The interactions enabled by the popular sites of the Web 2.0 are largely confined to the virtual world of the Internet, thus failing to engage people in relevant interactions with people, contents or ...resources in their physical environment. In this paper, we motivate the potential of automatically establishing sporadic social networks among people (acquaintances or strangers) who happen to be physically close to one another at a certain moment. We present the design of one platform intended to provide solutions from the lowest level of establishing ad-hoc connections among nearby mobile devices, up to the highest level of automatically identifying the most relevant pieces of information to deliver at any time. Specific scenarios are discussed considering vehicular environments, as well as the results from pilot experiments with a representative application.
We present the SPORANGIUM platform that deploys sporadic social networks (SSNs) among people who happen to be in a common place, by establishing ad-hoc connections over their respective mobile ...devices. The idea is to boost interactions among strangers who might share common interests in places like museums, theatres and stadiums, taking care of multiple concurrent flows of information and enabling added-value services to efficiently manage those contents. This paper describes the simulator we have developed to validate the SSN concept in one of the application scenarios of SPORANGIUM, dealing with tourism information on behalf of the participants in a bus tour.
The high mobility and variability of road traffic has hampered the design of efficient communication protocols and the deployment of new services in vehicular networks. Nevertheless, the ...newly-introduced notion of virtual mobile nodes (VMNs) has the potential to turn wireless ad hoc networks into more predictable environments, facing the significant challenges raised by the mobility of the (real) nodes. Several studies on the applicability and benefits of using VMNs in the realm of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) have been reported in the literature. However, they always consider simple scenarios of static (i.e. non-mobile) virtual nodes arranged in grids over a given area. In this paper, we present experiments with virtual nodes in the more specific realm of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), which allow us to explore alternative arrangements and new strategies of mobility for VMNs. We present the architecture of a simulation environment developed to assess these ideas, and discuss the settings and the results of preliminary experiments.
Human history is a mesh of interrelated facts that is normally presented in a simplistic way, which prevents from viewing the past as a shared, global experience. We build context-aware edutainment ...experiences that uncover associations among digital cultural resources to explain history in a holistic way.
Narrative is a gender form in which characters express themselves with no other limit than that imposed by the author himself. The purpose of the present research is the use of narrative as a means ...of better understanding the diverse situations faced by people within the immense framework of health and illness. It is within the boundaries of this context that the narrative and poetic work of Benedetti reveals its pedagogical and anthropological potential. Our present study takes advantage of the poet's narrative material as a vehicle with which one may interpret situations of health versus illness, where moods, sensations, feelings, expectancies, fears, hopes and knowledge all meet.
