Blood is a fluid connective tissue of human body, where it plays vital functions for the nutrition, defense and well-being of the organism. When circulating in peripheral districts, it is exposed to ...some physical stresses coming from outside the human body, as electromagnetic fields (EMFs) which can cross the skin. Such fields may interact with biomolecules possibly inducing non thermal-mediated biological effects at the cellular level. In this study, the occurrence of biochemical/biological modifications in human peripheral blood lympho-monocytes exposed in a reverberation chamber for times ranging from 1 to 20 h to EMFs at 1.8 GHz frequency and 200 V/m electric field strength was investigated. Morphological analysis of adherent cells unveiled, in some of these, appearance of an enlarged and deformed shape after EMFs exposure. Raman spectra of the nuclear compartment of cells exposed to EMFs revealed the onset of biochemical modifications, mainly consisting in the reduction of the DNA backbone-linked vibrational modes. Respirometric measurements of mitochondrial activity in intact lympho-monocytes resulted in increase of the resting oxygen consumption rate after 20 h of exposure, which was coupled to a significant increase of the FoF1-ATP synthase-related oxygen consumption. Notably, at lower time-intervals of EMFs exposure (i.e. 5 and 12 h) a large increase of the proton leak-related respiration was observed which, however, recovered at control levels after 20 h exposure. Confocal microscopy analysis of the mitochondrial membrane potential supported the respiratory activities whereas no significant variations in the mitochondrial mass/morphology was observed in EMFs-exposed lympho-monocytes. Finally, altered redox homeostasis was shown in EMFs-exposed lympho-monocytes, which progressed differently in nucleated cellular subsets. This results suggest the occurrence of adaptive mechanisms put in action, likely via redox signaling, to compensate for early impairments of the oxidative phosphorylation system caused by exposure to EMFs. Overall the data presented warn for health safety of people involved in long-term exposure to electromagnetic fields, although further studies are required to pinpoint the leukocyte cellular subset(s) selectively targeted by the EMFs action and the mechanisms by which it is achieved.

The paper presents the results of a joint analysis of ground-based and satellite observations of very low-frequency and low-frequency (VLF/LF) signals during periods of strong seismic activity in the region of Kuril Islands and Japan in 2004–2010. Ground and satellite data was processed using a method based on the difference between the real signal in nighttime and that of a model. The results of the analysis show a good correlation between ground-based and satellite data for several cases of strong (M⩾6.8) earthquakes.
In June 2014, a number of meteotsunamis were detected in the Mediterranean and Black Sea area. These meteotsunamis were initiated by a unique high-altitude dynamical system which was initially ...originated above Spain and traveled across the Mediterranean Sea towards Black Sea and Turkey. Meteotsunamis unlike tsunamis driven by strong earthquakes are local events, and their formation has different mechanism. Atmospheric internal gravity waves (IGWs) are one of the main known sources of meteotsunamis (e.g. Vilibić et al. in Pure Appl Geophys 165:2169–2195, 2008). The synoptic system produced short-lived and small-scale atmospheric pressure perturbations which drifted with the jet stream-like bubbles and generated tsunami-like waves in the open waters. The bubbles with typical dimensions 15–60 km continuously form and collapse in the atmosphere at altitudes of 3–6 km. Such a “boiled” atmosphere generated IGWs propagating both downward, where they produced meteotsunamis (presumably under Proudman resonance condition) and upward into the ionosphere, with following dissipation and excitation of plasma density perturbations. One of the few experimental techniques, which can monitor perturbations of the ionization within the lower ionosphere, uses long-wave probing by very low and low frequency (VLF/LF) radio signals. To study the ionospheric disturbances observed during the chain of meteotsunamis affecting the Mediterranean Sea, we used VLF/LF data collected in South Europe by “The International Network for Frontier Research on Earthquake Precursors”. By applying the spectral analysis method to the anomalous VLF/LF signals, it was found that revealed periods of the signal variations were from 10 to 40–70 min in different stations, which are in the range of the atmospheric pressure oscillations and the meteotsunami events. These periods also correspond to the periods of IGWs.
A study of the structural, optical and electrical properties of synthetic and natural melanin by means of X-ray diffraction, absorption and photocurrent techniques is reported. The model of the ...natural melanin film as a network of nano-aggregates of polymeric units based on the indolic structure is proposed to explain the X-ray diffraction results. The shape of the absorption spectra is similar to that of amorphous and disordered semiconductors, with a very strong, broad band UV and visible absorption and an optical gap value of about 0.5 eV. Photosensitivity to sun spectra has been demonstrated by photoconductivity measurements of synthetic melanin pellets under AM1 light source illumination.
Signals of two Japanese transmitters (22.2 kHz and 40 kHz) recorded on the ground VLF/LF station in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and on board the DEMETER French satellite have been analyzed during a ...seismic activity in Japan in May-June 2008. The period of analysis was from 18 April to 27 June. During this time two rather large earthquakes occurred in the north part of Honshu Island - 7 May (M=6.8) and 13 June (M=6.9). The ground and satellite data were processed by a method based on the difference between the real signal in nighttime and the model one. For ground observations a clear decrease in both signals has been found several days before the first earthquake. For the second earthquake anomalies were detected only in JJI signal. The epicenters of earthquakes were in reliable reception zone of 40 kHz signal on board the DEMETER. Signal enhancement above the seismic active region and significant signal intensity depletion in the magnetically conjugate area has been found for satellite observation before the first earthquake. Anomalies in satellite data coincide in time with those in the ground-based observation.
The VLF/LF radio signals method for studying preseimic activity is applied to the Abruzzo earthquake (M=6.3, 6 April 2009). The data collected by three receivers located in Moscow (Russia), Graz ...(Austria) and Bari (Italy) at about 3000 km, 1000 km and 500 km from the epicenter were used. The signals received from the Sardinia (20.27 kHz) and the Sicily (45.9 kHz) transmitters, both located in Italy, were compared with those received from the Iceland (37.5 kHz), the Great Britain (19.58 kHz) and the Germany (23.4 kHz) transmitters. The propagation paths of the two Italian transmitters cross the epicentral area (seismic paths) unlike the paths of the other three signals (control paths). Using two different analyses, that are the study of the night-time signal and the research of shifts in the evening terminator times, clear anomalies were revealed 2–8 days before the occurrence of the Abruzzo earthquake in the seismic paths, while no anomalies have been found in the control paths.
Natural and synthetic melanin have been investigated by means of optical, electrical and photoelectronic measurements. Optical measurements evidence absorption curves which allow to estimate optical ...gap for synthetic melanin, by using Tauc’s method. Dark conductivity and photoconductivity measurements were performed as a function of temperature and for different duration of thermal treatments. It has been evidenced that both quantities are thermally activated and thermal treatments play a very important role as far as gap states are concerned.

The solar radiation affects the life on Earth and it is important in meteorology, climatology, solar energy, agriculture, hydrology and seismology, too. The Sun warms the earth which reflects a part ...of the energy. An effect of tectonic stress increases the ground temperature that is radiated into the atmosphere. We study the possibility to use the variation of reflected energy in correlation with seismicity, radon concentration, CO2 emission, ULF radio waves, telluric currents, air ionization, temperature in borehole and acoustic noise. In this case, the solar radiation is a precursor factor. This research is important to study the effects of climate change. Analyzing the solar energy budget we find information about the atmosphere: aerosols, ozone, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and pollution. Our multidisciplinary network (AeroSolSys) monitors Vrancea, a Romanian area characterized by deep earthquakes. For this study, we use two stations, Plostina and Vrancioaia, where we have a net radiometer and a pyranometer. The first sensor includes two pyranometers (up and low) and two pyrgeometers (up and low), a Pt-100 and a Thermistor. The spectral range covers both the Solar Radiation, 0.3 to 3 micrometers, and the Far Infrared Radiation, 4.5 to 42 micrometers. In this case, we measure and determine the temperature of sensor necessary for pyrgeometers, pyranometer short-wave radiation up and low EyU - EyL, pyrgeometers long-wave radiation up and low EgU - EgL, Albedo, net solar radiation NSR, net far infrared radiation NFIR, net total radiation NTR, sky temperature SkyT and, land surface temperature LST. In Vrancioaia, we have a pyranometer with range 0.3 - 2.8 micrometers and maxim 1600 W/m2. Two video cameras monitor the sky and the measurements are correlated with meteorological equipment installed in each location. We use information about solar activity from NOAA satellites and Copernicus CAMS. The humidity of ground is important in energy budget and it is estimated from meteorological data and telluric currents. The interval of analysis is 3 hours, between 2016.01.01 - 2018.05.31. It is difficult to notice the effect of tectonic stress since the daily and seasonal variations of solar radiation are high but global warming is obvious. Solar radiation monitoring helps us to understand other phenomena like radon emission or air ionization.
•VLF anomalies are found before the January 2014 Greece earthquake with a 4-day period.•Clear TEC disturbances are observed the day before the earthquake.•The joint analysis of VLF and TEC anomalies ...can be used as a seismic precursor.
The present work integrates ground-based ionosphere measurements using very-low-frequency radio transmissions with satellite measurements of the total electron content to draw common conclusions about the possible impact that the Mw6.1 earthquake that took place in Greece on January 26, 2014, had on the ionosphere.
Very-low-frequency radio signals reveal the existence of an ∼4-day anomaly in the wavelet spectra of the signals received inside the earthquake preparation zone and a significant increase in the normalized variance of the signals prior to the earthquake (approximately 1day before).
Through total electron content analysis, it was possible to identify a clear anomaly from 15:00 until 20:00UT on the day before the earthquake that appears again on the day of the earthquake between 07:00UT and 08:00UT. The anomalous values reach TEC∗Sigma ∼4.36 and 3.11, respectively. Their spatial and temporal distributions give grounds to assume a possible link with the earthquake preparation. The geomagnetic, solar and weather conditions during the considered period are presented and taken into account.
This work is an initial and original step towards a multi-parameter approach to the problem of the possible earthquake-related effects on the ionosphere joining observations made from both ground stations and satellites. A well-founded knowledge of these phenomena is clearly necessary before dealing with their application to earthquake prediction purposes.
