The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is the most important pest of maize in many countries. Entomopathogenic viruses mainly Baculoviruses family are excellent ...biological control agents and therefore a viable alternative for managing this pest. The aim of this study was to determine the biological activity of eight native nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPVs) against FAW larvae. Additionally, two of the most virulent isolates (SfCH32 and SfCH15) were characterized biologically by bioassays to estimate their median lethal dose (LD50) and median lethal time (LT50), morphologically by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and molecularly by restriction enzymes. Three (SfCH15, SfCH18 and SfCH32) of the eight tested native nucleopolyhedrovirus isolates caused mortalities ˃98% at 168‐hr post‐inoculation (hpi) with a dose of 9.2 × 104 OBs/larva. SfCH15 and SfCH32 isolates showed occlusion bodies (OBs) of irregular shape and size (1.02–2.24 μm). The SfCH15 and SfCH32 isolates showed similar median lethal dose (5.6 × 102–6.4 × 102 OBs/larva). The lowest median lethal time (114.5 hpi) was observed with the SfCH15 isolate at the highest concentration (2.5 × 106 OBs/larva). The DNA restriction profiles for SfCH15 and SfCH32 were different, with their genome size being ~128,000 bp and 132,000 bp, respectively. SfCH15 and SfCH32 isolates showed similar morphological characteristics and the highest virulence against fall armyworm. This study showed that native isolates were highly virulent against S. frugiperda larvae, being similar to other reported strains; however, field studies are required to confirm their insecticidal effect.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the presence of oval starch granules and other particles in flour, in contrast to flours, starches showed lower ash, proteins and lipids content. However, the amylose content was higher in starches (42.25-48.2%). Flours showed a higher gelatinization temperature (
= 73.17-73.62 °C), and their starches presented greater gelatinization enthalpy (∆
= 11.82-13.43 J/g). All samples showed a B-type diffraction pattern, and the crystallinity was higher in the flours. The rheological analysis (flow curves and viscoelastic tests) evidenced a pseudoplastic (
= 0.28-0.36) behavior in all samples analyzed, but the consistency index (
) was higher in starches. In general, the flours and starches from avocado seeds presented interesting proximal, thermal and functional properties for possible application in food systems, and these findings could contribute to the revaluation of this by-product.
Introducción. Algunas especies de trips del género Frankliniella (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) son de importancia cuarentenaria en diversos cultivos en la región Centroamericana, sin embargo, diversas ...especies de dicho género han sido reportadas como parte de la fauna visitadora de la floración, no solo en plantas con producción agrícola. Objetivo. Registrar las especies de Frankliniella asociadas a los árboles de aguacate y sus arvenses, en la región central de Costa Rica y presentar una clave para la identificación de dichos trips. Materiales y métodos. Los muestreos se realizaron cada dos meses en tres diferentes zonas en la región central de Costa Rica, durante los años 2019 y 2021. Los trips del aguacate y de las plantas arvenses se recolectaron mediante el golpe de ramas, estos fueron preparados para su visualización en un microscopio convencional de luz e identificados por medio de su morfología. Resultados. Se identificaron veintidós especies de Frankliniella, dieciocho de ellas se asociaron a arvenses que crecen en los mismos cultivares, mientras que cinco especies se asociaron directamente al follaje y flor del árbol de aguacate. Conclusión. En la región central de Costa Rica, del género Frankliniella se encontraron tres especies: F. alonso, F. doris y F. nita sobre el árbol de aguacate durante la etapa de floración, una sola especie del follaje: F. sandovalensis y una sola especie tanto en el follaje como en la floración: F. cephalica.
El fruto de aguacate es uno de los productos más exitosos de la producción e industrialización agroalimentaria de México. Se puede consumir fresco o procesado en una gran variedad de productos ...derivados. Durante su procesamiento, se generan una gran cantidad de residuos agroindustriales como la semilla del aguacate, la cual tiene componentes valiosos y con potencial de ser utilizada en diversas industrias como ingrediente en la formulación de productos funcionales. El objetivo de esta investigación fue resumir el conocimiento actual de la composición, la estructura, las propiedades y las posibles aplicaciones industriales de las semillas de aguacate y sus principales subproductos. Además, este estudio se realizó de acuerdo con la declaración Prisma, para lo cual se hizo una búsqueda bibliográfica y sistemática de artículos de investigación de los últimos 20 años en diferentes bases de datos, tomándose en cuenta diversos criterios de inclusión y exclusión. Entre los resultados, se encontró que la obtención de almidones y compuestos bioactivos a partir de la semilla de aguacate es la categoría más estudiada, siendo Nigeria, México y Estados Unidos los países con más reportes relacionados durante 2015-2020. La conclusión es que existe un creciente interés por la revalorización de las semillas de aguacate, debido a que se considera una fuente potencial de diversos componentes como vitaminas, minerales, antioxidantes, ácidos grasos saludables, carbohidratos, entre otros, y con posibles aplicaciones industriales para el desarrollo productos funcionales con valor agregado.
Abstract The pink mealybug Maconellicoccus hirsutus Green is a pest of economic importance in various crops around the world. The objective was to determine the biological effectiveness of organic ...and inorganic products for the management of M. hirsutus in the soursop crop. The experiment was carried out in the communities of “Lima de Abajo” and “El Capomo”, in the municipality of Compostela, Nayarit, Mexico, during the period from September to November 2018 and from July to August 2019. The treatments were Ara3, Inter-a-ch-c, Evolution, a complex of plant extracts (Capsicum chinense + Allium sativum + Allium cepa + Artemisia absinthium), Mos Blanc® (Imidacloprid), farmers’ control (Detergent Blanca Nieves® + Sodium Hypochlorite Cloralex®) and the absolute control (Water). The nymphs and adult females of M. hirsutus were counted after each application, in young shoots. The results showed that in “Lima de Abajo”, Ara 3 registered the highest percentage of suppression after 28 days. In “El Capomo”, Imidacloprid recorded the greatest suppression after 28 days of application. In both communities, the treatments Ara 3, Evolution and Imidacloprid registered the least number of living individuals. The results indicated that Ara 3 and Evolution were the most promising alternatives in the management against M. hirsutus in the crop.
In commercial soursop orchards in the state of Nayarit, Mexico, trees with apparent symptoms of root rot are observed, without the causal agent being known. Therefore, the objective of the research ...was to identify the fungi that cause soursop root rot. From January 2020 to January 2021, in orchards of Compostela and San Blas, Nayarit, from two trees with symptoms of possible root rot, root sections with rot were collected. Microorganisms associated with the disease were isolated and identified to carry out pathogenicity tests in one-year-old soursop trees. Fusarium falciforme and Lasiodiplodia theobromae were identified as root pathogens, both fungi are reported for the first time in this fruit tree and for Mexico.
En huertos comerciales de guanábana en Nayarit, México, se observan árboles con síntomas aparentes por pudrición radicular, sin que hasta el momento se identifique el agente causal. Por lo que, el objetivo de la investigación fue, identificar a los hongos que causan pudrición de raíz de guanábana. De enero de 2020 a enero de 2021, en huertos de Compostela y San Blas, Nayarit, de dos árboles con síntomas por posible pudrición radicular, se recolectaron secciones de raíz con pudrición. Se aislaron e identificaron a los microorganismos asociados a la enfermedad para realizar las pruebas de patogenicidad en árboles de guanábana de un año de edad. Se identificó a Fusarium falciforme y a Lasiodiplodia theobromae como patógenos de raíz, ambos hongos son reportados por primera vez en este frutal y para México.
The bean flower thrips, Megalurothrips usitatus (Bagnall) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is native from Asia and is a well-known pest of legumes such as common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), cowpea (Vigna ...unguiculata L. Walp.), pea (Pisum sativum L.), and lima bean (Phaseolus limensis Macf.) (all Fabaceae). This thrips species has been recorded recently in the Americas (USA and Cuba). Before this study there were no records of M. usitatus in Mexico; this work is the first report of M. usitatus in Mexico. We found this species attacking common beans, jicama, and cowpeas in Nayarit State. In cowpeas, it reduced production by at least 60%. The highest population was observed in jicama but no evidence of severe damage or yield loss was documented; however, the potential damage on the seed production should be evaluated. Authorities, researchers, extension agents, and growers should work together to prevent the dispersal of this pest, which may infest other economically important legumes. Chances of controlling or eradicating M. usitatus in the region are minimal if no effective alternatives are available in the short term.
El trips de la flor del frijol, Megalurothrips usitatus (Bagnall) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) es originario de Asia y es una conocida plaga de leguminosas como el frijol común (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), el caupí (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.), guisante (Pisum sativum L.) y frijol lima (Phaseolus limensis Macf.) (todas Fabaceae). Esta especie de trips ha sido registrada recientemente en las Américas (EE.UU. y Cuba). Antes de este estudio no había registros de M. usitatus en México; este trabajo es el primer reporte de M. usitatus en México. Encontramos esta especie atacando frijol común, jícama y caupí en el estado de Nayarit. En caupí, redujo la producción en al menos un 60%. La población más alta se observó en jícama pero no se documentó evidencia de daño severo o pérdida de rendimiento; sin embargo, se debe evaluar el daño potencial sobre la producción de semillas. Las autoridades, investigadores, extensionistas y productores deben trabajar juntos para evitar la dispersión de esta plaga, que puede infestar otras leguminosas económicamente importantes. Las posibilidades de controlar o erradicar M. usitatus en la región son mínimas si no se dispone de alternativas eficaces a corto plazo.
Abstract This study consisted of determining the effect of Bacillus strains inoculated alone or in combination with phytopathogenic fungi on the production of human health-related compounds and ...volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in tomato fruits. Seedlings were cultivated under greenhouse conditions and inoculated with B. amyloliquefaciens, B. methylotrophicus and B. subtilis alone or in combination with Alternaria solani, Fusarium oxysporum and Phytophthora infestans. Fully ripe fruits were harvested and evaluated for carotenoid, phenol and VOCs contents. Lycopene was the most abundant carotenoid (46.4-167.62 µg/g), followed by β-carotene and lutein. Fruits from plants inoculated with Bacillus had the highest carotenoid content. In contrast, phytopathogens decreased the carotenoid contents, especially the lycopene content. The content of total phenols ranged from 0.42 to 0.90 mg GAE/g. The content of these compounds increased 1.5-fold in fruits from plants inoculated with Bacillus strains, especially those treated with B. methylotrophicus, but the greatest increase (1.9-fold) was observed in plants inoculated with phytopathogens. Both Bacillus strains and pathogens increased the antioxidant capacity, with a 2.8-fold increase compared to the control. Thirty-two VOCs were identified in the tested tomatoes. The Bacillus strains caused an increase in the concentration of VOCs, which could be associated with an increase in fruit quality.
The objective of the study was to identify the entomofauna associated with soursop cultivated commercially in the municipalities of Compostela and San Blas in the state of Nayarit, Mexico. The ...entomofauna obtained from samples taken from Nov 2016 to Dec 2017 were morphologically identified using taxonomic keys. A total of 3,674 insects were collected, with 20 species being phytophagous, including the pink hibiscus mealybug Maconellicoccus hirsutus (Green) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) and an armored scale Pinnaspis sp. (Hemiptera: Diaspididae). There were 12 species of predators in the families Coccinellidae (Azya orbigera Mulsant, Chilocorus sp., Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulsant, Cycloneda sanguinea L., Cycloneda sp., Hippodamia convergens Guérin-Méneville, Olla v-nigrum Mulsant, Paraneda pallidula guticollis Mulsant, and Stethorus pinachi Gordon & Chapin), and Chrysopidae (Ceraeochrysa valida Banks, Ceraeochrysa sp., and Chrysoperla externa Hagen), and 5 species of parasitoids of the genera Aphytis, Coccophagus, Encarsia (all Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), Anagyrus, and Gyranusoidea (both Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae). The ladybird beetle P. pallidula guticollis was recorded for the first time in the state of Nayarit. Also, 9 phytophagous species are new records for soursop in Mexico.
En México, el cultivo de maíz es la base de la alimentación, el país siembra 6.7 millones de ha, con un rendimiento promedio de 6.6 ton/ha. El objetivo fue evaluar los insecticidas de mayor uso para ...el control de Spodoptera frugiperda sobre la entomofauna asociada a maíz. Se utilizó una parcela de 900 m2 en la Unidad Académica de Agricultura de la Universidad Autónoma de Nayarit durante el ciclo del cultivo. Los insecticidas fueron: clorpirifos etil, cipermetrina, metomilo y spinetoram y un testigo, en un diseño de bloques al azar. Donde no se aplicaron insecticidas se presentó una tasa de parasitismo natural del 27,5%. Las principales especies no objetivo identificadas fueron Pristomerus spinator, Campoletis sonorensis y Cotesia sp. aff. Scitula. En las unidades experimentales tratadas con insecticida la tasa de parasitismo fue de 0%. El insecticida metomilo (carbamato) fue el más agresivo contra organismos no objetivo seguido por clorpirifos etil (organofosforado) mientras que spinetoram (spinosinas) fue el menos agresivo. Los ingredientes activos generalistas como los carbamatos y organofosforados representan un riesgo para la diversidad de enemigos naturales.
