Previous studies from our laboratory have identified a novel mu opiate receptor micro(3), which is expressed in several different cell types and tissues including human vascular endothelial cells, ...leukocytes and neural tissues. This novel micro receptor is selective for the opiate alkaloid morphine, since this receptor does not bind other opioid peptides.
This report details the acute affects of morphine exposure (1 microg/ml) to human leukocytes by analyzing gene expression using microarrays (Applied Biosystems). Robust estimation of the median fold change was used to identify candidates for significantly differentially expressed genes. An independent experiment using four same sample arrays was used to test the algorithm and to confirm the calculated percentage of falsely significant genes.
Data obtained from this study demonstrate that acute morphine exposure differentially affected genes that are involved in immune function, signal transduction, cell adhesion, and apoptosis.
Acute morphine exposure to human leukocytes results in specific and significant alterations in gene expression.
Serials cancellations are dreaded equally by librarians and faculty. Previously, faculty reviewed title lists, and librarians canceled what they recommended. Today's cancellation process is more ...complex; there has to be a context and a timetable. Reports must include at least data about historical pricing and titles associated with e-packages that are not cancellable. Although libraries' workflows differ, there are basic steps necessary to carry out a successful cancellation process. This joint presentation demonstrated how integrated planning and the use of serials management tools are used to organize complex information into useable data. It takes early and collaborative planning between Collection Development, teaching faculty, and Serials Technical Services to make a dreaded process less painful and more effective. This tactics session was delivered in parts by Susanne Clement and Gaele Gillespie, Head of Collection Development and Serials Librarian, respectively, at Watson Library, University of Kansas, and by Sarah Tusa, Coordinator of Collection Development and Acquisitions at the Mary and John Gray Library, Lamar University.

Librarians are well known as gatherers of statistics and other data. However, we do not always use the information that we gather, preferring instead to point to the numbers themselves as evidence of ...our work. This presentation attempted both to describe the benefits and drawbacks of numerous ways to accumulate information about our collections and library services and to show how that information can be used to make collection management decisions. The types of data to be described include usage statistics, subjectâ€"date analysis, bibliography or peer comparisons, patron input, cost-per-use, wear and tear, and anecdotal evidence. No one method of gathering data will give a complete picture. However, using a combination of data gathering methods can help to give an overall picture of the strengths and weaknesses of a given collection and give clues about what areas may need development-or can be ignored.

Blake explains her decision to step down from a library director's position to climb down the corporate ladder. As director of a college library, she grew tired of the academic politics and struggles ...to retain staff and budget, as well as the long hours and the piled-high desk.
