis: S8=0.772-0.017+0.018 (68% CL). With cosmic shear alone, we find no statistically significant constraint on the dark energy equation-of-state parameter at our present statistical power. We carry out our analysis blind, and compare our measurement with constraints from two other contemporary weak lensing experiments: the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) and Hyper-Suprime Camera Subaru Strategic Program (HSC). We additionally quantify the agreement between our data and external constraints from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Our DES Y3 result under the assumption of Λ CDM is found to be in statistical agreement with Planck 2018, although favors a lower S8 than the CMB-inferred value by 2.3σ (a p -value of 0.02). This paper explores the robustness of these cosmic shear results to modeling of intrinsic alignments, the matter power spectrum and baryonic physics. We additionally explore the statistical preference of our data for intrinsic alignment models of different complexity. The fiducial cosmic shear model is tested using synthetic data, and we report no biases greater than 0.3σ in the plane of S8× Ω m caused by uncertainties in the theoretical models.
We describe a practical measurement of the curvature of the universe which, unlike current constraints, relies purely on the properties of the Robertson-Walker metric rather than any assumed model ...for the dynamics and content of the universe. The observable quantity is the cross-correlation between foreground mass and gravitational shear of background galaxies, which depends on the angular diameter distances d sub(A)(z sub(l)), d sub(A)(z sub(s)) and d sub(A)(z sub(s),z sub(l)) on the degenerate triangle formed by observer, source, and lens. In a flat universe, d sub(A)(z sub(l),z sub(s)) = d sub(A)(z sub(s))-d sub(A)(z sub(l)), but in curved universes an additional term 8 sub(k) appears and alters the lensing observables even if d sub(A)(z) is fixed. We describe a method whereby weak-lensing data can be used to solve simultaneously for d sub(A) and the curvature. This method is completely insensitive to the equation of state of the contents of the universe, or amendments to general relativity that alter the gravitational deflection of light or the growth of structure. The curvature estimate is also independent of biases in the photometric redshift scale. This measurement is shown to be subject to a degeneracy among d sub(A), sub(k), and the galaxy bias factors that may be broken by using the same imaging data to measure the angular scale of baryon acoustic oscillations. Simplified estimates of the accuracy attainable by this method indicate that ambitious weak-lensing + baryon-oscillation surveys would measure sub(k) to an accuracy -0.04f super(-) sub(s) super(1) sub(k) super(/) sub(y) super(2) (s sub(ln z)/0.04) super(1/2), where s sub(ln z) is the photometric redshift error. The Fisher-matrix formalism developed here is also useful for predicting bounds on curvature and other characteristics of parametric dark energy models. We forecast some representative error levels and compare ours to other analyses of the weak-lensing cross-correlation method. We find both curvature and parametric constraints to be surprisingly insensitive to the systematic shear calibration errors.

Hubble Space Telescope observations from 2015 December 11 detected the expected fifth counter-image of supernova (SN) Refsdal at z = 1.49. In this Letter, we compare the time-delay predictions from ...numerous models with the measured value derived by Kelly et al. from very early data in the light curve of the SN Refsdal and find a best value for (68% CL), in excellent agreement with predictions from cosmic microwave background and recent weak lensing data + baryon acoustic oscillations + Big Bang nucleosynthesis (from the DES Collaboration). This is the first constraint on H0 derived from time delays between multiple-lensed SN images, and the first with a galaxy cluster lens, subject to systematic effects different from other time-delay H0 estimates. Additional time-delay measurements from new multiply imaged SNe will allow derivation of competitive constraints on H0.
The habenular complex is composed of important relay nuclei linking the limbic forebrain to the midbrain and brain stem nuclei. Based on clinical observations, experiments with animals and ...theoretical considerations, it has been speculated that this brain area might be involved in psychiatric diseases (i.e. schizophrenia and depression). However, evidence in favour of this hypothesis is still lacking because the human habenular complex has rarely been studied with regard to mental illness.
We examined habenular volumes in post-mortem brains of 17 schizophrenia patients, 14 patients with depression (six patients with major depression and eight patients with bipolar depression) and 13 matched controls. We further determined the neuronal density, cell number and cell area of the medial habenular nuclei of the same cohorts using a counting box and a computer-assisted instrument.
Significantly reduced habenular volumes of the medial and lateral habenula were estimated in depressive patients in comparison to normal controls and schizophrenia patients. We also found a reduction in neuronal cell number and cell area in depressive patients for the right side compared to controls and schizophrenia patients. No such changes were seen in schizophrenia.
Our anatomical data argue against prominent structural alterations of the habenular nuclei in schizophrenia but demonstrate robust alterations in depressive patients. We are currently applying immunohistochemical markers to better characterize neuronal subpopulations of this brain region in schizophrenia and depression.
