The inner detector of the future Hyper-Kamiokande experiment will be instrumented with 40000 20" photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs). Two models of PMTs are considered: the R12860 from Hamamatsu Photonics ...(nominal option), and the GDB-6203 from North Night Vision Technology (alternative option). Both models show improved performances compared to the PMTs used in the currently running Super-Kamiokande experiment. We present here the measurements of the performance of the nominal and alternative option PMTs done in the context of the Hyper-Kamiokande project, as well as the first use of those new PMTs in a running experiment, and other on-going developments for their future use in the Hyper-Kamiokande detector.
Femtosecond time-resolved two-photon photoemission spectroscopy is utilized to determine the electronically excited states dynamics at the α-sexithiophene (6T)/Au(111) interface and within the 6T ...film. We found that a photoinduced transition between the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital is essential in order to observe exciton population, which occurs within 100 fs. In thin 6T films, the exciton exhibits a lifetime of 650 fs. On a time scale of 400 fs, an energetic stabilization is observed leading to the formation of a polaron or electron trapping at defect states. The lifetime of this state is 6.3 ps. Coverage-dependent measurements show that apart from the excited state decay within the film, a substrate-mediated relaxation channel is operative. The present study demonstrates that two-photon photoemission spectroscopy is a powerful tool to investigate the whole life cycle from creation to decay of excitons in an organic semiconductor.
Super-Kamiokande (SK) can search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) by detecting neutrinos produced from WIMP annihilations occurring inside the Sun. In this analysis, we include ...neutrino events with interaction vertices in the detector in addition to upward-going muons produced in the surrounding rock. Compared to the previous result, which used the upward-going muons only, the signal acceptances for light (few-GeV/c^{2}-200-GeV/c^{2}) WIMPs are significantly increased. We fit 3903 days of SK data to search for the contribution of neutrinos from WIMP annihilation in the Sun. We found no significant excess over expected atmospheric-neutrino background and the result is interpreted in terms of upper limits on WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering cross sections under different assumptions about the annihilation channel. We set the current best limits on the spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross section for WIMP masses below 200 GeV/c^{2} (at 10 GeV/c^{2}, 1.49×10^{-39} cm^{2} for χχ→bbover ¯ and 1.31×10^{-40} cm^{2} for χχ→τ^{+}τ^{-} annihilation channels), also ruling out some fraction of WIMP candidates with spin-independent coupling in the few-GeV/c^{2} mass range.
Using 5326 days of atmospheric neutrino data, a search for atmospheric tau neutrino appearance has been performed in the Super-Kamiokande experiment. Super-Kamiokande measures the tau normalization ...to be 1.47±0.32 under the assumption of normal neutrino hierarchy, relative to the expectation of unity with neutrino oscillation. The result excludes the hypothesis of no-tau appearance with a significance level of 4.6σ. The inclusive charged-current tau neutrino cross section averaged by the tau neutrino flux at Super-Kamiokande is measured to be (0.94±0.20)×10−38 cm2. The measurement is consistent with the Standard Model prediction, agreeing to within 1.5σ.
We report an indication that the elastic scattering rate of solar B8 neutrinos with electrons in the Super-Kamiokande detector is larger when the neutrinos pass through Earth during nighttime. We ...determine the day-night asymmetry, defined as the difference of the average day rate and average night rate divided by the average of those two rates, to be -3.2 ± 1.1(stat) ± 0.5(syst)%, which deviates from zero by 2.7 σ. Since the elastic scattering process is mostly sensitive to electron-flavored solar neutrinos, a nonzero day-night asymmetry implies that the flavor oscillations of solar neutrinos are affected by the presence of matter within the neutrinos' flight path. Super-Kamiokande's day-night asymmetry is consistent with neutrino oscillations for 4 × 10(-5) eV(2) ≤ Δm 2(21) ≤ 7 × 10(-5) eV(2) and large mixing values of θ12, at the 68% C.L.
Angle-resolved two-photon photoemission and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy are employed to derive the electronic structure of a subnanometer atomically precise ...quasi-one-dimensional graphene nanoribbon (GNR) on Au(111). We resolved occupied and unoccupied electronic bands including their dispersion and determined the band gap, which possesses an unexpectedly large value of 5.1 eV. Supported by density functional theory calculations for the idealized infinite polymer and finite size oligomers, an unoccupied nondispersive electronic state with an energetic position in the middle of the band gap of the GNR could be identified. This state resides at both ends of the ribbon (end state) and is only found in the finite sized systems, i.e., the oligomers.
Search results for nucleon decays p→e^{+}X, p→μ^{+}X, n→νγ (where X is an invisible, massless particle) as well as dinucleon decays np→e^{+}ν, np→μ^{+}ν, and np→τ^{+}ν in the Super-Kamiokande ...experiment are presented. Using single-ring data from an exposure of 273.4 kton·yr, a search for these decays yields a result consistent with no signal. Accordingly, lower limits on the partial lifetimes of τ_{p→e^{+}X}>7.9×10^{32} yr, τ_{p→μ^{+}X}>4.1×10^{32} yr, τ_{n→νγ}>5.5×10^{32} yr, τ_{np→e^{+}ν}>2.6×10^{32} yr, τ_{np→μ^{+}ν}>2.2×10^{32} yr, and τ_{np→τ^{+}ν}>2.9×10^{31} yr at a 90% confidence level are obtained. Some of these searches are novel.
Inverted CCAAT box-binding protein of 90 kDa (ICBP90) is over-expressed in several types of cancer, including breast, prostate and lung cancers. In search for proteins that interact with the set and ...ring-associated (SRA) domain of ICBP90, we used the two-hybrid system and screened a placental cDNA library. Several clones coding for a new domain of DNMT1 were found. The interaction, between the ICBP90 SRA domain and the DNMT1 domain, has been confirmed with purified proteins by glutathione-S-transferase pull-down experiments. We checked whether ICBP90 and DNMT1 are present in the same macro-molecular complexes in Jurkat cells and immortalized human vascular smooth muscle cells (HVTs-SM1). Co-immunoprecipitation experiments showed that ICBP90 and DNMT1 are present in the same molecular complex, which was further confirmed by co-localization experiments as assessed by immunocytochemistry. Downregulation of ICBP90 and DNMT1 decreased VEGF gene expression, a major pro-angiogenic factor, whereas those of p16(INK4A) gene and RB1 gene were significantly enhanced. Together, these results indicate that DNMT1 and ICBP90 are involved in VEGF gene expression, possibly via an interaction of the SRA domain of ICBP90 with a novel domain of DNMT1 and an upregulation of p16(INK4A). They further suggest a new role of ICBP90 in the relationship between histone ubiquitination and DNA methylation in the context of tumoral angiogenesis and tumour suppressor genes silencing.
With recent suggestive physics results, compelling future physics opportunities, and the continued improvement of the J-PARC proton beam power, the T2K collaboration is proposing an extension of the ...T2K run from the currently approved full statistics of 7.8 × 1021 Protons-on-Target (POT) (expected by 2021) to 20 × 1021 POT (expected by 2027). The T2K collaboration also plans to increase the "effective" T2K Phase 2 statistics by improved analysis techniques and neutrino beamline hardware upgrades. The physics sensitivity of this extended run are shown, including the possibility of excluding sin δCP = 0 to 3σ or better in the case of maximal CP violation in the lepton sector. Improvements on the atmospheric neutrino oscillation parameter constraints will also be made by T2K Phase 2, where the final sensitivities depend on the true values of the oscillation parameters.
The trilepton nucleon decay modes p→e+νν and p→μ+νν violate |Δ(B-L)| by two units. Using data from a 273.4 kt yr exposure of Super-Kamiokande a search for these decays yields a fit consistent with no ...signal. Accordingly, lower limits on the partial lifetimes of τp→e+νν>1.7×10(32) years and τp→μ+νν>2.2×10(32) years at a 90% confidence level are obtained. These limits can constrain Grand Unified Theories which allow for such processes.
