Acquired tamoxifen (TAM) resistance is supposed to be the major cause of hormone therapy failure in estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer patients. Toremifene (TOR), a chlorinated TAM-related ...compound, has been found to be more effective and less toxic than TAM. Moreover 4-hydroxy-toremifene (OH-TOR), like 4-hydroxy-tamoxifen (OH-TAM), is the most effective metabolite in human. To better understand the relative role of TAM, TOR, OH-TAM, and OH-TOR, singly or in combination, we studied their effect on MCF7, ZR-75.1, and T47D cell lines, which, despite their positive receptor status, have a different responsiveness to estradiol and antiestrogenic compounds. The results may be summarized as follows; in MCF7 cells, all compounds, singly or in association, showed an inhibitory effect; ZR75.1 cells were resistance to TAM and OH-TAM, but partially sensitive to TOR and OH-TOR; in T47D cells, all compounds displayed their estrogenic activity and induced cell growth. These result suggest the inefficacy of these triphenylethylene derivatives as a hormone treatment even when given in a simultaneous or sequential combination.
A linear array of microwave sensors for moisture content mapping in thin or thick material sheets is introduced. The array building block is represented by a straight microstrip line ...electromagnetically coupled to a resonant slot structure properly loaded by two PIN diodes. Each array element constitutes a single slot sensor interacting with the material under test by means of the fields radiated through the slot. When the diodes are in the ON state, each sensor and, thus, the whole array, acts like a low loss transmission line. Otherwise, when the diodes are in the OFF state, the slots are allowed to resonate. Switching the array elements one at a time, the array electronically scans the specimen under test.

This investigation is part of a transcultural research project on women and health, which has as its conceptual framework women's life experiences. This research is qualitative in nature, and the ...methodology utilized is a content analysis of the documented discourses of a group of lower class women in Ribeirão Preto (SP). The results demonstrate that for these women, health is much more than the absence of disease". Their health concerns are biological, interpersonal, social and economic in nature, and are based more upon their personal experiences and social perceptions than on the concept of health and disease. The importance of this research is its relevance for quality nursing care which takes into consideration the many aspects of being a woman.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the dynamic atrial endocardial activation pattern during atrial fibrillation and to investigate the electrophysiologic changes related to the self-termination of ...the arrhythmia. Twenty patients with daily recurrences of lone paroxysmal atrial fibrillation episodes underwent electrophysiological study with contemporary recording of the atrial signal in high right atrium, low right atrium and coronary sinus. Sixty episodes lasting longer than 1 min were recorded, 22 spontaneous and 38 induced with a single extrastimulus. A significant correlation has been demonstrated for the mean of 100 consecutive intervals evaluated at the arrhythmia onset and the atrial functional refractory period (R = 0.73, p < 0.001). Mean FF length increased significantly in the minute preceding self-termination of atrial fibrillation in all the 3 recording sites. On the contrary, a significant decrease of mean FF length was documented in long lasting episodes. Self-termination of atrial fibrillation episodes implies a peculiar pattern of intra-atrial interval. Therefore the analysis of FF intervals seems to have pathophysiological implication and may be applied also to evaluate pharmacological interventions.
Ninety-two patients with diagnosis of lone atrial fibrillation (AF) were retrospectively identified by our in-hospital records. Among the 92 patients, 62 were males and 30 females. Mean age was 50 ...+/- 15 years (range 13-81). In 30% of the patients mild to moderate systemic hypertension was present. None had thyroid dysfunction. At the time of our first clinical observation, AF showed the following characteristics: recurrent AF in 58% of the cases (53 patients), chronic AF in 16% of the cases (15 patients) and first episode of AF in 26% of the cases (24 patients). Patient's symptoms were: palpitation in 73% of the cases, dyspnea in 24%, asthenia in 22%, chest pain in 19%, dizziness in 19% and syncope in 9% of the cases. In 9% of the subjects AF was asymptomatic. Recurrent AF presented with more than one episode per day in 12% of the cases, one per week in 16% of the cases, one-two episodes in 1 month in 8% of the cases and between two and six episodes in 1 year in 33% of the cases. Cross-sectional echocardiography, evidenced a higher prevalence of left atrial enlargement in patients with chronic AF (7/15 cases = 47%) either compared to subjects with recurrent AF (5/53 cases = 9%, p < 0.005) or compared to subjects with a first episode of AF (3/24 cases = 11%, p < 0.05). Echocardiographic signs of left ventricular dysfunction (left ventricular enlargement or hypokinesia) were found in 27% of the patients with chronic AF and in 8% of the other two groups (NS).
