A 67-year-old Dutch woman presented with neurological symptoms of several months duration. MRI scans of the brain showed intracerebral lesions. Brain biopsy revealed granulomatous inflammation and ...remnants of worm eggs. Eggs of Schistosoma mansoni were found in the stools and serological tests were positive for Schistosoma. From additional history taking it became clear that the patient contracted schistosomiasis when visiting Brazil several years before. She was treated with praziquantel and corticosteroids. Neuroschistosomiasis is a rare but severe complication of Schistosoma infection. This diagnosis should be considered in patients that travelled to or originate from endemic schistosomiasis areas.
A search for a diffuse flux of astrophysical muon neutrinos, using data collected by the ANTARES neutrino
telescope is presented. A (0.83 × 2π) sr sky was monitored for a total of 334 days of ...equivalent live
time. The searched signal corresponds to an excess of events, produced by astrophysical sources, over the
expected atmospheric neutrino background. The observed number of events is found compatible with the
background expectation. Assuming an E−2 flux spectrum, a 90% c.l. upper limit on the diffuse νμ flux
of E2Φ90% = 5.3 × 10−8 GeVcm−2 s−1 sr−1 in the energy range 20 TeV–2.5 PeV is obtained. Other signal
models with different energy spectra are also tested and some rejected.

A possible function of intonation is to clarify textual structure, eg, indicate that a sentence is likely to be the last in a sequence of statements in a discourse unit. The perception of melodic ...cues to "finality" was investigated in listening experiments performed with short sentences, whose intonation varied three ways: contour type (with or without end rise), register (high or low), & range (narrow or wide). Testing was by pairwise-comparison & absolute-rating (N = 23). A linear least-squares estimation method revealed that in both tests finality judgments could be influenced significantly by the three variables; moreover, an interaction could be observed between contour type & register. 1 Table, 4 Figures, 9 References. (For Part I, see LLBA 18/3, 8403991.) Secondary school children (N = 59) participated in an experiment in which they were asked to study 3 English texts. About 50% of the Ss could listen to the ...spoken version of texts by using a lang-laboratory tape recorder. The other Ss used a speech-output system, called the talking book, which allowed a much easier access to the spoken text. The Ss using the talking book could choose to listen to entire segments of texts or to individual words spoken in isolation or extracted from running speech. Only 50% of the Ss using each apparatus were provided with a written copy of the texts. Various tests were given before, during, & after the 3 learning sessions. The Ss using the talking book did slightly better on almost all the performance tests. Contrary to expectations, the results of the performance tests were not related to motivational or personality factors such as field dependence. 4 References. HA
