The gamma-ray pulsar PSR B1706-44 and the adjacent supernova remnant (SNR) candidate G343.1-2.3 were observed by H.E.S.S. during a dedicated observation campaign in 2007. As a result of this ...observation campaign, a new source of very-high-energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray emission, HESS J1708-443, was detected with a statistical significance of 7 sigma, although no significant point-like emission was detected at the position of the energetic pulsar itself. In this paper, the morphological and spectral analyses of the newly-discovered TeV source are presented. The centroid of HESS J1708-443 is considerably offset from the pulsar and located near the apparent center of the SNR, at RA(J2000) = 17h08m11s +/- 17s and Dec(J2000) = -44d20' +/- 4'. The source is found to be significantly more extended than the H.E.S.S. point spread function (~0.1 deg), with an intrinsic Gaussian width of 0.29 deg +/- 0.04 deg. Its integral flux between 1 and 10 TeV is ~ 3.8 x 10^-12 ph cm^-2 s^-1, equivalent to 17% of the Crab Nebula flux in the same energy range. The measured energy spectrum is well-fit by a power law with a relatively hard photon index Gamma = 2.0 +/- 0.1 (stat) +/- 0.2 (sys). Additional multi-wavelength data, including 330 MHz VLA observations, were used to investigate the VHE gamma-ray source's possible associations with the pulsar wind nebula of PSR B1706-44 and/or with the complex radio structure of the partial shell-type SNR G343.1-2.3.
H.E.S.S. and MAGIC experiments have demonstrated the high level of maturity of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) dedicated to very-high-energy gamma ray astronomy domain. The ...astroparticle physics community is preparing the next generation of instruments, with sensitivity improved by an order of magnitude in the 10 GeV to 100 TeV range. To reach this goal, the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will consist in an array of 50-100 dishes of various sizes and various spacing, each equipped with a camera, made of few thousands fast photo-detectors and its associated front-end electronics. The total number of electronics channels will be larger than 100,000 to be compared to the total of 6,000 channels of the 5-telecopes H.E.S.S. / H.E.S.S.-II array. To decrease the overall CTA cost, a consequent effort should be done to lower the cost of the electronics while keeping performance at least as good as the one demonstrated on the current experiments and simplifying its maintenance. This will be allowed by mass production, use of standardized modules and integration of front-end functions in ASICs. The 3-year NECTAr program started in 2009 addresses these two topics. Its final aim is to develop and test a demonstrator module of a generic CTA camera. The paper is mainly focused on one of the main components of this module, the NECTAr ASIC which samples the photo-detector signal in a circular analog memory at several GSPS and digitizes it over 12 bits after having received an external trigger.
Some Quantum Gravity models predict a violation of Lorentz invariance. Namely, the velocity of photons in vacuum could depend on their energies. One possibility for Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV) ...searches is to look for energy-dependent delays in the arrival time of very high energy (VHE) photons coming from distant sources such as TeV emitting Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), mainly blazars. Up to now, observations of flaring AGN have only provided upper limits on LIV energy scale since no significant time-delay was found and confirmed. However, AGN are not perfect sources for such LIV searches because intrinsic temporal effects can be produced by emission processes, similarly to what has been observed with gamma-ray bursts. With the beginning of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) operations in the coming decade, significant lags should be measured and the question of the origin of these lags will arise. In particular, propagation effects (LIV) will have to be disentangled from source-intrinsic effects. A precise time-dependent modeling of blazar flares becomes necessary to understand the different origins of these time-delays. In this contribution we report on time-delay studies for blazars in the VHE domain. Using dif- ferent time-dependent emission scenarios of blazar flares, we illustrate their resulting intrinsic spectral lags and provide tools for further analyses of the fine temporal and spectral behavior of such astrophysical sources. Tightly constraining intrinsic effects should then allow to better high- light any extrinsic contribution due to LIV. Conversely, any significant detection of a time-delay should provide new constraints on emission scenarios.
Recent theoretical predictions of the lowest very high energy (VHE) luminosity of SN 1006 are only a factor 5 below the previously published H.E.S.S. upper limit, thus motivating further in-depth ...observations of this source. Deep observations at VHE energies (above 100 GeV) were carried out with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) of Cherenkov Telescopes from 2003 to 2008. More than 100 hours of data have been collected and subjected to an improved analysis procedure. Observations resulted in the detection of VHE gamma-rays from SN 1006. The measured gamma-ray spectrum is compatible with a power-law, the flux is of the order of 1% of that detected from the Crab Nebula, and is thus consistent with the previously established H.E.S.S. upper limit. The source exhibits a bipolar morphology, which is strongly correlated with non-thermal X-rays. Because the thickness of the VHE-shell is compatible with emission from a thin rim, particle acceleration in shock waves is likely to be the origin of the gamma-ray signal. The measured flux level can be accounted for by inverse Compton emission, but a mixed scenario that includes leptonic and hadronic components and takes into account the ambient matter density inferred from observations also leads to a satisfactory description of the multi-wavelength spectrum.
Gamma-ray astronomy has become one of the main experimental ways to test the modified dispersion relations (MDRs) of photons in vacuum, obtained in some attempts to formulate a theory of Quantum ...Gravity. The MDRs in use imply time delays which depend on the energy, and which increase with distance following some function of redshift. The use of transient, or variable, distant and highly energetic sources, already allows us to set stringent limits on the energy scale related to this phenomenon, usually thought to be of the order of the Planck energy, but robust conclusions on the existence of MDR-related propagation effects still require the analysis of a large population of sources. In order to gather the biggest sample of sources possible for MDR searches at teraelectronvolt energies, the H.E.S.S., MAGIC and VERITAS collaborations enacted a joint task force to combine all their relevant data to constrain the Quantum Gravity energy scale. In the present article, the likelihood method used, to combine the data and provide a common limit, is described in detail and tested through simulations of recorded data sets for a gamma-ray burst, three flaring active galactic nuclei and two pulsars. Statistical and systematic errors are assessed and included in the likelihood as nuisance parameters. In addition, a comparison of two different formalisms for distance dependence of the time lags is performed for the first time. In a second article, to appear later, the method will be applied on all relevant data from the three experiments.
Most $\gamma$-ray detected active galactic nuclei are blazars with one of
their relativistic jets pointing towards the Earth. Only a few objects belong
to the class of radio galaxies or misaligned ...blazars. Here, we investigate the
nature of the object PKS 0625-354, its $\gamma$-ray flux and spectral
variability and its broad-band spectral emission with observations from
H.E.S.S., Fermi-LAT, Swift-XRT, and UVOT taken in November 2018. The H.E.S.S.
light curve above 200 GeV shows an outburst in the first night of observations
followed by a declining flux with a halving time scale of 5.9h. The
$\gamma\gamma$-opacity constrains the upper limit of the angle between the jet
and the line of sight to $\sim10^\circ$. The broad-band spectral energy
distribution shows two humps and can be well fitted with a single-zone
synchrotron self Compton emission model. We conclude that PKS 0625-354, as an
object showing clear features of both blazars and radio galaxies, can be
classified as an intermediate active galactic nuclei. Multi-wavelength studies
of such intermediate objects exhibiting features of both blazars and radio
galaxies are sparse but crucial for the understanding of the broad-band
emission of $\gamma$-ray detected active galactic nuclei in general.
Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has had a major breakthrough with the impressive results obtained using systems of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has a ...huge potential in astrophysics, particle physics and cosmology. CTA is an international initiative to build the next generation instrument, with a factor of 5-10 improvement in sensitivity in the 100 GeV to 10 TeV range and the extension to energies well below 100 GeV and above 100 TeV. CTA will consist of two arrays (one in the north, one in the south) for full sky coverage and will be operated as open observatory. The design of CTA is based on currently available technology. This document reports on the status and presents the major design concepts of CTA.
