We present the first measurements of nitryl chloride (ClNO2) over continental Europe. Significant quantities of ClNO2, up to 800 pptv, were measured at a mountaintop field site in Hessen, southwest ...Germany. ClNO2 was detected during the majority of nights between the 15th August and 16th September 2011, its largest mixing ratios being associated with air masses influenced by sea salt and anthropogenic NOx emissions. ClNO2 persisted in measurable quantities until early afternoons on days with low photolysis frequencies. As a consequence, early morning production rates of Cl atoms could significantly exceed the production of OH via ozone photolysis, likely leading to increased O3 production.

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from mixed anthropogenic and biogenic precursors has been studied exposing reaction mixtures to natural sunlight in the SAPHIR chamber in Jülich, Germany. In ...this study aromatic compounds served as examples of anthropogenic volatile organic compound (VOC) and a mixture of α-pinene and limonene as an example for biogenic VOC. Several experiments with exclusively aromatic precursors were performed to establish a relationship between yield and organic aerosol mass loading for the atmospheric relevant range of aerosol loads of 0.01 to 10 μg m−3. The yields (0.5 to 9%) were comparable to previous data and further used for the detailed evaluation of the mixed biogenic and anthropogenic experiments. For the mixed experiments a number of different oxidation schemes were addressed. The reactivity, the sequence of addition, and the amount of the precursors influenced the SOA properties. Monoterpene oxidation products, including carboxylic acids and dimer esters were identified in the aged aerosol at levels comparable to ambient air. OH radicals were measured by Laser Induced Fluorescence, which allowed for establishing relations of aerosol properties and composition to the experimental OH dose. Furthermore, the OH measurements in combination with the derived yields for aromatic SOA enabled application of a simplified model to calculate the chemical turnover of the aromatic precursor and corresponding anthropogenic contribution to the mixed aerosol. The estimated anthropogenic contributions were ranging from small ( 8%) up to significant fraction (>50%) providing a suitable range to study the effect of aerosol composition on the aerosol volatility (volume fraction remaining (VFR) at 343 K: 0.86–0.94). The aromatic aerosol had higher oxygen to carbon ratio O/C and was less volatile than the biogenic fraction. However, in order to produce significant amount of aromatic SOA the reaction mixtures needed a higher OH dose that also increased O/C and provided a less volatile aerosol. The SOA yields, O/C, and f44 (the mass fraction of CO2+ ions in the mass spectra which can be considered as a measure of carboxylic groups) in the mixed photo-chemical experiments could be described as linear combinations of the corresponding properties of the pure systems. For VFR there was in addition an enhancement effect, making the mixed aerosol significantly less volatile than what could be predicted from the pure systems. A strong positive correlation was found between changes in volatility and O/C with the exception during dark hours where the SOA volatility decreased while O/C did not change significantly. Thus, this change in volatility under dark conditions as well as the anthropogenic enhancement is due to chemical or morphological changes not affecting O/C.
Diurnal and seasonal variations of gaseous sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and methane sulfonic acid (MSA) were measured in NE Atlantic air at the Mace Head atmospheric research station during the years 2010 ...and 2011. The measurements utilized selected-ion chemical ionization mass spectrometry (SI/CIMS) with a detection limit for both compounds of 4.3 104 cm-3 at 5 min signal integration. The H2SO4 and MSA gas-phase concentrations were analyzed in conjunction with the condensational sink for both compounds derived from 3 nm to 10 mu m (aerodynamic diameter) aerosol size distributions. Accommodation coefficients of 1.0 for H2SO4 and 0.12 for MSA were assumed, leading to estimated atmospheric lifetimes on the order of 7 and 25 min, respectively. With the SI/CIMS instrument in OH measurement mode alternating between OH signal and background (non-OH) signal, evidence was obtained for the presence of one or more unknown oxidants of SO2 in addition to OH. Depending on the nature of the oxidant(s), its ambient concentration may be enhanced in the CIMS inlet system by additional production. The apparent unknown SO2 oxidant was additionally confirmed by direct measurements of SO2 in conjunction with calculated H2SO4 concentrations. The calculated H2SO4 concentrations were consistently lower than the measured concentrations by a factor of 4.7 plus or minus 2.4 when considering the oxidation of SO2 by OH as the only source of H2SO4. Both the OH and the background signal were also observed to increase significantly during daytime aerosol nucleation events, independent of the ozone photolysis frequency, J(O1D), and were followed by peaks in both H2SO4 and MSA concentrations. This suggests a strong relation between the unknown oxidant(s), OH chemistry, and the atmospheric photolysis and photooxidation of biogenic iodine compounds. As to the identity of the atmospheric SO2 oxidant(s), we have been able to exclude ClO, BrO, IO, and OIO as possible candidates based on {ab initio} calculations. Never\-theless, IO could contribute significantly to the observed CIMS background signal. A detailed analysis of this CIMS background signal in context with recently published kinetic data currently suggests that Criegee intermediates (CIs) produced from ozonolysis of alkenes play no significant role for SO2 oxidation in the marine atmosphere at Mace Head. On the other hand, SO2 oxidation by small CIs such as CH2OO produced photolytically or possibly in the photochemical degradation of methane is consistent with our observations. In addition, H2SO4 formation from dimethyl sulfide oxidation via SO3 as an intermediate instead of SO2 also appears to be a viable explanation. Both pathways need to be further explored.
Atmospheric concentrations of nitrous acid (HONO), one of the major precursors of the hydroxyl radical (OH) in the troposphere, significantly exceed the values predicted by the assumption of a ...photostationary state (PSS) during daytime. Therefore, additional sources of HONO were intensively investigated in the last decades. This study presents budget calculations of HONO based on simultaneous measurements of all relevant species, including HONO and OH at two different measurement heights, i.e. 1 m above the ground and about 2 to 3 m above the canopy (24 m above the ground), conducted in a boreal forest environment. We observed mean HONO concentrations of about 6.5 × 108 molecules cm−3 (26 ppt) during daytime, more than 20 times higher than expected from the PSS of 0.2 × 108 molecules cm−3 (1 ppt). To close the budgets at both heights, a strong additional source term during daytime is required. This unidentified source is at its maximum at noon (up to 1.1 × 106 molecules cm−3 s−1, 160 ppt h−1) and in general up to 2.3 times stronger above the canopy than close to the ground. The insignificance of known gas phase reactions and other processes like dry deposition or advection compared to the photolytic decomposition of HONO at this measurement site was an ideal prerequisite to study possible correlations of this unknown term to proposed HONO sources. But neither the proposed emissions from soils nor the proposed photolysis of adsorbed HNO3 contributed substantially to the unknown source. However, the unknown source was found to be perfectly correlated to the unbalanced photolytic loss of HONO.
ABSTRACT
The photolysis of nitrophenols was proposed as a source of reactive radicals and NOx compounds in polluted air. The S0 singlet ground state and T1 first excited triplet state of nitrophenol ...were investigated to assess the energy dependence of the photofragmentation product distribution as a function of the reaction conditions, based on quantum chemical calculations at the G3SX//M06–2X/aug‐cc‐pVTZ level of theory combined with RRKM master equation calculations. On both potential energy surfaces, we find rapid isomerization with the aci‐nitrophenol isomer, as well as pathways forming NO, NO2, OH, HONO, and H‐, and O‐atoms, extending earlier studies on the T1 state and in agreement with available work on other nitroaromatics. We find that accessing the lowest photofragmentation channel from the S0 ground state requires only 268 kJ/mol of activation energy, but at a pressure of 1 atm collisional energy loss dominates such that significant fragmentation only occurs at internal energies exceeding 550 kJ/mol, making this surface unimportant for atmospheric photolysis. Intersystem crossing to the T1 triplet state leads more readily to fragmentation, with dissociation occurring at energies of ∼450 kJ/mol above the singlet ground state even at 1 atm. The main product is found to be OH + nitrosophenoxy, followed by formation of hydroxyphenoxy + NO and phenyloxyl + HONO. The predictions are compared against available experimental data.
The oxidation of limonene by the hydroxyl (OH) radical
and ozone (O3) was investigated in the atmospheric simulation chamber
SAPHIR (Simulation of Atmospheric
PHotochemistry In a large Reaction ...Chamber) in experiments performed at different nitric oxide (NO) mixing ratios from nearly 0 up to 10 ppbv. For the experiments dominated by OH
oxidation, the formaldehyde (HCHO) yield was experimentally determined and found to be (12 ± 3), (13 ± 3), and (32 ± 5) % for
experiments with low (∼ 0.1 ppbv), medium (∼ 0.3 ppbv), and high NO (5 to 10 ppbv), respectively. The yield in an
ozonolysis-only experiment was (10 ± 1) %, which agrees with previous
laboratory studies. The experimental yield of the first-generation organic nitrates from limonene–OH oxidation is calculated as (34 ± 5) %,
about 11 % higher than the value in the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM),
which is derived from structure–activity relationships (SARs). Time series of measured radicals, trace-gas concentrations, and OH reactivity are compared
to results from zero-dimensional chemical box model calculations applying
MCM v3.3.1. Modeled OH reactivity is 5 to 10 s−1 (25 % to 33 % of the OH reactivity at the start of the experiment) higher than measured
values at the end of the experiments under all chemical conditions investigated, suggesting either that there are unaccounted loss processes of
limonene oxidation products or that products are less reactive toward OH. In
addition, model calculations underestimate measured hydroperoxyl radical
(HO2) concentrations by 20 % to 90 % and overestimate organic
peroxyl radical (RO2) concentrations by 50 % to 300 %. The largest deviations are found in low-NO experiments and in the ozonolysis experiment.
An OH radical budget analysis, which uses only measured quantities, shows
that the budget is closed in most of the experiments. A similar budget
analysis for RO2 radicals suggests that an additional RO2 loss
rate constant of about (1–6) × 10−2 s−1 for
first-generation RO2 is required to match the measured RO2
concentrations in all experiments. Sensitivity model runs indicate that
additional reactions converting RO2 to HO2 at a rate constant of
about (1.7–3.0) × 10−2 s−1 would improve the
model–measurement agreement of NOx, HO2, and RO2 concentrations and OH reactivity. Reaction pathways that could lead to the production of
additional OH and HO2 are discussed, which include isomerization reactions of RO2 from the oxidation of limonene, different branching
ratios for the reaction of RO2 with HO2, and a faster rate
constant for RO2 recombination reactions. As the exact chemical
mechanisms of the additional HO2 and OH sources could not be
identified, further work needs to focus on quantifying organic product
species and organic peroxy radicals from limonene oxidation.
The photooxidation of the most abundant monoterpene, α-pinene, by the hydroxyl radical (OH) was investigated at atmospheric concentrations in the atmospheric simulation chamber SAPHIR. Concentrations ...of nitric oxide (NO) were below 120 pptv. Yields of organic oxidation products are determined from measured time series giving values of 0.11±0.05, 0.19±0.06, and 0.05±0.03 for formaldehyde, acetone, and pinonaldehyde, respectively. The pinonaldehyde yield is at the low side of yields measured in previous laboratory studies, ranging from 0.06 to 0.87. These studies were mostly performed at reactant concentrations much higher than observed in the atmosphere. Time series of measured radical and trace-gas concentrations are compared to results from model calculations applying the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM) 3.3.1. The model predicts pinonaldehyde mixing ratios that are at least a factor of 4 higher than measured values. At the same time, modeled hydroxyl and hydroperoxy (HO2) radical concentrations are approximately 25 % lower than measured values. Vereecken et al. (2007) suggested a shift of the initial organic peroxy radical (RO2) distribution towards RO2 species that do not yield pinonaldehyde but produce other organic products. Implementing these modifications reduces the model–measurement gap of pinonaldehyde by 20 % and also improves the agreement in modeled and measured radical concentrations by 10 %. However, the chemical oxidation mechanism needs further adjustment to explain observed radical and pinonaldehyde concentrations. This could be achieved by adjusting the initial RO2 distribution, but could also be done by implementing alternative reaction channels of RO2 species that currently lead to the formation of pinonaldehyde in the model.
The reaction of OH radicals with a series of methylated benzenes was studied in a temperature range 300-350 K using a flash-photolysis resonance fluorescence technique. Reversible OH additions led to ...complex OH decays dependent on the number of distinguishable adducts. Except for hexamethylbenzene, triexponential OH decay curves were obtained, consistent with formation of at least two adduct species. For three compounds that can strictly form two adduct isomers for symmetry reasons (1,4-dimethyl-, 1,3,5-trimethyl-, and 1,2,4,5-tetramethylbenzene) with OH bound ortho or ipso with respect to the methyl groups, OH decay curves were analysed in terms of a reaction mechanism in which the two adducts can be formed directly by OH addition or indirectly by isomerization. In all cases one adduct (add1) is dominating the decomposition back to OH. The other (add2) is more elusive and only detectable at elevated temperatures, similar to the single OH adduct of hexamethylbenzene. Two limiting cases of the general reaction mechanism could be examined quantitatively: reversible formation of add2 exclusively in the OH reaction or by isomerization of add1. Total OH rate constants, adduct loss rate constants and products of forward and reverse rate constants of reversible reactions were determined. From these quantities, adduct yields, equilibrium constants, as well as reaction enthalpies and entropies were derived for the three aromatics. Adduct yields strongly depend on the selected reaction model but generally formation of add1 predominates. For both models equilibrium constants of OH reactions lie between those of OH + benzene from the literature and those obtained for OH + hexamethylbenzene. The corresponding reaction enthalpies of add1 and add2 formations are in a range -87 ± 20 kJ mol(-1), less exothermic than for hexamethylbenzene (-101 kJ mol(-1)). Reaction enthalpies of possible add1 → add2 isomerizations are comparatively small. Because results for 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene are partly inconsistent with a direct formation of add2, we promote the existence of isomerization reactions. Moreover, based on available theoretical work in the literature, add1 and add2 are tentatively identified as ortho and ipso adducts, respectively. Total OH rate constants were obtained for all title compounds. They can be described by Arrhenius equations: kOH = A × exp(-B/T). The parameters ln(A/(cm(3) s(-1))) = -25.6 ± 0.3, -25.3 ± 0.6, -27.3 ± 0.3, -24.6 ± 0.3, -26.2 ± 0.4, -26.2 ± 0.4 and -24.5 ± 0.2, and B/K = -160 ± 90, -550 ± 180, -1120 ± 90, -330 ± 100, -820 ± 100, -980 ± 130, and -570 ± 40 were determined for 1,4-dimethyl-, 1,3,5-trimethyl-, 1,2,4,5-, 1,2,3,5- and 1,2,3,4-tetramethyl-, pentamethyl-, and hexamethylbenzene.
Measurements of OH and HO2 radicals were conducted in a pine-dominated forest in southern Finland during the HUMPPA-COPEC-2010 (Hyytiälä United Measurements of Photochemistry and Particles in Air – ...Comprehensive Organic Precursor Emission and Concentration study) field campaign in summer 2010. Simultaneous side-by-side measurements of hydroxyl radicals were conducted with two instruments using chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS) and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), indicating small systematic disagreement, OHLIF / OHCIMS = (1.31 ± 0.14). Subsequently, the LIF instrument was moved to the top of a 20 m tower, just above the canopy, to investigate the radical chemistry at the ecosystem–atmosphere interface. Comprehensive measurements including observations of many volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and the total OH reactivity were conducted and analysed using steady-state calculations as well as an observationally constrained box model. Production rates of OH calculated from measured OH precursors are consistent with those derived from the steady-state assumption and measured total OH loss under conditions of moderate OH reactivity. The primary photolytic sources of OH contribute up to one-third to the total OH production. OH recycling, which occurs mainly by HO2 reacting with NO and O3, dominates the total hydroxyl radical production in this boreal forest. Box model simulations agree with measurements for hydroxyl radicals (OHmod. / OHobs. = 1.00 ± 0.16), while HO2 mixing ratios are significantly under-predicted (HO2mod. / HO2obs. = 0.3 ± 0.2), and simulated OH reactivity does not match the observed OH reactivity. The simultaneous under-prediction of HO2 and OH reactivity in periods in which OH concentrations were simulated realistically suggests that the missing OH reactivity is an unaccounted-for source of HO2. Detailed analysis of the HOx production, loss, and recycling pathways suggests that in periods of high total OH reactivity there are additional recycling processes forming OH directly, not via reaction of HO2 with NO or O3, or unaccounted-for primary HOx sources. Under conditions of moderate observed OH reactivity and high actinic flux, an additional RO2 source of approximately 1 × 106 molec cm−3 s−1 would be required to close the radical budget. Nevertheless, a major fraction of the OH recycling occurs via the reaction of HO2 with NO and O3 in this terpene-dominated environment.
