One in 4 Americans >40 years of age takes a statin to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and other complications of atherosclerotic disease. The most effective statins produce ...a mean reduction in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol of 55% to 60% at the maximum dosage, and 6 of the 7 marketed statins are available in generic form, which makes them affordable for most patients. Primarily using data from randomized controlled trials, supplemented with observational data where necessary, this scientific statement provides a comprehensive review of statin safety and tolerability. The review covers the general patient population, as well as demographic subgroups, including the elderly, children, pregnant women, East Asians, and patients with specific conditions such as chronic disease of the kidney and liver, human immunodeficiency viral infection, and organ transplants. The risk of statin-induced serious muscle injury, including rhabdomyolysis, is <0.1%, and the risk of serious hepatotoxicity is ≈0.001%. The risk of statin-induced newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus is ≈0.2% per year of treatment, depending on the underlying risk of diabetes mellitus in the population studied. In patients with cerebrovascular disease, statins possibly increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke; however, they clearly produce a greater reduction in the risk of atherothrombotic stroke and thus total stroke, as well as other cardiovascular events. There is no convincing evidence for a causal relationship between statins and cancer, cataracts, cognitive dysfunction, peripheral neuropathy, erectile dysfunction, or tendonitis. In US clinical practices, roughly 10% of patients stop taking a statin because of subjective complaints, most commonly muscle symptoms without raised creatine kinase. In contrast, in randomized clinical trials, the difference in the incidence of muscle symptoms without significantly raised creatinine kinase in statin-treated compared with placebo-treated participants is <1%, and it is even smaller (0.1%) for patients who discontinued treatment because of such muscle symptoms. This suggests that muscle symptoms are usually not caused by pharmacological effects of the statin. Restarting statin therapy in these patients can be challenging, but it is important, especially in patients at high risk of cardiovascular events, for whom prevention of these events is a priority. Overall, in patients for whom statin treatment is recommended by current guidelines, the benefits greatly outweigh the risks.
Team cognition has been identified as a critical component of team performance and decision-making. However, theory and research in this domain continues to remain largely static; articulation and ...examination of the dynamic processes through which collectively held knowledge emerges from the individual- to the team-level is lacking. To address this gap, we advance and systematically evaluate a process-oriented theory of team knowledge emergence. First, we summarize the core concepts and dynamic mechanisms that underlie team knowledge-building and represent our theory of team knowledge emergence (Step 1). We then translate this narrative theory into a formal computational model that provides an explicit specification of how these core concepts and mechanisms interact to produce emergent team knowledge (Step 2). The computational model is next instantiated into an agent-based simulation to explore how the key generative process mechanisms described in our theory contribute to improved knowledge emergence in teams (Step 3). Results from the simulations demonstrate that agent teams generate collectively shared knowledge more effectively when members are capable of processing information more efficiently and when teams follow communication strategies that promote equal rates of information sharing across members. Lastly, we conduct an empirical experiment with real teams participating in a collective knowledge-building task to verify that promoting these processes in human teams also leads to improved team knowledge emergence (Step 4). Discussion focuses on implications of the theory for examining team cognition processes and dynamics as well as directions for future research.
Dominance analysis (DA) has been established as a useful tool for practitioners and researchers to identify the relative importance of predictors in a linear regression. This article examines the ...joint impact of two common and pervasive artifacts-sampling error variance and measurement unreliability-on the accuracy of DA. We present Monte Carlo simulations that detail the decrease in the accuracy of DA in the presence of these artifacts, highlighting the practical extent of the inferential mistakes that can be made. Then, we detail and provide a user-friendly program in R (R Core Team, 2017) for estimating the effects of sampling error variance and unreliability on DA. Finally, by way of a detailed example, we provide specific recommendations for how researchers and practitioners should more appropriately interpret and report results of DA.

Derived parameters are applied within the surfactant conservation Curvature Enhanced Accelerator Coverage model to simulate the filling of high aspect ratio trenches. It is observed that Bi adsorption accelerates the Au deposition rate with a non-linear dependence occurring around a critical coverage. Further, the impact of electrolyte composition is such that gradients of

derived from reduction of
during deposition accentuate deposition farther from the feature opening. These factors and surface area reduction at the bottoms of filling features localize active deposition to feature bottoms. Ultimately, weakening of the concentration gradients and associated kinetics as bottom-up feature filling progresses reduces the Bi coverage on the growth front below the critical value and bottom-up growth terminates. Good agreement is observed with key experimental features including the incubation period of conformal deposition, transition to bottom-up growth, subsequent bottom-up filling and finally self-passivation as the growth front nears the field.
Copper electrodeposition processes for filling metallized through-hole (TH) and through-silicon vias (TSV) depend on spatially selective breakdown of a co-adsorbed polyether-chloride adlayer within ...the recessed surface features. In this work, a co-adsorption-dependent suppression model that has previously captured experimental observations of localized Cu deposition in TSV is used to explore filling of TH features. Simulations of potentiodynamic and galvanostatic TH filling are presented. An appropriate applied potential or current localizes deposition to the middle of the TH. Subsequent deposition proceeds most rapidly in the radial direction leading to sidewall impingement at the via center creating two blind vias. The growth front then evolves primarily toward the two via openings to completely fill the TH in a manner analogous to TSV filling. Applied potentials, or currents, that are overly reducing result in metal ion depletion within the via and void formation. Simulations in larger TH features (i.e., diameter = 85 μm instead of 10 μm) indicate that lateral diffusional gradients within the via can lead to fluctuations between active and passive deposition along the metal/electrolyte interface.
The recent discovery of more than a thousand planets outside our Solar System, together with the significant push to achieve inertially confined fusion in the laboratory, has prompted a renewed ...interest in how dense matter behaves at millions to billions of atmospheres of pressure. The theoretical description of such electron-degenerate matter has matured since the early quantum statistical model of Thomas and Fermi, and now suggests that new complexities can emerge at pressures where core electrons (not only valence electrons) influence the structure and bonding of matter. Recent developments in shock-free dynamic (ramp) compression now allow laboratory access to this dense matter regime. Here we describe ramp-compression measurements for diamond, achieving 3.7-fold compression at a peak pressure of 5 terapascals (equivalent to 50 million atmospheres). These equation-of-state data can now be compared to first-principles density functional calculations and theories long used to describe matter present in the interiors of giant planets, in stars, and in inertial-confinement fusion experiments. Our data also provide new constraints on mass-radius relationships for carbon-rich planets.

One of the key challenges in developing quantum networks is to generate single photons with high brightness, purity, and long temporal coherence. Semiconductor quantum dots potentially satisfy these ...requirements; however, due to imperfections in the surrounding material, the coherence generally degrades with increasing excitation power yielding a broader emission spectrum. Here we overcome this power-broadening regime and demonstrate an enhanced coherence at exciton saturation where the detected count rates are highest. We detect single-photon count rates of 460 000 counts per second under pulsed laser excitation while maintaining a single-photon purity greater than 99%. Importantly, the enhanced coherence is attained with quantum dots in ultraclean wurtzite InP nanowires, where the surrounding charge traps are filled by exciting above the wurtzite InP nanowire band gap. By raising the excitation intensity, the number of possible charge configurations in the quantum dot environment is reduced, resulting in a narrower emission spectrum. Via Monte Carlo simulations we explain the observed narrowing of the emission spectrum with increasing power. Cooling down the sample to 300 mK, we further enhance the single-photon coherence twofold as compared to operation at 4.5 K, resulting in a homogeneous coherence time, T2, of 1.2 ns, and two-photon interference visibility as high as 83% under strong temporal postselection (~5% without temporal postselection).
