Society demands a university education grounded on ethical principles. Education in ethics values is responsibility of universities but will not be viable unless also adopted by directly responsible ...agents, the teachers who work with the students. For this reason, our primary research objective was to conduct an in-depth analysis of how Health Sciences students self-perceive the ethical dimension.
A mixed research methodology with two phases, qualitative and quantitative, allowed us to address our research question from two complementary viewpoints. Conversational interviews were conducted in an intentional and purposive sample to identify a wide range of discursive representations. A questionnaire was designed based on previous studies and the topics of qualitative research. The response format for the questionnaire followed a Likert scale and modulators such as sex, age, degree and the score of a social desirability test were examined.
After 24 conversational interviews, three main thematic blocks (coinciding with the three subscales of the questionnaire) were identified: "attitudes for harmony in human relations", "construction of the self" and "rules and regulations". A total of 246 students completed a questionnaire with 39 items. The total scores ranged from 93 to 152 points, with an average score of 122.72 ± 10.64 points. Responsibility, the basic rules of education and respect were perceived as the two most important values, whereas solidarity and social participation as the least important. Results showed a significant positive linear correlation between total score on the questionnaire and age and social desirability. Age was also a significant predictor for the total score and the subscale score "rules and regulations". The students´ responses seemed to be conditioned by the degree of social desirability that they present.
The ad-hoc questionnaire captured the maintenance of high ethical values in our college undergraduate students, which may be directly related to enhanced social desirability. The scores obtained on the questionnaire were correlated with the students' age, which may indicate that values might tend to acquire progressively more importance as students grow older. Further research is warranted to delve deeper on the determinants of professionalism and ethical decision-making in college students.
There are controversial associations between headaches and psychological symptoms.
To design a profile of neuroticism, a term that groups variables related to negative personality traits, in patients ...with chronic daily headache (CDH) when compared to episodic migraine (EM) patients, applying the Factorial Scale of Emotional Adjustment/Neuroticism (NFS).
One hundred adult patients with CDH and forty with EM answered the NFS.
Comorbidities of subtypes of neuroticism (p=0.006) were more common in chronic daily headache patients, with three or more disorders (p=0.0002): dependent personality disorder (p=0.0001), anxiety, reduced concentration and production (p=0.0008), depression (p<0.0001), suicidal ideation (p=0.0008) and hopelessness even without depression (p<0.0001).
Patients with CDH tend to have dependent personality disorder, low production and concentration, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation and hopelessness, superimposing two or more psychological disorders. These factors should be pondered for a better resolution in the treatment of CDH.
Human monkeypox has become increasingly frequent worldwide since the outbreak was first reported in May 2022.
As cidofovir is effective against vaccinia and other Orthopoxvirus diseases, we ...hypothesize that its topical use could be an effective treatment for monkeypox skin lesions, avoiding the adverse effects of systemic administration.
We conducted a prospective study to collect data on the clinical and virologic course of patients with monkeypox. All patients were offered symptomatic treatment. They were also offered treatment with topical cidofovir on a compassionate use basis. Twelve patients received treatment with topical cidofovir 1%, while the others received only symptomatic treatment. Prospective visits were scheduled for the collection of clinical and virological data.
Lesions cleared quicker in the cidofovir-treated group (hazard ratio, 4.572; P = .0039). The median time to resolution was 12 (11.5-15) and 18 (16-21) days, respectively. On day 14, polymerase chain reaction-positive skin lesions were detected in 10% of the cidofovir sample, compared with 62.5% of the non-treated group (P = .019). Local adverse effects were frequent (50%), especially in the anogenital region. No systemic adverse effects were reported.
The study is not a clinical trial and lacks a placebo-controlled arm.
Topical cidofovir is a potentially relevant therapy in patients with skin lesions but mild systemic involvement. Reducing time to resolution could shorten isolation time and improve the cosmetic impact in areas such as the face.
In response to the recent article by Rubio-Muñiz et al., and in agreement with the title of their interesting work, we consider that topical cidofovir is a valuable option for skin lesions caused by ...monkeypox based on a recent publication of ours.
Room temperature phosphorescence by metal-free chromophores is quite a rare phenomenon. Hexasulfurated benzene-cored molecules with phenyl substituents, hereafter named asterisks, display bright ...green phosphorescence in the solid state at room temperature, while they are not luminescent in solution, because of fast non-radiative decay of the lowest excited state. Some of these asterisks are also among the most phosphorescent compounds. Following a search for structure-property relationships, we report here the synthesis, characterization, crystal structure and optical properties of three pentasulfurated benzene-cored asterisks, carrying at the sixth position of the benzene core a cyano (
A5CN
), a carboxaldehyde (
A5CHO
), or a vinyl group (
A5CC
). The most luminescent compound is
A5CN,
displaying an intense orange phosphorescence in the solid state. Our actual aim is to try and correlate the optical properties with the crystal structure in this series of compounds.
Pentasulfurated benzene chromophores are not luminescent in fluid solution and are phosphorescent in the solid state; in particular, the cyano-derivative which displays a bright orange luminescence.
Abstract Radon is an important source of radioactive background in experiments searching for rare decays and in the field of low-energy particle physics. Here, we report the first ...temperature-dependent study of radon adsorption on silver-exchanged zeolites from several commercial producers. Among the three tested zeolites, Ag-ETS-10 showed the best result. Hence, it was chosen for the further study of internal radioactivity and radon emanation, which are important characteristics of materials used in low-activity experiments. The important role of silver in radon adsorption is demonstrated by comparison of the silver-exchanged zeolites with their unexchanged counterparts. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent measurements showed that the enhancement of the radon adsorption upon the introduction of silver in zeolite occurs due to the increase of the heat of adsorption. This opens a new perspective for the search for highly efficient radon adsorbents.
The separation of molecules with similar size and shape is an important technological challenge. For example, rare gases can pose either an economic opportunity or an environmental hazard and there ...is a need to separate these spherical molecules selectively at low concentrations in air. Likewise, chiral molecules are important building blocks for pharmaceuticals, but chiral enantiomers, by definition, have identical size and shape, and their separation can be challenging. Here we show that a porous organic cage molecule has unprecedented performance in the solid state for the separation of rare gases, such as krypton and xenon. The selectivity arises from a precise size match between the rare gas and the organic cage cavity, as predicted by molecular simulations. Breakthrough experiments demonstrate real practical potential for the separation of krypton, xenon and radon from air at concentrations of only a few parts per million. We also demonstrate selective binding of chiral organic molecules such as 1-phenylethanol, suggesting applications in enantioselective separation.
Squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most common head and neck types of skin cancer. This main objective of this paper is to present a case of a patient who had a moderately differentiated squamous ...cell carcinoma of the nose and whose tumor had an aggressive growth.
Patients with invasive nasal squamous cell carcinoma who require total rhinectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy benefit from a self‐retaining nasal prosthesis, as it promises favorable cosmetic and functional results and decreased tumor recurrence.
