...rare is the first Brescia edition that, for several centuries, the editio secunda – which appeared in Verona in 1486 – was wrongly heralded as the princeps. While it reproduces the part-antique, ...part-Renaissance capitula of its (lost) manuscript exemplar, it lacks signatures, catchwords and foliation, the last of which is helpfully provided by B. Given that the book is intended primarily for reference, the addition of occasional line-references to the poetic text would have saved the curious many collective man-hours. ...the lost codex that the princeps reproduced – perhaps with no conscious editorial emendation from Ferrandus or his assistants – is of little value: it is of no independent authority, belonging to a lower branch of the (fifteenth-century) Italian tradition, and contains only a handful of readings not found in earlier codices.
The delayed neutron activity resulting from the fast induced fission of
235
U and
237
Np has been studied. The six-group decay constants, relative abundances, and absolute yield of delayed neutrons ...from fast fission of
235
U and
237
Np were measured using the Godiva IV fast assembly at the Los Alamos Critical Experiments Facility. The absolute yield measured for
235
U was 0.0163 ± 0.0008 neutron/fission. This value compares very well with the well-established Keepin absolute yield of 0.0165 ± 0.0005. The absolute yield value measured for
237
Np was 0.0126 ± 0.0007. The measured delayed neutron parameters for
235
U are corroborated with period (e-folding time) versus reactivity calculations.
How do harsh early environments affect children’s development? The answer to this question is complex and difficult to determine for a variety of reasons. However, data obtained from the Romanian ...child-welfare system provided a new opportunity to approach this question. We examined the association between the pathways children followed leading to their placement in foster families and their behaviors. The four pathways identified were: (a) children placed directly from biological families into foster families, (b) children abandoned in nurseries before placement in foster families, (c) children abandoned in maternity wards before placement in foster families, and (d) children who resided in placement centers (formerly called orphanages) before placement in foster families. Overall, children in the Placement Center Pathway showed the most psychological and behavior problems, second was the Nursery Pathway, third was the Biological Family Pathway, and finally the Maternity Pathway had the least problems. It is important to note that it is not the intention of the present study to draw a definitive causal arrow between placement centers and later functioning. Data from the present study, and future studies of this type, will help policy-makers, practitioners, and researchers ascertain existing needs of these children so that future efforts to improve foster care may be directed to these areas.
OBJECTIVE To investigate the probability of undergoing filtration surgery in either 1 or both eyes in patients in whom open-angle glaucoma was newly diagnosed. METHODS AND DESIGN A retrospective ...community-based study of 295 residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota, in whom open-angle glaucoma was newly diagnosed between January 1, 1965, and December 31, 1980, was performed. Kaplan-Meier methods were used to estimate the cumulative probability of undergoing filtration surgery during a 20-year period. RESULTS At 20 years of follow-up, the Kaplan-Meier cumulative probability of undergoing filtration surgery in at least 1 eye was estimated to be 23% (95% confidence interval, 16%-30%), and in both eyes the estimate was 12% (95% confidence interval, 6%-17%). Patients with optic nerve damage at the time of diagnosis were more likely to undergo surgery than patients with elevated intraocular pressure but no damage (1 eye, 39% vs 15%; both eyes, 27% vs 5%). CONCLUSION This retrospective study of a white population newly diagnosed as having and treated for open-angle glaucoma indicates that while most patients did not undergo filtration surgery in the course of glaucoma therapy, at least one third of those with glaucomatous damage at the time of diagnosis underwent filtration surgery.Arch Ophthalmol. 1999;117:1211-1215-->
