bstract
We test a proposed mirror map at the level of correlators for linear models describing the (0,2) moduli space of superconformal field theories with a (2,2) locus associated to Calabi-Yau ...hypersurfaces in toric varieties. We verify in non-trivial examples that the correlators are exchanged by the mirror map and we derive a correspondence between the observables of the A/2- and B/2-twisted theories. We also comment on the global structure of the (0,2) moduli space and present a simple non-renormalization argument for a large class of B/2 model subfamilies.

bstract
We introduce a class of (0,2) superconformal field theories based on hybrid geometries, generalizing various known constructions. We develop techniques for the computation of the complete ...massless spectrum when the theory can be interpreted as determining a perturbative heterotic string compactification. We provide evidence for surprising properties regarding RG flows and IR accidental symmetries in (0,2) hybrid CFTs. We also study the conditions for embedding a hybrid theory in a particular class of gauged linear sigma models. This perspective suggests that our construction generates models which cannot be realized or analyzed by previously known methods.

bstract
We discuss renormalization group flows in two-dimensional quantum field theories with (0,2) supersymmetry. We focus on theories with UV described by a Landau-Ginzburg Lagrangian and use the ...chiral algebra to constrain the IR dynamics. We present examples where the structure of the chiral algebra is incompatible with unitarity of the IR superconformal theory and discuss the implications of this result for programs of classifying (0,2) SCFTs as endpoints of flows from simple Lagrangian theories.
Detection of small peripheral lung nodules is constantly increasing with the development of low dose computed tomography lung cancer screening programs. A tissue diagnosis is often required to ...confirm malignity, with endobronchial biopsies being associated with a lower pneumothorax rate than percutaneous approaches. Endoscopic diagnosis of peripheral small size lung nodules is however often challenging using traditional bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound alone. New virtual bronchoscopic navigation techniques such as electromagnetic navigational bronchoscopy (ENB) have developed to improve peripheral navigation, with diagnostic yield however remaining in the 30-50% range for small lesions. Recent studies have shown the benefits of combining Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) with ENB to improve diagnostic yield to up to 83%. The use of ENB however remains limited by disposable cost, bronchus sign dependency and inaccuracies due to CT to body divergence.
This case report highlights the feasibility and usefulness of CBCT-guided bronchoscopy for the sampling of lung nodules difficult to reach through traditional bronchoscopy because of nodule size and peripheral position. Procedure was scheduled in a mobile robotic hybrid operating room with patient under general anaesthesia. CBCT acquisition was performed to localize the target lesion and plan the best path to reach it into bronchial tree. A dedicated software was used to segment the lesion and the bronchial path which 3D outlines were automatically fused in real time on the fluoroscopic images to augment live guidance. Navigation to the lesion was guided with bronchoscopy and augmented fluoroscopy alone. Before the sampling, CBCT imaging was repeated to confirm the proper position of the instrument into the lesion. Four transbronchial needle aspirations (TBNA) were performed and the tissue analysis showed a primary lung adenocarcinoma.
CBCT and augmented fluoroscopy technique is a safe and effective and has potential to improve early stage peripheral lesions endobronchial diagnostic yield without ENB. Additional studies are warranted to confirm its safety, efficacy and technical benefits, both for diagnosis of oncological and non-oncological disease and for endobronchial treatment of inoperable patients.
Purpose:
A characterization of a clinical unit for digital radiography (FUJIFILM FDR D-EVO) is presented. This system is based on the irradiation side sampling (ISS) technology and can be equipped ...with two different scintillators: one traditional gadolinium-oxysulphide phosphor (GOS) and a needle structured cesium iodide (CsI) phosphor panel.
Methods:
The characterization was achieved in terms of response curve, modulation transfer function (MTF), noise power spectra (NPS), detective quantum efficiency (DQE), and psychophysical parameters (contrast-detail analysis with an automatic reading of CDRAD images). For both scintillation screens the authors accomplished the measurements with four standard beam conditions: RAQ3, RQA5, RQA7, and RQA9.
Results:
At the Nyquist frequency (3.33 lp/mm) the MTF is about 35% and 25% for CsI and GOS detectors, respectively. The CsI scintillator has better noise properties than the GOS screen in almost all the conditions. This is particularly true for low-energy beams, where the noise for the GOS system can go up to a factor 2 greater than that found for CsI. The DQE of the CsI detector reaches a peak of 60%, 60%, 58%, and 50% for the RQA3, RQA5, RQA7, and RQA9 beams, respectively, whereas for the GOS screen the maximum DQE is 40%, 44%, 44%, and 35%. The contrast-detail analysis confirms that in the majority of cases the CsI scintillator is able to provide improved outcomes to those obtained with the GOS screen.
Conclusions:
The limited diffusion of light produced by the ISS reading makes possible the achievement of very good spatial resolution. In fact, the MTF of the unit with the CsI panel is only slightly lower to that achieved with direct conversion detectors. The combination of very good spatial resolution, together with the good noise properties reached with the CsI screen, allows achieving DQE on average about 1.5 times greater than that obtained with GOS. In fact, the DQE of unit equipped with CsI is comparable to the best alternative methods available which are based on the same technology, and similar to others based on an a-Se direct conversion detectors.
The current framework of radiological protection of occupational exposed medical workers reduced the eye-lens equivalent dose limit from 150 to 20 mSv per year requiring an accurate dosimetric ...evaluation and an increase understanding of radiation induced effects on Lens cells considering the typical scenario of occupational exposed medical operators. Indeed, it is widely accepted that genomic damage of Lens epithelial cells (LEC) is a key mechanism of cataractogenesis. However, the relationship between apoptosis and cataractogenesis is still controversial. In this study biological and physical data are combined to improve the understanding of radiation induced effects on LEC. To characterize the occupational exposure of medical workers during angiographic procedures an INNOVA 4100 (General Electric Healthcare) equipment was used (scenario A). Additional experiments were conducted using a research tube (scenario B). For both scenarios, the frequencies of binucleated cells, micronuclei, p21-positive cells were assessed with different doses and dose rates. A Monte-Carlo study was conducted using a model for the photon generation with the X-ray tubes and with the Petri dishes considering the two different scenarios (A and B) to reproduce the experimental conditions and validate the irradiation setups to the cells. The simulation results have been tallied using the Monte Carlo code MCNP6. The spectral characteristics of the different X-ray beams have been estimated. All irradiated samples showed frequencies of micronuclei and p21-positive cells higher than the unirradiated controls. Differences in frequencies increased with the delivered dose measured with Gafchromic films XR-RV3. The spectrum incident on eye lens and Petri, as estimated with MCNP6, was in good agreement in the scenario A (confirming the experimental setup), while the mean energy spectrum was higher in the scenario B. Nevertheless, the response of LEC seemed mainly related to the measured absorbed dose. No effects on viability were detected. Our results support the hypothesis that apoptosis is not responsible for cataract induced by low doses of X-ray (i.e. 25 mGy) while the induction of transient p21 may interfere with the disassembly of the nuclear envelop in differentiating LEC, leading to cataract formation. Further studies are needed to better clarify the relationship we suggested between DNA damage, transient p21 induction and the inability of LEC enucleation.
The purpose of this multi-centric work was to investigate the relationship between radiomic features extracted from pre-treatment computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, ...and clinical outcomes for stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) in early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). One-hundred and seventeen patients who received SBRT for early-stage NSCLC were retrospectively identified from seven Italian centers. The tumor was identified on pre-treatment free-breathing CT and PET images, from which we extracted 3004 quantitative radiomic features. The primary outcome was 24-month progression-free-survival (PFS) based on cancer recurrence (local/non-local) following SBRT. A harmonization technique was proposed for CT features considering lesion and contralateral healthy lung tissues using the LASSO algorithm as a feature selector. Models with harmonized CT features (B models) demonstrated better performances compared to the ones using only original CT features (C models). A linear support vector machine (SVM) with harmonized CT and PET features (A1 model) showed an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.77 (0.63–0.85) for predicting the primary outcome in an external validation cohort. The addition of clinical features did not enhance the model performance. This study provided the basis for validating our novel CT data harmonization strategy, involving delta radiomics. The harmonized radiomic models demonstrated the capability to properly predict patient prognosis.
Aim: The aim of this study was to develop robust prognostic models for mortality prediction of COVID-19 patients, applicable to different sets of real scenarios, using radiomic and neural network ...features extracted from chest X-rays (CXRs) with a certified and commercially available software. Methods: 1816 patients from 5 different hospitals in the Province of Reggio Emilia were included in the study. Overall, 201 radiomic features and 16 neural network features were extracted from each COVID-19 patient’s radiography. The initial dataset was balanced to train the classifiers with the same number of dead and survived patients, randomly selected. The pipeline had three main parts: balancing procedure; three-step feature selection; and mortality prediction with radiomic features through three machine learning (ML) classification models: AdaBoost (ADA), Quadratic Discriminant Analysis (QDA) and Random Forest (RF). Five evaluation metrics were computed on the test samples. The performance for death prediction was validated on both a balanced dataset (Case 1) and an imbalanced dataset (Case 2). Results: accuracy (ACC), area under the ROC-curve (AUC) and sensitivity (SENS) for the best classifier were, respectively, 0.72 ± 0.01, 0.82 ± 0.02 and 0.84 ± 0.04 for Case 1 and 0.70 ± 0.04, 0.79 ± 0.03 and 0.76 ± 0.06 for Case 2. These results show that the prediction of COVID-19 mortality is robust in a different set of scenarios. Conclusions: Our large and varied dataset made it possible to train ML algorithms to predict COVID-19 mortality using radiomic and neural network features of CXRs.
Immunosuppressants are clinically approved drugs to treat the potential rejection of transplanted organs and require frequent monitoring due to their narrow therapeutic window. Immunophilins are ...small proteins that bind immunosuppressants with high affinity, yet there are no examples of fluorogenic immunophilins and their potential application as optical biosensors for immunosuppressive drugs in clinical biosamples. In the present work, we designed novel diazonium BODIPY salts for the site-specific labeling of tyrosine residues in peptides via solid-phase synthesis as well as for late-stage functionalization of whole recombinant proteins. After the optimization of a straightforward one-step labeling procedure for immunophilins PPIA and FKBP12, we demonstrated the application of a fluorogenic analogue of FKBP12 for the selective detection of the immunosuppressant drug tacrolimus, including experiments in urine samples from patients with functioning renal transplants. This chemical methodology opens new avenues to rationally design wash-free immunophilin-based biosensors for rapid therapeutic drug monitoring.
Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) allows the explore not only the anterior chamber but also the front part of the vitreous cavity. Our cross-sectional single-centre study ...investigated whether AS-OCT can distinguish between vitreous involvement due to vitreoretinal lymphoma (VRL) and vitritis in uveitis. We studied AS-OCT images from 28 patients (11 with biopsy-proven VRL and 17 with differential diagnosis uveitis) using publicly available radiomics software written in MATLAB. Patients were divided into two balanced groups: training and testing. Overall, 3260/3705 (88%) AS-OCT images met our defined quality criteria, making them eligible for analysis. We studied five different sets of grey-level samplings (16, 32, 64, 128, and 256 levels), finding that 128 grey levels performed the best. We selected the five most effective radiomic features ranked by the ability to predict the class (VRL or uveitis). We built a classification model using the xgboost python function; through our model, 87% of eyes were correctly diagnosed as VRL or uveitis, regardless of exam technique or lens status. Areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUC) in the 128 grey-level model were 0.95 CI 0.94, 0.96 and 0.84 for training and testing datasets, respectively. This preliminary retrospective study highlights how AS-OCT can support ophthalmologists when there is clinical suspicion of VRL.
