How do infants learn the sounds of their native language when there are many simultaneous sounds competing for their attention? Adults and children detect when speech sounds change in complex scenes ...better than when other sounds change. We examined whether infants have similar biases to detect when human speech changes better than nonspeech sounds including musical instruments, water, and animal calls in complex auditory scenes. We used a change deafness paradigm to examine whether 5-month-olds' change detection is biased toward certain sounds within high-level categories (e.g., biological or generated by humans) or whether change detection depends on low-level salient physical features such that detection is better for sounds with more distinct acoustic properties, such as water. In Experiment 1, 5-month-olds showed some evidence for detecting speech and music changes better than no change trials. In Experiment 2, when speech and music were compared separately with animal and water sounds, infants detected when speech and water changed, but not when music changed across scenes. Infants' change detection is both biased for certain sound categories, as they detected small speech changes better than other sounds, and affected by the size of the acoustic change, similar to young infants' attentional priorities in complex visual scenes. By 5 months, infants show some preferential processing of speech changes in complex auditory environments, which could help bootstrap the language learning process.
Music is often described in the laboratory and in the classroom as a beneficial tool for memory encoding and retention, with a particularly strong effect when words are sung to familiar compared to ...unfamiliar melodies. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this memory benefit, especially for benefits related to familiar music are not well understood. The current study examined whether neural tracking of the slow syllable rhythms of speech and song is modulated by melody familiarity. Participants became familiar with twelve novel melodies over four days prior to MEG testing. Neural tracking of the same utterances spoken and sung revealed greater cerebro-acoustic phase coherence for sung compared to spoken utterances, but did not show an effect of familiar melody when stimuli were grouped by their assigned (trained) familiarity. However, when participant's subjective ratings of perceived familiarity were used to group stimuli, a large effect of familiarity was observed. This effect was not specific to song, as it was observed in both sung and spoken utterances. Exploratory analyses revealed some in-session learning of unfamiliar and spoken utterances, with increased neural tracking for untrained stimuli by the end of the MEG testing session. Our results indicate that top-down factors like familiarity are strong modulators of neural tracking for music and language. Participants’ neural tracking was related to their perception of familiarity, which was likely driven by a combination of effects from repeated listening, stimulus-specific melodic simplicity, and individual differences. Beyond simply the acoustic features of music, top-down factors built into the music listening experience, like repetition and familiarity, play a large role in the way we attend to and encode information presented in a musical context.
Summary Objective Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is an alleged important cytokine in osteoarthritis (OA), although the exact contribution of IL-1 to joint destruction remains unclear. Here we investigated the ...involvement of IL-1α and IL-1β in joint pathology during collagenase-induced OA (CiOA). Methods CiOA was induced in WT and IL-1αβ-/- mice. Additionally, IL-1 signaling was inhibited in WT mice with CiOA using osmotic pumps containing IL-1RA. Joint pathology was assessed using histology. Activity of cartilage-degrading enzymes was determined using antibodies against aggrecan neo-epitopes VDIPEN and NITEGE. Synovial gene expression was analyzed using qRT-PCR. Serum protein levels were measured with Luminex or ELISA. Results Synovial IL-1β expression was strongly elevated 7 days after induction of CiOA in WT mice but decreased afterwards, whereas S100A8/A9, previously described to aggravate OA, remained elevated for 21 days. Remarkably, synovial inflammation was comparable between WT and IL-1αβ-/- mice on day 7 of CiOA. In line, synovial mRNA expression of genes involved in IL-1 signaling and inflammatory mediators was comparable between WT and IL-1αβ-/- mice, and serum levels for KC/IL-6/S100A8/S100A9/IL-10 were equal. Synovial MMP/aggrecanase expression and activity in cartilage was not different in WT and IL-1αβ-/- mice on day 7 of CiOA. Cartilage destruction on day 42 was not different between WT and IL-1αβ-/- mice, which was supported by our finding that IL-1RA treatment in WT mice with CiOA did not alter joint destruction. Conclusions IL-1α and IL-1β are not involved in synovial inflammation and cartilage destruction during CiOA, implicating that other mediators are responsible for the joint damage.
We propose a framework based on evolutionary principles and the theory of enactive cognition ("being by doing"), that addresses the foundation of key results and central questions of soundscape ...research. We hypothesize that the two main descriptors (measures of how people perceive the acoustic environment) of soundscape appraisal ('pleasantness' and 'eventfulness'), reflect evolutionarily old motivational and affective systems that promote survival through preferences for certain environments and avoidance of others. Survival is aimed at ending or avoiding existential threats and protecting viability in a deficient environment. On the other hand, flourishing occurs whenever survival is not an immediate concern and aims to improve the agent's viability and by co-creating ever better conditions for existence. As such, survival is experienced as unpleasant, and deals with immediate problems to be ended or avoided, while flourishing is enjoyable, and therefore to be aimed for and maintained. Therefore, the simplest, safety-relevant meaning attributable to soundscapes (audible safety) should be key to understanding soundscape appraisal. To strengthen this, we show that the auditory nervous system is intimately connected to the parts of our brains associated with arousal and emotions. Furthermore, our theory demonstrates that 'complexity' and 'affordance content' of the perceived environment are important underlying soundscape indicators (measures used to predict the value of a soundscape descriptor). Consideration of these indicators allows the same soundscape to be viewed from a second perspective; one driven more by meaning attribution characteristics than merely emotional appraisal. The synthesis of both perspectives of the same person-environment interaction thus consolidates the affective, informational, and even the activity related perspectives on soundscape appraisal. Furthermore, we hypothesize that our current habitats are not well matched to our, evolutionarily old, auditory warning systems, and that we consequently have difficulty establishing audible safety. This leads to more negative and aroused moods and emotions, with stress-related symptoms as a result.
Background Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation (PFR) is effective in a selection of patients with low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) after rectal cancer surgery. This study aimed to identify barriers and ...enablers to prepare for successful implementation into clinical practice. Methods A qualitative study was performed, guided by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR). Individual interviews (n = 27) and two focus groups were conducted to synthesize the perspectives of rectal cancer patients, pelvic floor (PF) physiotherapists, and medical experts. Results Barriers were found to be the absence of guidelines about LARS treatment, underdeveloped network care, suboptimal patient information, and expectation management upfront to PFR. Financial status is frequently a barrier because insurance companies do not always reimburse PFR. Enablers were the current level of evidence for PFR, the positive relationship between patients and PF physiotherapists, and the level of self-motivation by patients. Conclusion The factors identified in our study play a crucial role in ensuring a successful implementation of PFR after rectal cancer surgery.

We report on high-resolution optical spectroscopy of interacting bosonic 174Yb atoms in deep optical lattices with negligible tunneling. We prepare Mott insulator phases with singly- and ...doubly-occupied isolated sites and probe the atoms using an ultra-narrow 'clock' transition. Atoms in singly-occupied sites undergo long-lived Rabi oscillations. Atoms in doubly-occupied sites are strongly affected by interatomic interactions, and we measure their inelastic decay rates and energy shifts. We deduce from these measurements all relevant collisional parameters involving both clock states, in particular the intra- and inter-state scattering lengths.
High rates of potentially pathogenic bacteria and respiratory viruses can be detected in the upper respiratory tract of healthy children. Investigating presence of and associations between these ...pathogens in healthy individuals is still a rather unexplored field of research, but may have implications for interpreting findings during disease.
We selected 986 nasopharyngeal samples from 433 6- to 24-month-old healthy children that had participated in a randomized controlled trial. We determined the presence of 20 common respiratory viruses using real-time PCR. Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis and Staphylococcus aureus were identified by conventional culture methods. Information on risk factors was obtained by questionnaires. We performed multivariate logistic regression analyses followed by partial correlation analysis to identify the overall pattern of associations. S. pneumoniae colonization was positively associated with the presence of H. influenzae (adjusted odds ratio 1.60, 95% confidence interval 1.18-2.16), M. catarrhalis (1.78, 1.29-2.47), human rhinoviruses (1.63, 1.19-2.22) and enteroviruses (1.97, 1.26-3.10), and negatively associated with S. aureus presence (0.59, 0.35-0.98). H. influenzae was positively associated with human rhinoviruses (1.63, 1.22-2.18) and respiratory syncytial viruses (2.78, 1.06-7.28). M. catarrhalis colonization was positively associated with coronaviruses (1.99, 1.01-3.93) and adenoviruses (3.69, 1.29-10.56), and negatively with S. aureus carriage (0.42, 0.25-0.69). We observed a strong positive association between S. aureus and influenza viruses (4.87, 1.59-14.89). In addition, human rhinoviruses and enteroviruses were positively correlated (2.40, 1.66-3.47), as were enteroviruses and human bocavirus, WU polyomavirus, parainfluenza viruses, and human parechovirus. A negative association was observed between human rhinoviruses and coronaviruses.
Our data revealed high viral and bacterial prevalence rates and distinct bacterial-bacterial, viral-bacterial and viral-viral associations in healthy children, hinting towards the complexity and potential dynamics of microbial communities in the upper respiratory tract. This warrants careful consideration when associating microbial presence with specific respiratory diseases.

We directly observe, using an interferometric approach, all of the topological invariants of finite-length Fibonacci chains in their diffraction pattern.
