A semiology-based approach to understanding humour is being developed and an interpretation of humour as a “counter-sign,” a two-faced sign within the space of conventionality, is put forward. The ...range of core attributes to interpret the phenomenon of humour is determined. The concepts of the “frame of significance,” “conventionality,” and “meta-communicative marker of conventionality” are elaborated. The general definition of humour is being formulated as a “sign-based identification of non-identifiable signs within the space of conventionality.” An outline is put forward to enable the formal distinction between satire, humour, irony, and jokes. The following questions are addressed: “Why does that which is funny cease to be so if it is repeated many times?”, “Why can the terrifying become funny when recollected?” “Why is the state of bewilderment not always funny but returning to it in one’s thoughts triggers laughter?”
When operating a hybrid vehicle (HEV), it is important to reduce maintenance and repair costs. The HEV electric drive (ED) consists of electronic, electrical and mechanical parts and is considered a ...complex diagnostic model. The availability of an electrical part greatly simplifies the process of monitoring and obtaining information about the state of the system. In order to create a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system (HDEPS), the choice of structural and functional parameters as diagnostic ones is justified, the control points are chosen, and the necessary accuracy and unambiguity of measurements are determined. Qualitative evaluations of the electrical processes occurring in the power supply circuit of ED from a high-voltage accumulator battery for the selection of diagnostic parameters according to the criteria of sensitivity, informative character, stability and manufacturability of measurements are presented. It has been revealed that during HDEPS diagnostics both stable and transient modes of operation of electric machines should be considered; for analysis of ED technical state it is necessary to have information about current mode of HDEPS load; for measurement of instantaneous values of supply voltage and consumption current it is necessary to select the sensors with short response time and linear conversion function. In terms of sensitivity to structural changes in the circuit and parametric deviations, it is necessary to choose, as diagnostic parameters, the voltage or current, depending on the mode of operation of the ED and the point of measurement of the electrical value. The obtained results are the basis for creating a new system of diagnostics of electric power supply HDEPS in this direction.
Radiation tolerance of small-sized CsI (Tl) crystals coupled to silicon photodiodes was studied by using protons. Irradiations up to the fluence of 10 12 protons/cm 2 were used. Degradation of light ...output by less than 5% was achieved.
Using the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M e+e− collider, we have measured the values of Ruds and R at seven points of the center-of-mass energy between 3.12 and 3.72 GeV. The total achieved accuracy is ...about or better than 3.3% at most of energy points with a systematic uncertainty of about 2.1%. At the moment it is the most accurate measurement of R(s) in this energy range.

In June 2012 a FARICH prototype from Philips Digital Photon Counting (PDPC) based on a photon camera with dimensions of 200200 mm has been tested at CERN. Remarkable particle separation has been ...achieved with a 4-layer aerogel sample: the pi /K separation at a 6 GeV/c momentum is 3.5 sigma , the mu / pi mu / pi separation is 5.3 sigma at 1 GeV/c. The analysis of the data has shown that the main contribution to the accuracy of the ring radius measurement comes from aerogel. The development of focusing aerogels is proceeding in two main directions: tuning of production technology of multilayer blocks and development of a new production method with continuous density (refractive index) gradient along the block depth. The beam test was carried out in December 2012-January 2013 at the electron beam test facility at the VEPP-4 M e super(+)e super(-) collider. The goal of this test was to measure different single layer and focusing aerogel samples, both multilayer and gradient. Aerogel samples were tested with a PDPC FARICH prototype. A part of DPC SPADs in each pixel was disabled to form an active area of 11 mm super(2). The collected data proved that gradient aerogel samples focus Cherenkov light.

We present the analysis of all KEDR data on the determination of J/ψ and ψ(2S) masses. The data comprise six scans of J/ψ and seven scans of ψ(2S) which were performed at the VEPP-4M e+e− collider in ...2002–2008. The beam energy was determined using the resonance depolarization method. The detector and accelerator conditions during scans were very different that increases the reliability of the averaged results. The analysis accounts for partial correlations of systematic uncertainties on the masses. The following mass values were obtained:MJ/ψ=3096.900±0.002±0.006 MeV,Mψ(2S)=3686.099±0.004±0.009 MeV. These results supersede our previous measurements published in 2003 and 2012.

Facility of the extracted beams of electrons and gammas based on the e super(+)e super(-) VEPP-4M collider is described. This installation is designed to test prototype of detectors for HEP projects. ...Design parameters of the extracted electron beam are the following: intensity is not less than 50 Hz, energy range is from 0.1 GeV to 3.0 GeV and energy resolution is about 2-3%. The gamma energy range is from 0.05 GeV to 4.0 GeV with an accuracy of 0.5% of energy. The designed intensity of the gamma beam is about 1000 Hz.
