Transplantation with fresh cadaveric osteochondral allograft (FOCA) is frequently used in defects of the femoral condyle and tibial plateau to preserve the knee joint. However, the use of FOCA in ...bipolar lesions remains controversial in cases with bipolar defects and a history of infection.
We present a 21-year-old male patient with a massive post-traumatic osteochondral defect of the lateral compartment of the knee and a history of infection, treated by a two-stage approach. In stage 1, infection was eradicated, and joint function recovered with aggressive debridement, polymethyl methacrylate beads, bone cement spacers, and Judet's quadricepsplasty. In stage 2, transplantation was performed with a bipolar FOCA. All treatments were planned using 3D-printed models.
The two-stage approach and 3D planning can increase the chances of transplant success by preparing the future allograft bed and obtaining an optimal match between the cadaveric allograft and the patient's defect in cases with potential contraindications, such as a bipolar lesion in the femoral condyle and tibial plateau and a history of infection. A combined approach may lead to a more beneficial outcome for the patient to preserve joint function and improve quality of life.

This work presents the results of research made within the framework of the Solar Decathlon LAC 2019 international competition, which aimed at designing and building a prototype of a TUHOUSE ...(Technically Unique House Using Solar Energy) affordable dwelling, at a 1:1 scale, a house that is capable of incorporating sustainable and bioclimatic strategies for the tropical region. The methodology consisted of a design workshop with interdisciplinary work from the different architecture and engineering areas in programs at the Universities of San Buenaventura and Autonoma de Occidente (Cali, Colombia). The main contribution of the methodology was to achieve interdisciplinary work from the initial stages, alongside students and teachers participating in the construction of the prototype, before finally checking its performance using the contest’s tests. Among the results that stand out from of this experience, are an urban proposal with high habitability and density, the testing of passive design strategies focused on a prototype envelope that can be replicated in similar conditions, but also the importance of the question about the validity of the thermal comfort model proposed for tropical regions.
In this work we formulate a model to solve a type of vehicle scheduling problem, derived from the operation of the mass transit system (MIO) in Cali city, Colombia. Four companies operate the system ...with 3 types of buses and four depots. Two kinds of tasks should be assigned to operators' buses. A task is a sequence of consecutive travels of a route between two stations: initial and final. Each task should start and should finish in a depot, not necessarily the same. There are two main objectives defined by the operators. One objective is to minimize the total deadhead kilometers between depots and stations where tasks should start or end. The other objective is to minimize the maximum deviation of kilometers (commercial and deadhead) assigned to the operators regarding the ideal quantity of kilometers that they should have, according to the number of their buses in the fleet. We have implemented the proposed model in AMPL using Gurobi solver and we validate it using nine representative instances, generated with real data obtained from the system operation. The results obtained, in all cases, improve the solutions proposed by the company. Model variations are proposed to deal with new desirable constraints for the company.
Prostate cancer (PCa) is a disease with high morbidity and mortality rates, which requires finding new lines of approach. The significant advances in and interest of molecular biology in this ...condition have led to the discovery of elements profiled as an essential research target. Accordingly, we consider the importance of studying the role that monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs) play in PCa. These transporters might have a functional characterization, possible diagnostic and therapeutic implications, and influence on the progression and prognosis of this cancer. We reviewed literature published from January 2010 to June 2020 in different databases and search engines to find studies that respond to our question. MCTs have a close correlation with PCa, contributing to their phenotype of glycolytic and acid-resistant metabolism. They determine the maintenance and progression of the disease depending on the expression of different molecular types of the transporter. Thus, MCT2 highlights as a biomarker in early diagnosis and MCT4 in poor prognosis and resistance. Finally, MCT1 and MCT4 profile as a potential therapeutic target by decreasing cell proliferation. In conclusion, MCTs play an essential role in PCa; therefore, they should be taken into account in subsequent studies for finding tools with clinical applicability and contributing to the reduction of the disease burden.
