Extreme weather phenomena are increasing due to climate change and having a severe impact on critical infrastructure, including airports. In this context, conducting climate risk assessments is an ...essential step to implement appropriate adaptation strategies. In the present study, a climate-risk assessment framework is applied to evaluate the risk of extreme precipitation events for specific Italian airports: Malpensa, Bergamo, Linate, Fiumicino, Ciampino, Napoli, Catania, Palermo, and Cagliari. This analysis is based on the definition of risk as reported by Sixth Assessment Report of IPCC. The assessment of the climate hazard over the recent-past period (1981–2010) is evaluated through indicators developed from re-analysis data, using the Uncertainties in Ensemble of Regional Re-Analyses dataset are provided by Copernicus Climate Change Service. The expected climate variations are evaluated using an ensemble of high-resolution climate projections from the EURO-CORDEX initiative for the short- (2021–2050), medium- (2041–2070), and long-term future period (2071–2100), under RCP 2.6, RCP 4.5, and RCP 8.5 climate scenarios. The information related to exposure and vulnerability indicators are collected from official documents and website of selected airports, and are freely available. The final risk index provides elements allowing stakeholders to implement adaptation measures to increase their resilience.
This work proposes a new method for hail precipitation detection and probability, based on single-polarization X-band radar measurements. Using a dataset consisting of reflectivity volumes, ground ...truth observations and atmospheric sounding data, a probability of hail index, which provides a simple estimate of the hail potential, has been trained and adapted within Naples metropolitan environment study area. The probability of hail has been calculated starting by four different hail detection methods. The first two, based on (1) reflectivity data and temperature measurements and (2) on vertically-integrated liquid density product, respectively, have been selected from the available literature. The other two techniques are based on combined criteria of the above mentioned methods: the first one (3) is based on the linear discriminant analysis, whereas the other one (4) relies on the fuzzy-logic approach. The latter is an innovative criterion based on a fuzzyfication step performed through ramp membership functions. The performances of the four methods have been tested using an independent dataset: the results highlight that the fuzzy-oriented combined method performs slightly better in terms of false alarm ratio, critical success index and area under the relative operating characteristic. An example of application of the proposed hail detection and probability products is also presented for a relevant hail event, occurred on 21 July 2014.
•Development of a fuzzy-oriented probability of hail index, based on X-band radar.•Validation of the new index against hail events recently occurred in Naples area.•The innovative index allows exploiting X-band radar potential for hydrometeorology.
Here we present the rescue of sub-daily meteorological observations collected from 1884 to 1963 at Montevergine Observatory, located in the Southern Apennines in Italy. The recovered dataset consists ...of 3-daily observations of the following atmospheric variables: dry-bulb temperature, wet-bulb temperature, water vapour pressure, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, cloud type, cloud cover, rainfall, snowfall and precipitation type. The data, originally available only as paper-based records, have been digitized following the World Meteorological Organization standard practices. After a cross-check, the digitized data went through three different automatic quality control tests: the gross error test, which verifies whether the data are within acceptable range limits; the tolerance test, which flags whether values are above or below monthly climatological limits that are defined in accordance with a probability distribution model specific to each variable; and the temporal coherency test, which checks the rate of change and flags unrealistic jumps in consecutive values.
This work presents an 18-year-long (2002–2019) tide-gauge dataset collected on the Island of Ischia (Gulf of Naples, Southern Tyrrhenian Sea) that can contribute to the analysis of the basic features ...of sea-level variability in this region. Analysis of tidal constituents shows that the Gulf of Naples is characterized by the absence of any amphidromic system. In this area, sea-level changes due to the astronomical component of the tide are generally limited to ±20 cm with respect to the mean sea level, but the impact of this variability is enhanced by global sea-level increase and the effect of regional atmospheric perturbations that might also triple sea-level variations. The effects of these events, whose frequency has increased in recent decades, has been dramatic in coastal areas where intense social and economic activity occurs, e.g., in Ischia. On interannual time scales, the results indicate that the relative sea-level rise in Ischia has a magnitude of 3.9 mm/year. Special attention is dedicated to the “acqua alta” episodes and to their linkage with long-term sea-level trends and atmospheric forcing.

In 2021, a group of seven Italian institutions decided to
bring together their know-how, experience, and instruments for measuring the
drop size distribution (DSD) of atmospheric precipitation, ...giving birth to
the Italian Group of Disdrometry (in Italian named Gruppo Italiano
Disdrometria, GID, https://www.gid-net.it/, last access: 16 May 2023). GID has made
freely available a database of 1 min records of DSD collected by the
disdrometer network along the Italian peninsula. At the time of writing, the
disdrometer network was composed of eight laser disdrometers belonging to six
different Italian institutions (including research centres, universities,
and environmental regional agencies). This work aims to document the
technical aspects of the Italian DSD database consisting of 1 min
sampling data from 2012 to 2021 in a uniform standard format defined within
GID. Although not all the disdrometers have the same data record length, the
DSD data collection effort is the first of its kind in Italy, and from here
onwards, it opens up new opportunities in the surface characterization of
microphysical properties of precipitation in the perspective of climate
records and beyond. The Version 01 GID database can be downloaded at
https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6875801 (Adirosi et al., 2022), while Version
02 can be downloaded at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7708563 (Adirosi et
al., 2023). The difference among the two versions is the diameter–fall
velocity relation used for the DSD computation.
Naples metropolitan area, one of the most populous in Italy, is highly affected by severe convective storms all year round. Thunderstorm events are sometimes associated with hail precipitation that ...can cause severe damage to transport activities, especially to aviation. The aim of this work is to develop a radar-based Probability of Hail (POH) index that can help in hail risk management. To achieve this goal, an analysis of 37 thunderstorm events occurred between April 2012 and December 2014 has been carried out, using single-polarization X-Band weather radar reflectivity measurements and ground observations. In order to identify hail from radar data, a method based on VIL-Density radar product (VLD) was applied. An extensive intercomparison between the outcomes of weather radar and ground verification data has been performed using a 2×2 contingency table and statistical scores. The results show that hail is likely to occur when VLD exceed 2.6 g m -3 warning threshold. The POH index has been tested for a thunderstorm event occurred on May 26, 2012 and has proven to be particularly reliable in hail core detection.
