The Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV extended Baryonic Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (SDSS-IV/eBOSS) will observe 195 000 emission-line galaxies (ELGs) to measure the baryonic acoustic oscillation ...(BAO) standard ruler at redshift 0.9. To test different ELG selection algorithms, 9000 spectra were observed with the SDSS spectrograph as a pilot survey based on data from several imaging surveys. First, using visual inspection and redshift quality flags, we show that the automated spectroscopic redshifts assigned by the pipeline meet the quality requirements for a reliable BAO measurement. We also show the correlations between sky emission, signal-to-noise ratio in the emission lines, and redshift error. Then we provide a detailed description of each target selection algorithm we tested and compare them with the requirements of the eBOSS experiment. As a result, we provide reliable redshift distributions for the different target selection schemes we tested. Finally, we determine an target selection algorithms that is best suited to be applied on DECam photometry because they fulfill the eBOSS survey efficiency requirements.
We present calibrations of the redshift distributions of redMaGiC galaxies in the Dark Energy Survey Year 1 (DES Y1) and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR8 data. These results determine the priors ...of the redshift distribution of redMaGiC galaxies, which were used for galaxy clustering measurements and as lenses for galaxy–galaxy lensing measurements in DES Y1 cosmological analyses. We empirically determine the bias in redMaGiC photometric redshift estimates using angular cross-correlations with Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) galaxies. For DES, we calibrate a single-parameter redshift bias in three photometric redshift bins: z ε 0.15, 0.3, 0.3,0.45, and 0.45,0.6. Our best-fit results in each bin give photometric redshift biases of |Δz| < 0.01. To further test the redMaGiC algorithm, we apply our calibration procedure to SDSS redMaGiC galaxies, where the statistical precision of the cross-correlation measurement is much higher due to a greater overlap with BOSS galaxies. For SDSS, we also find best-fit results of |Δz| < 0.01. We compare our results to other analyses of redMaGiC photometric redshifts.
We use cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature maps from the 500 deg2 SPTpol survey to measure the stacked lensing convergence of galaxy clusters from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year-3 ...redMaPPer (RM) cluster catalog. The lensing signal is extracted through a modified quadratic estimator designed to be unbiased by the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect. The modified estimator uses a tSZ-free map, constructed from the SPTpol 95 and 150 GHz data sets, to estimate the background CMB gradient. For lensing reconstruction, we employ two versions of the RM catalog: a flux-limited sample containing 4003 clusters and a volume-limited sample with 1741 clusters. We detect lensing at a significance of 8.7 (6.7 ) with the flux (volume)-limited sample. By modeling the reconstructed convergence using the Navarro-Frenk-White profile, we find the average lensing masses to be and for the volume- and flux-limited samples, respectively. The systematic error budget is much smaller than the statistical uncertainty and is dominated by the uncertainties in the RM cluster centroids. We use the volume-limited sample to calibrate the normalization of the mass-richness scaling relation, and find a result consistent with the galaxy weak-lensing measurements from DES.
ABSTRACT
We present the first Hubble diagram of superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) out to a redshift of two, together with constraints on the matter density, ΩM, and the dark energy equation-of-state ...parameter, w(≡p/ρ). We build a sample of 20 cosmologically useful SLSNe I based on light curve and spectroscopy quality cuts. We confirm the robustness of the peak–decline SLSN I standardization relation with a larger data set and improved fitting techniques than previous works. We then solve the SLSN model based on the above standardization via minimization of the χ2 computed from a covariance matrix that includes statistical and systematic uncertainties. For a spatially flat Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmological model, we find $\Omega _{\rm M}=0.38^{+0.24}_{-0.19}$, with an rms of 0.27 mag for the residuals of the distance moduli. For a w0waCDM cosmological model, the addition of SLSNe I to a ‘baseline’ measurement consisting of Planck temperature together with Type Ia supernovae, results in a small improvement in the constraints of w0 and wa of 4 per cent. We present simulations of future surveys with 868 and 492 SLSNe I (depending on the configuration used) and show that such a sample can deliver cosmological constraints in a flat ΛCDM model with the same precision (considering only statistical uncertainties) as current surveys that use Type Ia supernovae, while providing a factor of 2–3 improvement in the precision of the constraints on the time variation of dark energy, w0 and wa. This paper represents the proof of concept for superluminous supernova cosmology, and demonstrates they can provide an independent test of cosmology in the high-redshift (z > 1) universe.
Chromosome translocation is a major genomic event for a cell, affecting almost every of its life aspects ranging from metabolism, organelle maintenance and homeostasis to gene maintenance and ...expression. By using the bridge-induced translocation system, we defined the effects of induced chromosome translocation on the chronological life span (CLS) of yeast with particular interest to the oxidative stress condition. The results demonstrate that every translocant strain has a different CLS, but all have a high increase in reactive oxygen species and in lipid peroxides levels at the end of the life span. This could be due to the very unique and strong deregulation of the oxidative stress network. Furthermore, the loss of the translocated chromosome occurs at the end of the life span and is locus dependent. Additionally, the RDH54 gene may play a role in the correct segregation of the translocant chromosome, since in its absence there is an increase in loss of the bridge-induced translocated chromosome.

Weak lensing source galaxy catalogues used in estimating the masses of galaxy clusters can be heavily contaminated by cluster members, prohibiting accurate mass calibration. In this study, ...we test the performance of an estimator for the extent of cluster member contamination based on decomposing the photometric redshift P(z) of source galaxies into contaminating and background components. We perform a full scale mock analysis on a simulated sky survey approximately mirroring the observational properties of the Dark Energy Survey Year One observations (DES Y1), and find excellent agreement between the true number profile of contaminating cluster member galaxies in the simulation and the estimated one. We further apply the method to estimate the cluster member contamination for the DES Y1 redMaPPer cluster mass calibration analysis, and compare the results to an alternative approach based on the angular correlation of weak lensing source galaxies. We find indications that the correlation based estimates are biased by the selection of the weak lensing sources in the cluster vicinity, which does not strongly impact the P(z) decomposition method. Collectively, these benchmarks demonstrate the strength of the P(z) decomposition method in alleviating membership contamination and enabling highly accurate cluster weak lensing studies without broad exclusion of source galaxies, thereby improving the total constraining power of cluster mass calibration via weak lensing.
The electric signal induced by an ultrasonic wave in aqueous solutions of charged species is measured and analyzed. A device is developed which measures the raw induced electric signal for small ...sample volumes (few milliliters) and without any preceding calibration. The potential difference generated between two identical electrodes, called the ionic vibration potential (IVP), is thus easily deduced. In parallel, a theory for the IVP is built based on a robust analytical theory already used successfully to account for other transport coefficients in electrolyte solutions. From the analysis of the IVP measured for several aqueous electrolyte solutions, which are well-defined model systems for this technique, we explain and validate the different contributions to the signal. In particular, the non-ideal effects at high concentrations are thoroughly understood. A first step towards colloidal systems is presented by the analysis of the signal in solutions of a polyoxometallate salt, opening the possibility of determinations of reliable electrophoretic mobilities in dispersions of nanoobjects.

In craniofacial reconstruction, the gold standard procedure for bone regeneration is the autologous bone graft (BG). However, this procedure requiring bone harvesting is a source of ...morbidity. Bone substitutes, such as biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP), represent an interesting alternative but are not sufficient for bone healing in hypoplastic conditions. In such conditions, osteoprogenitors are essential to provide osteoinduction. Previous studies have shown that BCP associated with total bone marrow (TBM) provides same bone reconstruction as bone graft in a rat model of calvaria defect. Furthermore, adipose tissue stromal vascular fraction (SVF) seems to be another promising source of osteoprogenitor cells that can be used intra-operatively. This study aimed to combine, intra-operative BCP-based bone tissue engineering strategies with TBM or SVF from human sources.
5 mm critical-size calvaria defects were performed in 18 nude rat. The defects were filled with intra-operative bone tissue engineering procedures: human BG, human TBM + BCP, human SVF + BCP and, rat TBM + BCP. Animals were sacrificed 8 weeks after implantation and calvaria were processed for histological and radiological examinations. Implanted cells were labelled with a fluorochrome.
Micro-CT analysis revealed partial repair of bone defect. Only hBG significantly succeeded in healing the defect (43.1%). However, low rate of newly formed bone tissue was observed in all tissue engineering conditions (hTBM, hSVF, ratTBM).
The lack of bone formation observed in this study could possibly be attributed to the model.
This study combined with a literature analysis show the stringency of the nude rat calvaria model in term of bone regeneration.
This paper describes the CFH12K-VIRMOS survey: a deep BVRI imaging survey in four fields totalling more than 17 deg super(2), conducted with the 40 x 30 arcmin super(2) field CFH-12K camera. The ...survey is intended to be a multi-purpose survey used for a variety of science goals, including surveys of very high redshift galaxies and weak lensing studies. Four high galactic latitude fields, each 2 x 2 deg super(2), have been selected along the celestial equator: 0226-04, 1003+01, 1400+05, and 2217+00. The 16 deg super(2) of the "wide" survey are covered with exposure times of 2 hr, 1.5 hr, 1 hr, 1 hr, respectively while the 1.3 x 1 deg super(2) area of the "deep" survey at the center of the 0226-04 field is covered with exposure times of 7 h, 4.5 h, 3 h, 3 h, in BVRI respectively. An additional area similar to 2 deg super(2) has been imaged in the 0226-04 field corresponding to the area surveyed by the XMM-LSS program. The data is pipeline processed at the Terapix facility at the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris to produce large mosaic images. The catalogs produced contain the positions, shapes, total and aperture magnitudes for 2.175 million objects measured in the four areas. The limiting magnitudes, measured as a 5 sigma measurement in a 3 arcsec diameter aperture is I sub(AB) = 24.8 in the "Wide" areas, and I sub(AB) = 25.3 in the deep area. Careful quality control has been applied on the data to ensure internal consistency and assess the photometric and astrometric accuracy as described in a joint paper. These catalogs are used to select targets for the VIRMOS-VLT Deep Survey, a large spectroscopic survey of the distant universe. First results from the CFH12K-VIRMOS survey have been published on weak lensing. Catalogs and images are available through the VIRMOS database environment under Oracle (http://www.oamp.fr/cencos). They are open for general use since July 1st, 2003.
