Genre theory in the past few years has contributed immensely to our understanding of the way discourse is used in academic, professional and institutional contexts. However, its development has been ...constrained by the nature and design of its applications, which have invariably focused on language teaching and learning, or communication training and consultation. This has led to the use of simplified and idealised genres. In contrast to this, the real world of discourse is complex, dynamic and unpredictable. This tension between the real world of written discourse and its representation in applied genre-based literature is the main theme of this book. The book addresses this theme from the perspectives of four rather different worlds: the world of reality, the world of private intentions, the world of analysis and the world of applications. Using examples from a range of situations including advertising, business, academia, economics, law, book introductions, reports, media and fundraising, Bhatia uses discourse analysis to move genre theory away from educational contexts and into the real world. There are multiple aspects of electronically-mediated communication that influence and have strong implications for legal practice. This book focuses on three major aspects of mediated communication ...through social media. Section 1 examines social media and the legal community. In recent versions of professional genre analysis, context has assumed increasingly critical importance, thus redefining genre as a configuration of text-internal and text-external factors. The ...emphasis on text-external properties of genre has brought into focus the notion of interdiscursivity as distinct from intertextuality, which is primarily viewed as appropriation of text-internal resources. Drawing evidence from a number of professional contexts, this article explores the nature, function, and use of interdiscursivity in genre theory, defining interdiscursivity as a function of appropriation of generic resources across discursive, professional and cultural practices, which, it is claimed, is central to our understanding of the complexities of genres that are typically employed in professional, disciplinary, and institutional communication.

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) discourses largely involve participants from different linguistic backgrounds in terms of their regional, economic, and sociocultural settings. Moreover, due to ...the globalisation of trade and commerce across international borders, professional practices invariably involve multiperspective interactions and negotiations across a range of participants interacting with speakers of English as a second or foreign language. However, although ESP targets speakers of languages other than English, it has often been driven by native speakers’ use of English in specific academic and professional contexts. Drawing on some of the key insights from critical genre theory, I would like to give more substance to this aspect of ESP and argue for a shift in the paradigm towards world Englishes for Specific Purposes (WESP).

Studies of professional genres and professional practices are invariably seen as complementing each other, in that they not only influence each other but are often co-constructed in specific ...professional contexts. However, professional genres have often been analyzed in isolation, leaving the study of professional practice almost completely out, except as providing context for specific analyses, thus undermining the role of interdiscursivity in professional genres and practices. Drawing examples from a range of professional contexts, in particular from business and international arbitration practice, this paper argues for a shift towards an integration of discursive and professional practices, thus emphasizing the function of interdiscursivity in critical genre analysis.
Superplastic deformation of polycrystalline materials is usually accommodated by diffusion-assisted grain boundary (GB) sliding at high temperatures. Lowering the temperature requirement for ...commercial superplastic forming enables green and cost-effective manufacturing. Recently, room-temperature (RT) superplasticity was realized in ultrafine-grained Al–Zn based alloys, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here, we conducted in-situ tensile straining and post-mortem electron microscopy characterization, and atomistic density functional theory simulation to understand the RT superplasticity of an Al–15 Zn (at%) alloy. Results showed that the superplasticity is achieved by GB sliding and grain rotation, assisted by the continuous diffusion of Zn. In-situ observations showed Zn atoms diffusing from within grains to GBs, resulting in a Zn nanolayer at the GBs that acts as a solid lubricant to decrease the energy barrier of GB sliding. This research advances our understanding of diffusion-assisted deformation mechanism that is a prerequisite for the rational design of new materials with RT superplasticity.

Communication in international professional contexts, whether in spoken, written, or digital form, often involves participants from a variety of contexts in terms of variations in their use of ...language and cultural norms, discourse strategies, and expectations of participating members of specific professional communities, and as such, invariably reflects a multi‐norm rather than a mono‐norm native model of language use. However, very little attention has been paid either in world Englishes (WE) or discourse analytical studies to communication in professional practice, in particular with a focus on text‐external contextual factors. The major emphasis has so far been on the analysis of textualisation of discourse. Drawing on recent insights from critical genre analysis (Bhatia, 2017), I would like to argue that discursive data from professional practice provides additional support and convincing argument in favour of Kachru's (1985, p. 30) call for multi‐norm standards in international communication and for a need to consider ‘new paradigms and perspectives for linguistics and pedagogical research’ in national as well as international contexts.
