A Metropolis–Hastings Robbins–Monro (MH-RM) algorithm for high-dimensional maximum marginal likelihood exploratory item factor analysis is proposed. The sequence of estimates from the MH-RM algorithm ...converges with probability one to the maximum likelihood solution. Details on the computer implementation of this algorithm are provided. The accuracy of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated with simulations. As an illustration, the proposed algorithm is applied to explore the factor structure underlying a new quality of life scale for children. It is shown that when the dimensionality is high, MH-RM has advantages over existing methods such as numerical quadrature based EM algorithm. Extensions of the algorithm to other modeling frameworks are discussed.
Self‐healing polymers crosslinked by solely reversible bonds are intrinsically weaker than common covalently crosslinked networks. Introducing covalent crosslinks into a reversible network would ...improve mechanical strength. It is challenging, however, to apply this concept to “dry” elastomers, largely because reversible crosslinks such as hydrogen bonds are often polar motifs, whereas covalent crosslinks are nonpolar motifs. These two types of bonds are intrinsically immiscible without cosolvents. Here, we design and fabricate a hybrid polymer network by crosslinking randomly branched polymers carrying motifs that can form both reversible hydrogen bonds and permanent covalent crosslinks. The randomly branched polymer links such two types of bonds and forces them to mix on the molecular level without cosolvents. This enables a hybrid “dry” elastomer that is very tough with fracture energy 13500 Jm−2 comparable to that of natural rubber. Moreover, the elastomer can self‐heal at room temperature with a recovered tensile strength 4 MPa, which is 30% of its original value, yet comparable to the pristine strength of existing self‐healing polymers. The concept of forcing covalent and reversible bonds to mix at molecular scale to create a homogenous network is quite general and should enable development of tough, self‐healing polymers of practical usage.
A tough, self‐healing polymer network is fabricated by crosslinking randomly branched polymers carrying motifs that can form both reversible hydrogen bonds and permanent covalent crosslinks. The randomly branched polymer forces such two types of bonds to mix on the molecular level without cosolvents; this enables a hybrid “dry” elastomer with an exceptional combination of toughness and self‐healing ability.
The LAMOST survey has provided 9 million spectra in its Data Release 5 (DR5) at R ∼ 1800. Extracting precise stellar labels is crucial for such a large sample. In this paper, we report the ...implementation of the Stellar LAbel Machine (SLAM), which is a data-driven method based on support vector regression (SVR), a robust nonlinear regression technique. Thanks to the capability to model highly nonlinear problems with SVR, SLAM can generally derive stellar labels over a wide range of spectral types. This gives it a unique capability compared to other popular data-driven methods. To illustrate this capability, we test the performance of SLAM on stars ranging from Teff ∼ 4000 to ∼8000 K trained on LAMOST spectra and stellar labels. At g-band signal-to-noise ratio (S/Ng) higher than 100, the random uncertainties of Teff, log g, and Fe/H are 50 K, 0.09 dex, and 0.07 dex, respectively. We then set up another SLAM model trained by APOGEE and LAMOST common stars to demonstrate its capability of dealing with high dimensional problems. The spectra are from LAMOST DR5 and the stellar labels of the training set are from APOGEE DR15, including Teff, log g, M/H, /M, C/M, and N/M. The cross-validated scatters at are 49 K, 0.10 dex, 0.037 dex, 0.026 dex, 0.058 dex, and 0.106 dex for these parameters, respectively. This performance is at the same level as other up-to-date data-driven models. As a byproduct, we also provide the latest catalog of ∼1 million LAMOST DR5 K giant stars with SLAM-predicted stellar labels in this work.
Heavy metal pollution not only decreases crop yield and quality, but also affects human health via the food chain. Ubiquitination‐dependent protein degradation is involved in plant growth, ...development, and environmental interaction, but the functions of ubiquitin‐ligase (E3) genes are largely unknown in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). Here, we functionally characterized a RING E3 ligase gene, SlRING1, which positively regulates cadmium (Cd) tolerance in tomato plants. An in vitro ubiquitination experiment shows that SlRING1 has E3 ubiquitin ligase activity. The determination of the subcellular localization reveals that SlRING1 is localized at both the plasma membrane and the nucleus. Overexpression of SlRING1 in tomato increased the chlorophyll content, the net photosynthetic rate, and the maximal photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm), but reduced the levels of reactive oxygen species and relative electrolyte leakage under Cd stress. Moreover, SlRING1 overexpression increased the transcript levels of CATALASE (CAT), DEHYDROASCORBATE REDUCTASE (DHAR), MONODEHYDROASCORBATE REDUCTASE (MDHAR), GLUTATHIONE (GSH1), and PHYTOCHELATIN SYNTHASE (PCS), which contribute to the antioxidant and detoxification system. Crucially, SlRING1 overexpression also reduced the concentrations of Cd in both shoots and roots. Thus, SlRING1‐overexpression‐induced enhanced tolerance to Cd is ascribed to reduced Cd accumulation and alleviated oxidative stress. Our findings suggest that SlRING1 is a positive regulator of Cd tolerance, which can be a potential breeding target for improving heavy metal tolerance in horticultural crops.
The 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) causing an outbreak of pneumonia in Wuhan, Hubei province of China was isolated in January 2020. This study aims to investigate its epidemiologic history, and ...analyze the clinical characteristics, treatment regimens, and prognosis of patients infected with 2019-nCoV during this outbreak.
Clinical data from 137 2019-nCoV-infected patients admitted to the respiratory departments of nine tertiary hospitals in Hubei province from December 30, 2019 to January 24, 2020 were retrospectively collected, including general status, clinical manifestations, laboratory test results, imaging characteristics, and treatment regimens.
None of the 137 patients (61 males, 76 females, aged 20-83 years, median age 57 years) had a definite history of exposure to Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market. Major initial symptoms included fever (112/137, 81.8%), coughing (66/137, 48.2%), and muscle pain or fatigue (44/137, 32.1%), with other, less typical initial symptoms observed at low frequency, including heart palpitations, diarrhea, and headache. Nearly 80% of the patients had normal or decreased white blood cell counts, and 72.3% (99/137) had lymphocytopenia. Lung involvement was present in all cases, with most chest computed tomography scans showing lesions in multiple lung lobes, some of which were dense; ground-glass opacity co-existed with consolidation shadows or cord-like shadows. Given the lack of effective drugs, treatment focused on symptomatic and respiratory support. Immunoglobulin G was delivered to some critically ill patients according to their conditions. Systemic corticosteroid treatment did not show significant benefits. Notably, early respiratory support facilitated disease recovery and improved prognosis. The risk of death was primarily associated with age, underlying chronic diseases, and median interval from the appearance of initial symptoms to dyspnea.
The majority of patients with 2019-nCoV pneumonia present with fever as the first symptom, and most of them still showed typical manifestations of viral pneumonia on chest imaging. Middle-aged and elderly patients with underlying comorbidities are susceptible to respiratory failure and may have a poorer prognosis.
Objectives
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is frequent in both chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of MetS and ...the status of systemic inflammation in overlap syndrome.
Methods
A total of 151 consecutive COPD patients were recruited in this cross‐sectional study. Spirometry and polysomnography were done in all patients. The MetS was defined according to the criteria of the International Diabetes Federation. Anthropometry, metabolic parameters and inflammatory biomarkers: IL‐6, TNF‐α, leptin, resistin and adiponectin were recorded.
Results
OSA was present in 19.2% COPD patients. Subjects with overlap syndrome had higher neck and waist circumference compared to those with COPD alone. Significant differences in levels of blood pressure, lipid metabolic and glucose metabolic were found between two groups with overlap and COPD, as well as inflammatory biomarkers. Prevalence of MetS was increased in overlap group. Multivariate logistic regression showed that BMI, systolic BP when fall asleep and recumbent angiotens levels as significant independent predictors of the presence of Mets in overlap syndrome.
Conclusion
This study shows that MetS is frequent in patients with overlap. Overlap syndrome indicates a higher cardiometabolic risk and higher levels of systemic inflammatory.
We propose a hopping mechanism for diffusion of large nonsticky nanoparticles subjected to topological constraints in both unentangled and entangled polymer solids (networks and gels) and entangled ...polymer liquids (melts and solutions). Probe particles with size larger than the mesh size a x of unentangled polymer networks or tube diameter a e of entangled polymer liquids are trapped by the network or entanglement cells. At long time scales, however, these particles can diffuse by overcoming free energy barrier between neighboring confinement cells. The terminal particle diffusion coefficient dominated by this hopping diffusion is appreciable for particles with size moderately larger than the network mesh size a x or tube diameter a e . Much larger particles in polymer solids will be permanently trapped by local network cells, whereas they can still move in polymer liquids by waiting for entanglement cells to rearrange on the relaxation time scales of these liquids. Hopping diffusion in entangled polymer liquids and networks has a weaker dependence on particle size than that in unentangled networks as entanglements can slide along chains under polymer deformation. The proposed novel hopping model enables understanding the motion of large nanoparticles in polymeric nanocomposites and the transport of nano drug carriers in complex biological gels such as mucus.
Abstract
Sepsis is a common complication of combat injuries and trauma, and is defined as a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. It is also one of ...the significant causes of death and increased health care costs in modern intensive care units. The use of antibiotics, fluid resuscitation, and organ support therapy have limited prognostic impact in patients with sepsis. Although its pathophysiology remains elusive, immunosuppression is now recognized as one of the major causes of septic death. Sepsis-induced immunosuppression is resulted from disruption of immune homeostasis. It is characterized by the release of anti-inflammatory cytokines, abnormal death of immune effector cells, hyperproliferation of immune suppressor cells, and expression of immune checkpoints. By targeting immunosuppression, especially with immune checkpoint inhibitors, preclinical studies have demonstrated the reversal of immunocyte dysfunctions and established host resistance. Here, we comprehensively discuss recent findings on the mechanisms, regulation and biomarkers of sepsis-induced immunosuppression and highlight their implications for developing effective strategies to treat patients with septic shock.
High-quality data are the precondition for analyzing and using big data and for guaranteeing the value of the data. Currently, comprehensive analysis and research of quality standards and quality ...assessment methods for big data are lacking. First, this paper summarizes reviews of data quality research. Second, this paper analyzes the data characteristics of the big data environment, presents quality challenges faced by big data, and formulates a hierarchical data quality framework from the perspective of data users. This framework consists of big data quality dimensions, quality characteristics, and quality indexes. Finally, on the basis of this framework, this paper constructs a dynamic assessment process for data quality. This process has good expansibility and adaptability and can meet the needs of big data quality assessment. The research results enrich the theoretical scope of big data and lay a solid foundation for the future by establishing an assessment model and studying evaluation algorithms.
Transformations within container-molecules provide a good alternative between traditional homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, as the containers themselves can be regarded as single molecular ...nanomicelles. We report here the designed-synthesis of a water-soluble redox-active supramolecular Pd4L2 cage and its application in the encapsulation of aromatic molecules and polyoxometalates (POMs) catalysts. Compared to the previous known Pd6L4 cage, our results show that replacement of two cis-blocked palladium corners with p-xylene bridges through pyridinium bonds formation between the 2,4,6-tri-4-pyridyl-1,3,5-triazine (TPT) ligands not only provides reversible redox-activities for the new Pd4L2 cage, but also realizes the expansion and subdivision of its internal cavity. An increased number of guests, including polyaromatics and POMs, can be accommodated inside the Pd4L2 cage. Moreover, both conversion and product selectivity (sulfoxide over sulfone) have also been much enhanced in the desulfurization reactions catalyzed by the POMs@Pd4L2 host–guest complexes. We expect that further photochromic or photoredox functions are possible taking advantage of this new generation of organo-palladium cage.
