Nondermatophyte molds are fungi found in soil and decaying plant debris and are generally considered to be uncommon or secondary pathogens of diseased nails. Prevalence rates of onychomycoses caused ...by nondermatophyte molds range between 1.45 percent and 17.60 percent. The most common nondermatophyte molds associated with nail disease are Scopulariopsis, Scytalidium, Fusarium, Aspergillus and Onychocola canadensis. Syncephalastrum racemosum, a nondermatophyte mold, belongs to the class Zygomycetae. Only one well-documented case of human disease attributed to this organism has been described. We describe a 45-year-old man with culture proven toenail onychomycosis due to Syncephalstrum racemosum.
The in vivo evaluation of toxicological and antifungal activity of the Mentha x piperita L. essential oils and menthol was made on 2-month-old male Wistar rats. We examined the therapeutic potency ...against experimentally induced dermatomycoses in rats using the most frequent dermatomycetes, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, T. rubrum, and T. tonsurans. The therapeutic efficacy of 1% solution of essential oil and menthol, as well as commercial preparation bifonazole, was evaluated. During the 36-day observation period, the oil-treated animals were cured completely.
Adsorption of antibodies against antigens expressed on the Candida albicans blastoconidia cell walls was standardized for the detection of antibodies to germ tubes by an indirect immunofluorescence ...test (IIFT). Sera from rabbits immunized with C. albicans bearing germ tubes, were diluted by two‐fold serial dilutions to obtain specimens 1 : 640–1 : 20 positive by IIFT. Different volumes of specimens were adsorbed with different amounts of whole, heat‐inactivated C. albicans blastoconidia. It was found that a 1 : 640 titre serum should be adsorbed at 30 μl by 50 mg cells, down to a 1 : 20 titre serum at 110 μl by 12.5 mg cells. Accurate detection of anti‐germ tube antibodies by IIFT depends on the semi‐quantitative relation between the positive titre of the specimen and the amount of blastoconidia used in adsorption.
The most common causative agents of dermatomycoses are fungi belonging to genders Trichophyton, Microsporum and Epidermophyton. Media mainly used for isolation of dermatophytes are mycobiotic agar, ...dermatophyte test medium Sabouraud agar (original formula or modification by Emmons) with or without antibiotics and cycloheximide. Peptones are the most important components of the media, which enable adequate reproductivity in identification of dermatophytes. Standard medium for isolation of dermatophytes is not produced in our country. The aim of the study was to create an optimal easily accessible and economic medium which enables isolation and identification of dermatophytes according to criteria for morphological diagnosis provided by identification guides. We examined 57 strains of Trichophyton, 24 of Microsporum and 5 of Epidermophyton floccosum (E. floccosum). Each strain was seeded on Sabouraud dextrose agar (Torlak Serbia and Montenegro), Sabouraud maltose agar (Torlak), two experimental modified Sabouraud dextrose agar media marked as SA-2 and SA-3 (Torlak) Sabouraud-Chloramp- henicole agar (Biomerieux, France) Sabouraud-Chloramphenicole agar (Himedia, India), Glucose-peptone agar (Himedia, India) and Sabouraud Emmons dextrose Agar with Chloramphenicole and Cycloheximide (Biolife, Italy). Colony morphology of Trichophyton mentagrophytes (T. mentagrophytes) was uni- form on all the media, while morphology of Trichophyton rubrum (T. rubrum) and Microsporum canis (M. canis) depended more on the media type. Colonies of E. floccosum were typical and uniform on all the media, as were the control species of Trichophyton schoenleinii (T. schoenleinii) and Trichophyton soudanense (T. soudanense). Experimental modified Sabouraud dextrose agar (Torlak) marked as SA-3 demonstrated the best results in identification of dermatophytes in this study.

The in vivo evaluation of antifungal activity of the Lavandula angustifolia essential oil was made on two-month old male Wister rats. We examined the therapeutic potency against experimentally ...induced dermatomycoses in rats, using the most frequent dermatomycetes, Trichophyton mentagrophytes. The therapeutic efficacy of 1% solution of essential oils as well as commercial preparation-bifonazole, was evaluated. During the 13-day observation period the oil-treated animals were cured completely.
Conducting this research, we wanted to explore the competence self-perception in gifted elementary school students and to compare different aspects of gifted and non-gifted children’s ...self-perception. In addition to this, we investigated gender differences as well as the correlation between self-perception and academic achievement.
The research sample comprised 62 participant, 31 gifted and 31 non-gifted children aged 10 to 15. A matched participant design was used and the controlling variables were: academic achievement in the current and previous grades, gender and a socio-economic status. All the participants were tested by two instruments: The Socio-Demographic instrument and the Self-Perception Profile for Children developed by Susan Harter (1985), which measures six aspects of self-perception (competencies): school competence, social competence, sports competence, physical competence, behavioral competence and general self-perception.
The results showed that the highest level of students’ competence was observed for the school competence aspect, then behavioral one, followed by general self- concept, while a lower level of physical and sports competence was reached.
Furthermore, there is a statistically significant correlation between most of the personal competence sub-scales, except between sports competence on the one hand, and school competence and behavioral competence, on the other hand. This implies that competence self- perception is the construct comprised of different interrelated aspects and if one shows a tendency for positive self-perception in one aspect; most probably that person will have positive self- perception in another as well.
No statistically significant differences were found between the gifted and the non-gifted children, which means that giftedness is not an important factor of self-perception. Also, gender differences were significant only among the gifted children where the boys perceived themselves as more competent in the social and physical aspects.
Summary
Previous TBC lesions, diabetes and use of corticosteriods are recognised as risk factors for developing long‐standing disease caused by Schizophyllum commune. In the case report presented in ...this work, S. commune was isolated from an inflamed bronchogenous cyst of previously immunocompetent patient. The isolated mould failed to sporulate and identification was achieved by nucleotide sequencing.
