Cell refractive index is a key biophysical parameter, which has been extensively studied. It is correlated with other cell biophysical properties including mechanical, electrical and optical ...properties, and not only represents the intracellular mass and concentration of a cell, but also provides important insight for various biological models. Measurement techniques developed earlier only measure the effective refractive index of a cell or a cell suspension, providing only limited information on cell refractive index and hence hindering its in-depth analysis and correlation. Recently, the emergence of microfluidic, photonic and imaging technologies has enabled the manipulation of a single cell and the 3D refractive index of a single cell down to sub-micron resolution, providing powerful tools to study cells based on refractive index. In this review, we provide an overview of cell refractive index models and measurement techniques including microfluidic chip-based techniques for the last 50 years, present the applications and significance of cell refractive index in cell biology, hematology, and pathology, and discuss future research trends in the field, including 3D imaging methods, integration with microfluidics and potential applications in new and breakthrough research areas.

Background
IL‐25 has been proposed to play a key role in the pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). This study aimed to evaluate the association of IL‐25 with the ...Th2‐biased inflammatory profiles in CRSwNP.
Methods
Nasal polyp (NP) tissues and control uncinate process tissues were collected from 92 patients with CRSwNP, 20 patients with chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps (CRSsNP), and 16 normal control subjects. IL‐25 expression was examined using immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence staining, flow cytometry, RT‐qPCR, and ELISA. The inflammatory profiles and clinical characteristics of 2 NP subtypes (IL‐25high and IL‐25low) were evaluated, and the effects of IL‐25 on Th2 cytokine production in cultured dispersed polyp cells were examined in vitro.
Results
The mRNA and protein levels of IL‐25 were significantly increased in the polyp tissues compared with the control uncinate process tissues. The IL‐25high subtype showed greater computed tomography scores, endoscopic scores, and Th2 response. Exposure to IL‐25 activated type 2 innate lymphoid cells and Th2 cells in NP simultaneously which further increased Th2 cytokine production in vitro.
Conclusions
Local IL‐25 plays a crucial role in promoting Th2‐biased inflammatory profiles in NP and may serve as a promising therapeutic target in CRSwNP patients.
There are still no effective therapies for hyposalivation caused by irradiation. In our previous study, bone marrow stem cells can be transdifferentiated into acinar-like cells in vitro. Therefore, ...we hypothesized that transplantation with bone marrow stem cells or acinar-like cells may help functional regeneration of salivary glands. Bone marrow stem cells were labeled with nanoparticles and directly co-cultured with acinar cells to obtain labeled acinar-like cells. In total, 140 severely combined immune-deficiency mice were divided into 4 groups for cell therapy experiments: (1) normal mice, (2) mice receiving irradiation around their head-and-neck areas; (3) mice receiving irradiation and intra-gland transplantation with labeled stem cells; and (4) mice receiving irradiation and intra-gland transplantation with labeled acinar-like cells. Our results showed that salivary glands damaged due to irradiation can be rescued by cell therapy with either bone marrow stem cells or acinar-like cells for recovery of saliva production, body weight, and gland weight. Transdifferentiation of bone marrow stem cells into acinar-like cells in vivo was also noted. This study demonstrated that cell therapy with bone marrow stem cells or acinar-like cells can help functional regeneration of salivary glands, and that acinar-like cells showed better therapeutic potentials than those of bone marrow stem cells.
We describe a novel surgical technique in 31 women with histopathologically confirmed placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) disorders managed by a multidisciplinary team using a prophylactic infrarenal ...abdominal aortic cross‐clamping technique during caesarean hysterectomy. We conclude that this new surgical procedure is a relatively safe technique to potentially control operative blood loss. Our work may stimulate others to develop protocols assessing this innovative technique to improve the surgical outcome of PAS disorders.
Topological Weyl semimetals (TWSs) represent a novel state of topological quantum matter which not only possesses Weyl fermions (massless chiral particles that can be viewed as magnetic monopoles in ...momentum space) in the bulk and unique Fermi arcs generated by topological surface states, but also exhibits appealing physical properties such as extremely large magnetoresistance and ultra-high carrier mobility. Here, by performing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on NbP and TaP, we directly observed their band structures with characteristic Fermi arcs of TWSs. Furthermore, by systematically investigating NbP, TaP and TaAs from the same transition metal monopnictide family, we discovered their Fermiology evolution with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) strength. Our experimental findings not only reveal the mechanism to realize and fine-tune the electronic structures of TWSs, but also provide a rich material base for exploring many exotic physical phenomena (for example, chiral magnetic effects, negative magnetoresistance, and the quantum anomalous Hall effect) and novel future applications.

shows an unexpected double-peak behavior. The unusual suppression of
T
c
at P1 is concomitant with the rapidly damping of quantum oscillations, sudden enhancement of the residual resistivity and rapid decrease of magnetoresistance. Our discoveries indicate an unusual competition between superconductivity and CDW state in pressurized kagome lattice.
Abstract Previous data demonstrate that traumatic brain injury (TBI) activates autophagy, and increases microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3) immunostaining mainly in neurons. However, ...the role of autophagy in traumatic brain damage remains elusive. The aim of the present study was to investigate the autophagic mechanisms participating in traumatic brain injury. The autophagy inhibitors 3-methyladenine (3-MA) and bafliomycin A1 (BFA) were administered with a single i.c.v. injection before TBI. We first examined the protein levels of Beclin-1 and LC3 II, which have been found to promote autophagy previously. Immunoblotting analysis showed that 3-MA pretreatment reduced post-TBI Beclin-1 and LC3-II levels, and maintained p62/SQSTM1 (p62) levels. In addition, double immunolabeling showed that the increased punctate LC3-II dots colocalizing with Propidium Iodide (PI)-stained nuclei at 24 h after injury, were partially inhibited by 3-MA pretreatment. Furthermore, inhibition of autophagy could reduce TBI-induced cell injury assessed with i.p. injection of PI and lesion volume, and attenuate behavioral outcome evaluated by motor test and Morris water maze. The neuroprotective effects were associated with an inhibition on TBI-induced up-regulation of LC3, Beclin-1, cathepsin B, caspase-3 and the Beclin-1/Bcl-2 ratio. Taken together, these data imply that the autophagy pathway is involved in the pathophysiologic responses after TBI, and inhibition of this pathway may help attenuate traumatic damage and functional outcome deficits.
By combining LAMOST DR4 and Gaia DR2 common red clump stars with age and proper motion, we analyze the amplitude evolution of the stellar warp independently of any assumption with a simple model. The ...greatest height of the warp disk increases with galactocentric distance in different populations and is dependent on age: the younger stellar populations exhibit stronger warp features than the old ones, accompanied by the warp amplitude γ (age) decreasing with age, and its first derivative is different from zero. The azimuth of the line of nodes φw is stable at −5° without clear time evolution, which perfectly confirms some previous works. All of this self-consistent evidence supports that our Galactic warp should most likely be a long-lived but nonsteady structure and not a transient one, which is supporting that the warp originated from gas infall onto the disk or other hypotheses that suppose that the warp mainly affects the gas, and consequently, younger populations tracing the gas are stronger than older ones. In other words, the Galactic warp is induced by the nongravitational interaction over the disk models.
Autophagy is a programmed cell survival mechanism that has a key role in both physiologic and pathologic conditions. The relationship between autophagy and cancer is complex because autophagy can act ...as either a tumour suppressor or as a tumour promoter. The role of autophagy in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is controversial. Several studies have claimed that either a high or low expression of autophagy-related proteins was associated with poor prognosis of OSCCs. The aims of the study were to compare autophagy in OSCCs, verrucous hyperplasias, and normal oral mucosas, and to inspect the prognostic role of autophagy in OSCCs.
We used the autophagosome marker, LC3B, and autophagy flux marker, p62/SQSTM1 (p62), by using immunohistochemistry, and examined p62 mRNA by RNA in situ hybridization, to evaluate autophagy in 195 OSCCs, 47 verrucous hyperplasias, and 37 normal oral mucosas. The prognostic roles of LC3B and p62 protein expressions in OSCCs were investigated.
We discovered that the normal oral mucosa exhibited limited LC3B punctae and weak cytoplasmic p62 staining, whereas the OSCCs exhibited a marked increase in LC3B punctae and cytoplasmic p62 expression. The expression pattern of LC3B and cytoplasmic p62 of the verrucous hyperplasias were between normal oral mucosas and OSCCs. The normal oral mucosas, verrucous hyperplasias, and OSCCs presented no differences in nuclear p62 expression and the p62 mRNA level. p62 mRNA expression was elevated in a minority of cases. High p62 mRNA expression was associated with high p62 protein expression in the cytoplasm. Increased LC3B punctae, high cytoplasmic p62, and low nuclear p62 expressions in OSCCs were associated with aggressive clinicopathologic features and unfavourable prognosis. In addition, low nuclear p62 expression was an independent prognostic factor for overall and disease-specific survival rates. Furthermore, we disclosed that high cytoplasmic p62 expression accompanied with either a low or high LC3B expression, which indicated autophagy impairment under basal or activated autophagic activity, was associated with aggressive behaviour in advanced OSCCs.
We suggested that autophagy was altered during cancer initiation and progression. Autophagy impairment contributed to cancer progression in advanced OSCCs.
