ABSTRACT We present the discovery of the X-ray and optical afterglows of the short-duration GRB 150101B, pinpointing the event to an early-type host galaxy at z = 0.1343 0.0030. This makes GRB ...150101B the most nearby short gamma-ray burst (GRB) with an early-type host galaxy discovered to date. Fitting the spectral energy distribution of the host galaxy results in an inferred stellar mass of , stellar population age of 2-2.5 Gyr, and star formation rate of 0.4 M yr−1. The host of GRB 150101B is one of the largest and most luminous short GRB host galaxies, with a B-band luminosity of and half-light radius of 8 kpc. GRB 150101B is located at a projected distance of 7.35 0.07 kpc from its host center and lies on a faint region of its host rest-frame optical light. Its location, combined with the lack of associated supernova, is consistent with an NS-NS/NS-BH merger progenitor. From modeling the evolution of the broadband afterglow, we calculate isotropic-equivalent gamma-ray and kinetic energies of erg and erg, respectively, a circumburst density of cm−3, and a jet opening angle of 9°. Using observations extending to 30 days, we place upper limits of erg s−1 on associated kilonova emission. We compare searches following previous short GRBs to existing kilonova models and demonstrate the difficulty of performing effective kilonova searches from cosmological short GRBs using current ground-based facilities. We show that at the Advanced LIGO/VIRGO horizon distance of 200 Mpc, searches reaching depths of 23-24 AB mag are necessary to probe a meaningful range of kilonova models.

-process; the production of relativistic ejecta; the equation of state of neutron stars and the nature of the merger remnant; the binary coalescence timescale; and a measurement of the Hubble constant via the “standard siren” technique. In detail, all of these results depend on the distance to the host galaxy of the merger event, NGC 4993. In this Letter we measure the surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) distance to NGC 4993 in the F110W and F160W passbands of the Wide Field Camera 3 Infrared Channel (WFC3/IR) on the
Hubble Space Telescope

, thereby helping to break the inherent distance-inclination degeneracy of the GW data at distances where many future BNS mergers are likely to be detected.
The next step after ITER is the demonstration of stable electricity production with a fusion reactor. Key design performance will have to be met by the corresponding power plant demonstrator (DEMO), ...fulfilling a large number of constraints. System codes such as SYCOMORE, by simulating all the fusion power plant sub-systems, address these questions. To be able to perform design optimizations, simplified models relying on physical and technological assumptions have to be used, resulting in a large number of input parameters. As these parameters are not always exactly known, the impact of their associated uncertainties on final design performance has to be evaluated. Sensitivity methods, by measuring the relative influence of inputs on the figures of merit of the design, allow the dominant parameters to be selected. This information helps the search for optimal working points, guides the priority for technical improvements and finally allows meaningful inputs for uncertainty propagation to be selected. A full set of sensitivity methods and their application to an ITER and DEMO design will be presented, discussing both the statistical method behaviours and the physical results. Plasma shape parameters (minor radius and plasma elongations) share half of the net electricity power sensitivity for the DEMO 2015 design, while the toroidal magnetic field and the 95% safety factor are responsible for 23% and 17% of the electric power sensitivity, respectively. The plasma minor radius is responsible for 45% of the pulse duration sensitivity for the DEMO 2015 design, while plasma physics parameters drive % of the pulse duration sensitivity.

Bile acids regulate the transcription of genes that control cholesterol homeostasis through molecular mechanisms that are poorly understood. Physiological concentrations of free and conjugated ...chenodeoxycholic acid, lithocholic acid, and deoxycholic acid activated the farnesoid X receptor (FXR; NR1H4), an orphan nuclear receptor. As ligands, these bile acids and their conjugates modulated interaction of FXR with a peptide derived from steroid receptor coactivator 1. These results provide evidence for a nuclear bile acid signaling pathway that may regulate cholesterol homeostasis.
Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is an allergic inflammatory disorder of the esophagus that is compounded by genetic predisposition and hypersensitivity to environmental antigens. Using high-density ...oligonucleotide expression chips, a disease-specific esophageal transcript signature was identified and was shown to be largely reversible with therapy. In an effort to expand the molecular signature of EoE, we performed RNA sequencing on esophageal biopsies from healthy controls and patients with active EoE and identified a total of 1607 significantly dysregulated transcripts (1096 upregulated, 511 downregulated). When clustered by raw expression levels, an abundance of immune cell-specific transcripts are highly induced in EoE but expressed at low (or undetectable) levels in healthy controls. Moreover, 66% of the gene signature identified by RNA sequencing was previously unrecognized in the EoE transcript signature by microarray-based expression profiling and included several long non-coding RNAs (lncRNA), an emerging class of transcriptional regulators. The lncRNA BRAF-activated non-protein coding RNA (BANCR) was upregulated in EoE and induced in interleukin-13 (IL-13)-treated primary esophageal epithelial cells. Repression of BANCR significantly altered the expression of IL-13-induced proinflammatory genes. Together, these data comprise new potential biomarkers of EoE and demonstrate a novel role for lncRNAs in EoE and IL-13-associated responses.
ABSTRACT We present observations of SN 2015bn (=PS15ae = CSS141223-113342+004332 = MLS150211-113342+004333), a Type I superluminous supernova (SLSN) at redshift z = 0.1136. As well as being one of ...the closest SLSNe I yet discovered, it is intrinsically brighter ( ) and in a fainter galaxy ( ) than other SLSNe at . We used this opportunity to collect the most extensive data set for any SLSN I to date, including densely sampled spectroscopy and photometry, from the UV to the NIR, spanning −50 to +250 days from optical maximum. SN 2015bn fades slowly, but exhibits surprising undulations in the light curve on a timescale of 30-50 days, especially in the UV. The spectrum shows extraordinarily slow evolution except for a rapid transformation between +7 and +20-30 days. No narrow emission lines from slow-moving material are observed at any phase. We derive physical properties including the bolometric luminosity, and find slow velocity evolution and non-monotonic temperature and radial evolution. A deep radio limit rules out a healthy off-axis gamma-ray burst, and places constraints on the pre-explosion mass loss. The data can be consistently explained by a M stripped progenitor exploding with erg kinetic energy, forming a magnetar with a spin-down timescale of ∼20 days (thus avoiding a gamma-ray burst) that reheats the ejecta and drives ionization fronts. The most likely alternative scenario-interaction with ∼20 M of dense, inhomogeneous circumstellar material-can be tested with continuing radio follow-up.
The performance of the reconstruction, calibration and identification of electrons and photons with the ATLAS detector at the LHC is a key component to realise the ATLAS full physics potential, both ...in the searches for new physics and in precision measurements. For instance, they all played a critical role in the discovery of a Higgs boson, announced by the ATLAS Collaboration in 2012, and in the measurement of its properties. This proceedings presents a description of the algorithms used for the reconstruction and identification of electrons and photons with the ATLAS detector, as well as results from the measurements of their efficiencies in pp collisions. The electron and photon energy calibration procedure is discussed, as well as its impact on the precise measurement of the Higgs boson mass.
Synapse development and neuronal activity represent fundamental processes for the establishment of cognitive function. Structural organization as well as signalling pathways from receptor stimulation ...to gene expression regulation are mediated by synaptic activity and misregulated in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID). Deleterious mutations in the PTCHD1 (Patched domain containing 1) gene have been described in male patients with X-linked ID and/or ASD. The structure of PTCHD1 protein is similar to the Patched (PTCH1) receptor; however, the cellular mechanisms and pathways associated with PTCHD1 in the developing brain are poorly determined. Here we show that PTCHD1 displays a C-terminal PDZ-binding motif that binds to the postsynaptic proteins PSD95 and SAP102. We also report that PTCHD1 is unable to rescue the canonical sonic hedgehog (SHH) pathway in cells depleted of PTCH1, suggesting that both proteins are involved in distinct cellular signalling pathways. We find that Ptchd1 deficiency in male mice (Ptchd1
) induces global changes in synaptic gene expression, affects the expression of the immediate-early expression genes Egr1 and Npas4 and finally impairs excitatory synaptic structure and neuronal excitatory activity in the hippocampus, leading to cognitive dysfunction, motor disabilities and hyperactivity. Thus our results support that PTCHD1 deficiency induces a neurodevelopmental disorder causing excitatory synaptic dysfunction.
Fosfomycin is a phosphonic acid derivative active against a wide spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens. It is used for the treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections (uUTI) ...or severe infections by oral or intravenous (i.v.) administration. In order to improve its performance and robustness, the fosfomycin strip, an antibiotic gradient diffusion strip, was redeveloped and evaluated in the multicenter study summarized in this paper. ETEST fosfomycin (ETEST FO) clinical performance was evaluated by three study sites on 152 Enterococcus faecalis, 100 Staphylococcus spp. and 330 Enterobacterales in comparison with the CLSI and EUCAST agar dilution reference method. Referring to FDA performance criteria, the ETEST FO achieved 91.0% of essential (EA) and 99.0% of categorical agreement (CA) for Escherichia coli. In addition, 98.0% EA and 93.4% CA were achieved for E. faecalis, with no very major errors (VME) or major errors (ME). According to EUCAST breakpoints for intravenous fosfomycin use, Enterobacterales and Staphylococcus spp. also met ISO acceptance criteria for EA and CA (EA 91.5%, 94.0%, respectively, and CA 98.0% for both). A VME rate of 8.8% was observed for Enterobacterales but the MICs were within EA. A trend to predict lower MICs for Citrobacter spp., E. coli and Salmonella enterica and to predict higher MICs for Klebsiella pneumoniae MICs was observed, while ETEST FO should not be used for Enterobacter cloacae, because of low EA and a high VME rate. The study results support the efficiency of the novel ETEST FO, making it an easy-to-handle tool as a substitute to the classical agar dilution method.
