A search for cosmic neutrino sources using the data collected with the ANTARES neutrino telescope between early 2007 and the end of 2015 is performed. For the first time, all neutrino ...interactions-charged- and neutral-current interactions of all flavors-are considered in a search for point-like sources with the ANTARES detector. In previous analyses, only muon neutrino charged-current interactions were used. This is achieved by using a novel reconstruction algorithm for shower-like events in addition to the standard muon track reconstruction. The shower channel contributes about 23% of all signal events for an E−2 energy spectrum. No significant excess over background is found. The most signal-like cluster of events is located at (α,δ)=(343.8°,23.5°) with a significance of 1.9σ. The neutrino flux sensitivity of the search is about E2dΦ/dE=6×10−9 GeV cm−2 s−1 for declinations from −90° up to −42°, and below 10−8 GeV cm−2 s−1 for declinations up to 5°. The directions of 106 source candidates and 13 muon track events from the IceCube high-energy sample events are investigated for a possible neutrino signal and upper limits on the signal flux are determined.
Pork and pork products are recognised as vehicles of Salmonella Typhimurium infection in humans. Seaweed-derived polysaccharides (SWE) and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) have shown to exhibit ...antimicrobial, prebiotic and immunomodulatory activity. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of dietary GOS and SWE supplementation on reducing S. Typhimurium numbers and intestinal inflammation in vivo. In total, 30 pigs (n=10/treatment, BW 30.9 kg) were randomly assigned to three dietary treatments: (1) basal diet; (2) basal diet+2.5 g GOS/kg diet; (3) basal diet+SWE (containing 180 mg laminarin/kg diet+340 mg fucoidan/kg diet). Following an 11-day dietary adaptation period, pigs were orally challenged with 108 colony-forming units/ml S. Typhimurium (day 0). Pigs remained on their diets for a further 17 days and were then sacrificed for sample collection. The SWE supplementation did not affect S. Typhimurium numbers on days 2 and 4 post-challenge but reduced S. Typhimurium numbers in faecal samples collected day 7 post-challenge (-0.80 log gene copy numbers (GCN)/g faeces) and in caecal and colonic digesta (-0.62 and -0.98 log GCN/g digesta, respectively; P<0.05) compared with the control treatment. Lactobacillus numbers were increased in caecal and colonic digesta after GOS supplementation (+0.70 and +0.35 log GCN/g digesta, respectively; P<0.05). In colonic tissue, both GOS and SWE supplementation resulted in reduced messenger RNA expression levels of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-22, tumour necrosis factor-α and regenerating islet-derived protein 3-γ (P<0.05). It can be concluded that dietary supplementation of SWE reduced faecal and intestinal S. Typhimurium numbers compared with the basal diet, whereas dietary GOS supplementation increased Lactobacillus numbers in caecal and colonic digesta but did not affect S. Typhimurium numbers. Supplementation of GOS and SWE reduced the gene expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in colonic tissue of pigs after the experimental S. Typhimurium challenge.
Summary
Three experiments were conducted to investigate the interaction between zinc methionine (ZnM) and laminarin (LAM) on piglet growth performance and intestinal health post‐weaning. Experiment 1 ...was designed as 2 × 2 factorial with four treatments n = 8, weaning age (WA) 24 days, live weight (LW) 7.15 kg: (i) basal diet (BD); (ii) BD + 500 mg/kg ZnM; (iii) BD + 300 mg/kg LAM; and (iv) BD + 500 mg/kg ZnM + 300 mg/kg LAM. There was an interaction (p < 0.05) between LAM and ZnM. Pigs that were offered the LAM diet had a similar performance to the BD. However, when combining LAM with ZnM, pigs had reduced average daily gain (ADG), gain‐to‐feed ratio (G:F) and LW at slaughter at day 8 post‐weaning compared to the ZnM. Both LAM and ZnM improved the small intestinal morphology of the pigs at day 8 post‐weaning. Experiment 2 was designed as 2 × 2 factorial with four dietary treatments (n = 9, WA 24 days, LW 7.32 kg): (i) BD; (ii) BD + 500 mg/kg ZnM; (iii) BD + 175 mg/kg LAM; and (iv) BD + 500 mg/kg ZnM + 175 mg/kg LAM. The ADG and average daily feed intake were improved between day 0 and 31 PW when pigs were offered a LAM diet (p < 0.01). Faecal scores were reduced between day 0 and day 31 post‐weaning with ZnM (p < 0.001). Experiment 3 consisted of four dietary treatments (n = 10, WA 24 days, LW 7.32 kg): (i) BD; (ii) BD + 3300 mg/kg zinc oxide (ZnO); (iii) BD + 500 mg/kg ZnM; and (iv) BD + 175 mg/kg LAM. Pigs that were offered the ZnO diet had an increased ADG compared to the BD or ZnM diets (p < 0.01). Pigs that were offered the LAM diet had increased ADG compared to the ZnM diet (p < 0.05). Faecal scores were reduced between day 0 and day 31 PW with ZnM or ZnO supplementation (p < 0.001). In conclusion, the inclusion of 175 mg/kg LAM and ZnO improved ADG while both ZnO and ZnM reduced the faecal scores post‐weaning.
Abstract S100B is a prognostic factor for melanoma as elevated levels correlate with disease progression and poor outcome. We determined its prognostic value based on updated information using serial ...determinations in stage IIb/III melanoma patients. 211 Patients who participated in the EORTC 18952 trial, evaluating efficacy of adjuvant intermediate doses of interferon α2b (IFN) versus observation, entered a corollary study. Over a period of 36 months, 918 serum samples were collected. The Cox time-dependent model was used to assess prognostic value of the latest (most recent) S100B determination. At first measurement, 178 patients had S100B values <0.2 μg/l and 33 ⩾ 0.2 μg/l. Within the first group, 61 patients had, later on, an increased value of S100B (⩾0.2 μg/l). An initial increased value of S100B, or during follow-up, was associated with worse distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS); hazard ratio (HR) of S100B ⩾ 0.2 versus S100B < 0.2 was 5.57 (95% confidence interval (CI) 3.81–8.16), P < 0.0001, after adjustment for stage, number of lymph nodes and sex. In stage IIb patients, the HR adjusted for sex was 2.14 (95% CI 0.71, 6.42), whereas in stage III, the HR adjusted for stage, number of lymph nodes and sex was 6.76 (95% CI 4.50–10.16). Similar results were observed regarding overall survival (OS). Serial determination of S100B in stage IIb–III melanoma is a strong independent prognostic marker, even stronger compared to stage and number of positive lymph nodes. The prognostic impact of S100B ⩾ 0.2 μg/l is more pronounced in stage III disease compared with stage IIb.
The ANTARES detector is an undersea neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. The search for pointlike neutrino sources is one of the main goals of the ANTARES telescope, requiring a reliable ...method to evaluate the detector angular resolution and pointing accuracy. This work describes the study of the Sun "shadow" effect with the ANTARES detector. The shadow is the deficit in the atmospheric muon flux in the direction of the Sun caused by the absorption of the primary cosmic rays. This analysis is based on the data collected between 2008 and 2017 by the ANTARES telescope. The observed statistical significance of the Sun shadow detection is 3.7σ, with an estimated angular resolution of 0.59° ± 0.10° for downward-going muons. The pointing accuracy is found to be consistent with the expectations and no evidence of systematic pointing shifts is observed.
Hypoxia and edema are frequent and serious complications of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Therefore, we examined the effects of hypoxia on edema formation after moderate lateral fluid percussion ...(LFP) injury using NMR diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were separated into four groups: sham uninjured (S), hypoxia alone (H), trauma alone (T), and trauma and hypoxia (TH). Animals in Groups T and TH received LFP brain injury, with Groups H and TH undergoing 30 min of moderately severe hypoxia (FiO2 = 0.11) immediately after surgery or TBI (respectively). DWIs were obtained at 2, 4, and 24 h and at 1 week post injury, and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps were constructed. Animals in Groups T and TH showed an early decrease (p < 0.001) in ADC values in the cortex ipsilateral to TBI 4 hr post injury, followed by elevated ADCs 1 week later (p < 0.05). No significant differences in ADC values were seen between T and TH groups in the ipsilateral cortex. In contrast, the ipsilateral hippocampus for Group TH showed only increasing ADC values. This hyperintensity in the ADC map began at 2 h after TBI, was significant by 24 h (p < 0.05), and reached a maximum at 1 week. This hyperintensity was not observed in Group T. Histopathology seen in TBI animals corresponded well with the pathology observed with MRI. Midline shifts reflecting edema were only observed in TBI animals with little difference between normoxic (T) and hypoxic animals (TH). In sum, this study demonstrates that the development and extent of brain edema following TBI can be examined in vivo in rats using DWI technology. TBI resulted in an early decrease in ADC values indicating cytotoxic edema in the cortex that was followed at 1 week by an increase in the ADC that was associated with decreased tissue cellularity. Histopathology corresponded well to the regions of brain injury and edema visualized by T2 and DWI procedures. Overall, the addition of hypoxia to brain injury resulted in a small increase in the magnitude of edema in hippocampus and cortex over that seen with trauma alone.
Waterpipe (hookah) smoking is popular; in Dutch surveys, 26% of the respondents have smoked a waterpipe at least once. However, waterpipe smoking is not without risk. We present a series of carbon ...monoxide (CO) poisonings after waterpipe smoking and discuss the etiology and treatment of CO intoxication after waterpipe smoking.
We present three patients who presented with syncopial episodes and a variety of other neurological and circulatory symptoms after smoking a waterpipe. All patients had significantly elevated carboxyhaemoglobin levels (26%, 19% and 26%). Patients were treated with oxygen, following Dutch guidelines; one patient was admitted for eight hours of oxygen therapy. The other two patients were observed shortly, diverging from the guidelines because symptoms passed and the carboxyhaemoglobin normalised.
Reviewing combustion chemistry, the formation of CO is a logical consequence of using burning coals as a heat source. This is due to CO2 reduction with carbon. This chemical process has not previously been related to waterpipe smoking. Dutch guidelines advise eight hours of oxygen therapy. The research this guideline is based on, justifies therapy directed at symptom relief and carboxyhaemoglobin normalisation. This strategy may prevent unnecessary hospital admissions and exposure to high-dose oxygen.
We described three cases of CO intoxication after waterpipe smoking and argue why this may not be an incidental finding. Greater awareness of this risk is urgently needed. We conclude that the literature does not firmly support a fixed treatment duration.
Abstract Melanoma patients with clinically evident regional lymph node metastases are treated with therapeutic lymph node dissections (TLNDs). The aim of this study was to evaluate morbidity and ...mortality following TLND in our institution. Moreover, disease-free (DFS) and overall (OS) survival were evaluated and factors that influence prognosis after TLND were assessed. Between 1982 and 2005, 236 patients underwent a TLND. Patients, who received a palliative LND or a sentinel node procedure, were not included. The median Breslow thickness was 2.4 mm. Ulceration was present in 23% of patients and unknown in 66%. 37 patients had unknown primary tumors. There were 129 ilio-inguinal, 50 axillary and 61 cervical dissections performed. 37% of the patients experienced at least one operation related complication. The most frequently seen complications were wound infections/necrosis and chronic lymph edema. Ilio-inguinal dissection patients experienced significantly more complications and a longer duration of hospitalization compared to axillary or cervical patients. The duration of hospitalization has been reduced in recent years from 12 to 5 days. The mean follow-up was 29 months. Kaplan–Meier estimated 5-year regional control was 79%, 5-year DFS was 19% and 5-year OS was 26%. The number of positive lymph nodes, the site of the primary tumor and extra capsular extension (ECE) were independent prognostic factors for DFS and only site and ECE for OS. In conclusion, TLND for stage III melanoma is accompanied with considerable short-term complications, and can achieve regional control and potential curation in approximately one in every four patients.
A search for muon neutrinos originating from dark matter annihilations in the Sun is performed using the data recorded by the ANTARES neutrino telescope from 2007 to 2012. In order to obtain the best ...possible sensitivities to dark matter signals, an optimisation of the event selection criteria is performed taking into account the background of atmospheric muons, atmospheric neutrinos and the energy spectra of the expected neutrino signals. No significant excess over the background is observed and 90% C.L. upper limits on the neutrino flux, the spin-dependent and spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross-sections are derived for WIMP masses ranging from 50 GeV to 5 TeV for the annihilation channels WIMP+WIMP→bb¯,W+W− and τ+τ−.
