The LHCb detector is a forward spectrometer at the LHC, designed to perform high precision studies of B and D hadrons. In Run II of the LHC, a new scheme for the software trigger at LHCb allows ...splitting the triggering of events in two stages, giving room to perform the detector alignment and calibration in real time. In the novel detector alignment and calibration strategy for Run II, data collected at the start of the fill are processed in a few minutes and used to update the alignment constants, while the calibration constants are evaluated for each run. This allows identical constants to be used in the online and offline reconstruction, thus improving the correlation between triggered and offline selected events. The required computing time constraints are met thanks to a new dedicated framework using the multi-core farm infrastructure for the trigger. The larger timing budget, available in the trigger, allows us to perform the same track reconstruction online and offline. This enables LHCb to achieve the best reconstruction performance already in the trigger, and allows physics analyses to be performed directly on the data produced by the trigger reconstruction. The novel real-time processing strategy at LHCb is discussed from both the technical and operational point of view. The overall performance of the LHCb detector on the data of Run II is presented as well.

Lipoxin A4 (LXA4) is a metabolic product of arachidonic acid. Despite potent anti-inflammatory and pro-resolution activities, it remains to be determined if LXA4 has effect on ultraviolet (UV) radiation-induced skin inflammation.
To investigate the effects of systemic administration with LXA4 on UV radiation-induced inflammation and oxidative damage in the skin of mice.
Varied parameters of inflammation and oxidative stress in the skin of mice were evaluated after UV radiation (4.14 J/cm2).
Pretreatment with LXA4 significantly inhibited UV radiation-induced skin edema and myeloperoxidase activity. LXA4 efficacy was enhanced by increasing the time of pre-treatment to up to 72 h. LXA4 reduced UV radiation-induced skin edema, neutrophil recruitment (myeloperoxidase activity and LysM-eGFP+ cells), MMP-9 activity, deposition of collagen fibers, epidermal thickness, sunburn cell counts, and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-33). Depending on the time point, LXA4 increased the levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines (TGF-β and IL-10). LXA4 significantly attenuated UV radiation-induced oxidative damage returning the oxidative status to baseline levels in parameters such as ferric reducing ability, scavenging of free radicals, GSH levels, catalase activity and superoxide anion production. LXA4 also reduced UV radiation-induced gp91phox nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase 2 (NOX2) subunit mRNA expression and enhanced nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and its downstream target enzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (phosphate) quinone oxidoreductase (Nqo1) mRNA expression.
LXA4 inhibited UV radiation-induced skin inflammation by diminishing pro-inflammatory cytokine production and oxidative stress as well as inducing anti-inflammatory cytokines and Nrf2.
Charm mixing and CP violation observables are examined in light of the recently reported evidence from LHCb for CP violation in the charm sector. If the result is confirmed as being due to direct CP ...violation at the 1% level, its effect will need to be taken into account in the interpretation of CP violation observables. The contributions of direct and indirect CP violation to the decay rate asymmetry difference ΔACP and the ratios of effective lifetimes AΓ and yCP are considered here. Terms relevant to the interpretation of future high-precision measurements which have been neglected in the previous literature are identified.

The software alignment of planar tracking detectors using samples of charged particle trajectories may lead to global detector distortions that affect vertex and momentum resolution. We present an ...alignment procedure that constrains such distortions by making use of samples of decay vertices reconstructed from two or more trajectories and putting constraints on their invariant mass. We illustrate the method by using a sample of invariant-mass constrained vertices from D0→K−π+ decays to remove a curvature bias in the LHCb spectrometer.
Aims
The aim of this report is to summarize the clinicopathological findings of five cases of a pseudosarcomatous vascular proliferation of the skin at the site of radiotherapy following surgery for ...carcinoma of the breast and carcinoma of the endometrium. To our knowledge, only five cases of this presumably rare pseudomalignant proliferation have been reported previously.
Methods and results
All patients were females ranging in age from 44 to 70 years. The lesions appeared as solitary or multiple papules or vesicles localized to the field of radiation. Microscopically, they were composed of vascular spaces that exhibited atypical features without qualifying for a diagnosis of angiosarcoma.
Conclusions
Our cases provide additional evidence supporting the benign nature of this atypical vascular proliferation, not recurring, never developing metastases and being cured readily by local excision. Clinical, histopathological and ultrastructural findings suggest a lymphatic origin. Whether these lesions represent a neoplastic or a reactive condition secondary to radiotherapy is unclear. The name ‘benign lymphangiomatous papules of the skin following radiotherapy’ is proposed.
Aim: The purpose of this report is to call attention to a pigmented variant of atypical fibroxanthoma that resembles malignant melanoma, both clinically and histopathologically.
Methods and results
...Thirty‐eight cases of atypical fibroxanthoma were examined for the presence of pigmented areas. Four such cases were found. Neoplastic cells showed erythrophagocytosis and accumulation of haemosiderin pigment in the cytoplasm. In three cases, immunohistochemical studies using a battery of antibodies were performed. Neoplastic cells were strongly positive for vimentin and weakly positive for CD68, whereas they were negative for melanocytic markers, including S100 protein, HMB45, and the monoclonal antibody NK1‐C3 to melanoma‐associated antigen.
Conclusions
Pigmented atypical fibroxanthoma represents a poorly recognized variant of the neoplasm that may be easily misinterpreted as malignant melanoma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of erythrophagocytosis in atypical fibroxanthoma.
The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) is currently the most sensitive axion helioscope designed to search for axions produced by the Primakoff process in the solar core. CAST is using a Large Hadron ...Collider (LHC) test magnet where axions could be converted into X-rays with energies up to 10 keV. During the phase I, the experiment operated with vacuum inside the magnet bores and covered axion masses up to 0.02 eV. In the phase II, the magnet bores were filled with a buffer gas (first super(4)He and later super(3)He) at various densities in order to extend the sensitivity to higher axion masses (up to 1.18 eV). The phase II data taking was completed in 2011. So far, no evidence of axion signal has been found and CAST set the most restrictive experimental limit on the axion-photon coupling constant over a broad range of axion masses. The latest CAST results with super(3)He data in the mass range 0.39 eV < m sub(a)< 0.64 eV will be presented.
