In recent years school‐to‐school collaboration in the English context has been promoted by a myriad of policy initiatives. Many of these initiatives have been directed at structural reforms seeking ...to facilitate a 'self‐improving system' in which schools support one another to raise standards of teaching and learning and address educational inequality. Yet, at the same time, the English school system remains a deeply marketised and competitive arena while there are debates concerning the extent to which collaboration between schools can meaningfully facilitate educational improvement and equity. Taking these issues as a starting point, this paper reports on findings from a configurative review of the empirical evidence on school‐to‐school collaboration in England. Drawing on 46 peer‐reviewed empirical studies from 2000 onwards, the paper provides insight into the reasons why schools enter into collaborative arrangements and the conditions and factors that can facilitate and hinder such activity, as well as the possible benefits that can result from collaboration between schools. A number of weaknesses within the field are also identified. For example, there is a need for more conceptual and terminological clarity and a stronger theoretical basis for research in this area. We also argue that the field is deficient in respect of critical perspective and interpretation (of collaborative practice). Furthermore, research into school‐to‐school collaboration is lagging behind policy and practice, presenting a formidable challenge for a system increasingly underpinned by an expectation that schools will work in partnership with one another.
Recreational fishing mortality can have a major impact on coastal fish populations, bringing recreational fishers into conflict with commercial fisheries. This article reviews exclusion zones for ...commercial fishing, or ‘recreational fishing areas’ as a solution to the conflict between commercial and recreational fisheries. Recently designated recreational fishing areas in the state of Queensland, Australia are examined as a case-study. The goal of recreational fishing areas is to enhance recreational fishing and provide economic opportunities through charter fishing. However, recently designated recreational fishing areas in Queensland have not been thoroughly assessed for their social, economic and environmental impacts and they are not integrated within existing management frameworks for fisheries. The designation of recreational fishing areas is thus a shift away from evidence-based management in Queensland's fisheries and has likely occurred solely for political reasons – there are more voters in the recreational fishery than commercial fishery. In Queensland, excluding commercial fishing on its own is unlikely to result in long-term benefits to recreational fisheries because recreational harvest is a major component of fish harvest for some key species and there is no legislated limit to recreational harvest. Current political attention on recreational fishing areas provides an opportunity for fisheries managers, politicians, conservation groups and the public to discuss what is needed to manage sustainable coastal fisheries. In particular, recreational fishing areas need to be combined with efforts to enhance stewardship among recreational fishers if they are to be successful in the long-term.
There is a clear need for assays that can predict the risk of metastatic prostate cancer following curative procedures. Importantly these assays must be analytically robust in order to provide ...quality data for important clinical decisions. DNA microarray based gene expression assays measure several analytes simultaneously and can present specific challenges to analytical validation. This study describes the analytical validation of one such assay designed to predict metastatic recurrence in prostate cancer using primary formalin fixed paraffin embedded tumour material.
Accuracy was evaluated with a method comparison study between the assay development platform (Prostate Disease Specific Array) and an alternative platform (Xcel™ microarray) using 50 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded prostate cancer patient samples. An additional 70 samples were used to establish the assay reportable range. Determination of assay precision and sensitivity was performed on multiple technical replicates of three prostate cancer samples across multiple variables (operators, days, runs, reagent lots, and equipment) and RNA/cDNA inputs respectively using the appropriate linear mixed model.
The overall agreement between the development and alternative platform was 94.7% (95% confidence interval, 86.9-98.5%). The reportable range was determined to be 0.150 to 1.107 for core needle biopsy samples and - 0.214 to 0.844 for radical prostatectomy samples. From the precision study, the standard deviations for assay repeatability and reproducibility were 0.032 and 0.040 respectively. The sensitivity study demonstrated that a total RNA input and cDNA input of 50 ng and 3.5 μg respectively was conservative.
The Metastatic Assay was found to be highly reproducible and precise. In conclusion the studies demonstrated an acceptable analytical performance for the assay and support its potential use in the clinic.
As population growth and urbanization are steadily rising, the need for dependable flood estimation techniques is crucial. This study evaluates extreme flood events in select sub-basins of the Lower ...St. Johns River in Florida, USA. The study considers the effect of urbanization on the natural hydrologic processes and flood magnitudes in the watershed. Additionally, the effects of varying seasonality into the hydrologic modeling procedure are also investigated. This research focuses on determining the 10-, 25-, 50-, and 100-year return frequency flood flows in Julington Creek, Ortega River, and Pablo Creek of the Lower St. Johns River Basin in Florida, USA. The major findings of this research indicate that by implementing a range of flood estimation methods one can better describe the inherent uncertainty with traditional estimates. Also, the research showed that varying seasonality in the hydrologic modeling procedure does not result in vast differences in the resulting flood estimates. However, various land-use scenarios may produce simulated flood flows of greater magnitude—especially when a more urbanized land-use scenario is modeled.
•Viability of 2D-LC for analyses of aged plastic bonded explosives (PBX) is explored.•2D-LC method with RPLC in 1D and SEC in 2D using a comprehensive setup (LC × LC).•A simple sample preparation is ...proposed.•Various SEC and HPLC experimental parameters are explored for analysis of PBX 9501.•Demonstrated potential of LC × LC on a library standard and aged sample of PBX 9501.
The feasibility of measuring the aging and degradation of PBX 9501 via online two dimensional liquid chromatography (LC × LC) is investigated, and a preliminary instrumental setup and method is developed. Plastic-Bonded eXplosive (PBX) 9501 is nominally composed of 94.9 wt% HMX, 2.5 wt% Estane® 5703 (poly (ester urethane)), 2.5 wt% BDNPA/F (nitroplasticizer), 0.1 wt% Irganox 1010 and PBNA (N-phenyl-naphthylamine) at low concentrations. When exposed to various environmental conditions, PBX 9501 will degrade through different pathways. Because PBX 9501 is composed of both low molecular weight compounds (BDNPA/F, Irganox 1010, PBNA, and potential degradation products) and high molecular weight compounds (Estane® 5703), analysis is normally performed via two independent analyses. The low molecular weight species are analyzed via high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the high molecular weight species via size exclusion chromatography (SEC). While these individual techniques yield information about the aging of PBX 9501, the combination of HPLC and SEC (i.e. HPLC × SEC) can simplify and streamline the analyses while also providing additional chemical information. A simplified sample preparation method is proposed for LC × LC analysis. Various SEC columns and HPLC column selection, flow rate, and gradient ramps were investigated for their application of measuring aged PBX 9501. Finally, two LC × LC separations of a library standard of PBX 9501 and a sample of aged PBX 9501 are compared.
This is a case of a neonate with suspected duodenal atresia on prenatal imaging. However, distal bowel gas was identified postnatally on regular X-rays with a possible pyloric obstructing mass ...visualised on ultasound. No contrast was visualised passing through the stomach on fluoroscopic studies. Operative evaluation revealed an atypical asymmetric hypertrophic pylorus with exophytic lesions of ectopic glandular tissue. Longitudinal open pyloromyotomy was performed which relieved the gastric obstruction resulting in symptomatic relief without any anatomy altering procedure required.
Mangrove deforestation threatens to release large stores of carbon from soils that are vulnerable to oxidation. Carbon stored in deep soils is not measured in national carbon inventories. Thus, ...policies on emission reductions have likely underestimated the contribution of mangrove deforestation to national emissions. Here, we estimate that emissions from deforestation and degradation of mangroves in Mexico are 31 times greater than the values used to determine national emission reduction targets for the Paris Agreement. Thus, Mexico has vastly undervaluated the potential of mangrove protection to reduce its emissions. Accounting for carbon emissions from mangrove soils should greatly increase the priority of mangrove forests to receive funding for protection under carbon trading programs.
In contrast to an often-repeated and reductive story about the establishment of psychological research practices, the narrative of the field's methodological development is unfolding, contentious, ...and situated within a wide range of historical developments. Such dynamism is evident in the recent ascension of qualitative inquiry. A new generation of researchers, scholars, and instructors are embracing methodological pluralism and qualitative inquiry, but their expectations may be incompatible with existing curricular materials that are rooted in the historical legacy of the standard storyline. To assess the extent to which (and how) qualitative research was presented to readers, we conducted a summative content analysis of nine best-selling U.S.-based introductory research methods in psychology textbooks. We found that the coverage and treatment of qualitative research is varied, spotty, dependent on a problematic and pejorative framing, and incommensurate with contemporary methodological thinking and learning standards. The perpetuation of misleading and/or incoherent epistemic narratives and the minimal and/or absent presentation of qualitative inquiry are significant obstacles for the next generation of research methods instructors. The dearth of sufficiently inclusive methodological training materials poses a challenge for new teachers who recognize the need for a more sophisticated approach to science education-specifically within the field of psychology.
PBX 9404, composed of 94 wt% HMX (1,3,5,7-Tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazoctane), 3 wt% NC (nitrocellulose), 2.9 wt% CEF (tris(beta-chloroethyl) phosphate) and 0.1 wt% DPA (diphenylamine), has often been ...observed with a slight to entire blue discoloration of the manufactured prills. This blue discoloration has been observed since the formulation development of PBX 9404 in the late 1950s. In order to determine the source of the blue discoloration in PBX 9404, ultraviolet/visible (UV/Vis) absorbance of PBX 9404 and two potential candidates for the discoloration, p-nitrosodiphenylamine (p-NDPA) and N-nitrosodiphenylamine (N-NDPA) were evaluated. An absorbance band at 590 nm in PBX 9404 sample was attributed to the blue discoloration while p-NDPA and N-NPDA had different absorbance bands. Using the knowledge gained from the UV/Vis analysis, a semi-targeted approach using ultrahigh pressure liquid chromatography coupled to UV/Vis detector and quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-UV/Vis-QTOF) was implemented. Investigating the UHPLC-UV/Vis-QTOF chromatograms at a wavelength of 590 nm, a single compound was tentatively identified as being the source of the blue discoloration. Targeted tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) on the compound and subsequent analysis indicated that 4,4 -{4-(Phenylimino)-2,5-cyclohexadien-1-ylidenemethylene}bis(N-phenylaniline), also known as Spirit Blue Base, was the source of the blue discoloration, which was confirmed using a standard. Here, a theory on the formation of Spirit Blue Base in PBX 9404 involving DPA, nitric acid (HNO3) / nitrogen oxide(s) NOx, and formaldehyde is proposed.
Brush-on-brush structures are proposed as one method to overcome support effects in grafted polymers. Utilizing glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) grafted on polyethylene (PE) fibers using radiation-induced ...graft polymerization (RIGP) provides a hydrophilic surface on the hydrophobic PE. When integrated with atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), the grafting of acrylonitrile (AN) and hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) can be controlled and manipulated more easily than with RIGP. Poly(acrylonitrile)-co-poly(hydroxyethyl acrylate) chains were grown via ATRP on PE-GMA fibers to generate an adsorbent for the extraction of uranium from seawater. The prepared adsorbents in this study demonstrated promise (159.9 g-U/kg of adsorbent) in laboratory screening tests using a high uranium concentration brine and 1.24 g-U/kg of adsorbent in the filtered natural seawater in 21 days. The modest capacity in 21 days exceeds previous efforts to generate brush-on-brush adsorbents by ATRP while manipulating the apparent surface hydrophilicity of the trunk material (PE).
