. The combination method accounts for the correlations of the statistical and systematic uncertainties among the different datasets. Perturbative QCD calculations are compared to the combined data. A next-to-leading order QCD analysis is performed using these data together with the combined inclusive deep inelastic scattering cross sections from HERA. The authors report the clinical and molecular findings in eight patients with hyperornithinemia, hyperammonemia, and homocitrullinuria (HHH) syndrome. The most consistent neurologic finding was ...spastic paraparesis, seen in five of the eight patients. However, all showed signs of pyramidal tract involvement. A broad spectrum of pathogenetic mutations (including missense, nonsense, splice site, insertion, and deletions) were identified in the ORNT1 gene.
To report clinical, neuroradiologic, neurophysiologic, and genetic findings on 16 patients from 11 unrelated families with a remarkable uniform phenotype characterized by infantile ascending ...hereditary spastic paralysis (IAHSP).
Sixteen patients from 11 families, originating from North Africa and Europe, who presented severe spastic paralysis and ascending progression were studied.
Spastic paraplegia started in the first 2 years of life in most patients and extended to the upper limbs by the end of the first decade. The disease progressed to tetraplegia, anarthria, dysphagia, and slow eye movements in the second decade. The clinical course showed a long survival and preservation of intellectual skills. Clinical, neuroradiologic, and neurophysiologic findings were consistent with a relatively selective early involvement of the corticospinal and corticobulbar pathways. No signs of lower motor neuron involvement were observed, whereas motor evoked potentials demonstrated predominant involvement of the upper motor neurons. MRI was normal in young patients but showed brain cortical atrophy in the oldest, predominant in the motor areas, and T2-weighted bilateral hyperintense signals in the posterior arm of the internal capsule. The ALS2 gene, recently found mutated in consanguineous Arabic families with either an ALS2 phenotype or a juvenile-onset primary lateral sclerosis, was analyzed. Alsin mutations were found in only 4 of the 10 families, whereas haplotype analysis excluded the ALS2 locus in one family.
The syndrome of IAHSP is genetically heterogeneous, and no clinical sign can help to distinguish patients with and without Alsin mutations.

. The combination method accounts for the correlations of the systematic uncertainties among the different data sets. The combined charm data together with the combined inclusive deep-inelastic scattering cross sections from HERA are used as input for a detailed NLO QCD analysis to study the influence of different heavy flavour schemes on the parton distribution functions. The optimal values of the charm mass as a parameter in these different schemes are obtained. The implications on the NLO predictions for

. The combination method used takes the correlations of systematic uncertainties into account, resulting in an improved accuracy. The combined data are the sole input in a NLO QCD analysis which determines a new set of parton distributions, HERAPDF1.0, with small experimental uncertainties. This set includes an estimate of the model and parametrisation uncertainties of the fit result.
Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SEPs) have been shown to provide prognostic information in both adults and children with acute brain injury. Aim of this study is to evaluate SEPs prospectively as a ...predictor of neurological outcome in children with ischemic brain injury. We performed SEPs in 29 consecutive patients with acute ischemic injury. SEPs were classified as bilaterally normal (SEPs-N/N), bilaterally absent (SEPs-A/A), unilaterally absent (SEPs-N/A). Ten pts have SEPs-N/N (outcome: 5 with normal outcome, 4 with epilepsy, 1 exitus); 3 pts have SEPs N/A (outcome: all with hemiparesis and one also with cognitive impairment); 15 pts with SEPs A/A (outcome: 9 exitus and 6 with tetraparesis and cognitive impairment). We suggest that SEPs may be a good predictor of neurological outcome in children with acute ischemic brain injury.
Leukodystrophies are a heterogeneous group of white matter degenerative disease characterized by variable clinical presentation. A specific neurophysiological profile of the different ...leukodystrophies has not yet been established. We investigated EEG and multimodal-EPs in various leukodystrophies, to determinate their possible role as an aid in differential and early diagnosis. 49-children were studied. From the current data, PEV (50%) and BAEPs (49%) appear among the most valuable tools, particularly in the first evaluation; EEG is extremely sensible (74%) but in long term disease; ENG is useful only in well known leukodystrophies; SEP was altered in 38% while MEP in 100% of pts (all with clear clinical pyramidal signs), ERG was altered only in 1 pt. In conclusion PEV and BAEPs appear useful in the early stages of disease, EEG in long term disease, while ENG only in selected cases. The other tools have ancillary role without clear utility.
Avian influenza (AI) is a listed disease of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) that has become a disease of great importance both for animal and human health. The increased relevance of ...AI in the fields of animal and human health has highlighted the lack of scientific information on several aspects of the disease, which has hampered the adequate management of some of the recent crises. Millions of animals have died, and there is growing concern over the loss of human lives and over the management of the pandemic potential. The present paper aims to identify areas of knowledge of veterinary competence that need to be improved in order to generate information to support the global AI crisis, and highlights the major changes in AI legislation, including regulations related to trade. It also reviews the human health implications of AI, including the mechanisms by which a human pandemic virus may be generated, and the food safety issues related to this infection. The application of control policies, ranging from stamping out to emergency and prophylactic vaccination, are discussed on the basis of data generated in recent outbreaks, and in the light of new regulations, also in view of the maintenance of good animal welfare.Poultry veterinarians working for the industry or for the public sector represent the first line of defence against the pandemic threat and for the prevention and control of this infection in poultry and in wild birds. However, given the current situation, it is imperative that close collaboration is sought and achieved by health officials involved in the veterinary, agricultural and medical aspects of the disease. Only through the exchange of data, experiences, views and information will it be possible to combat this zoonosis, which represents a major threat to public health and animal well-being.

Comparisons with available models of deep inelastic scattering, which are tuned to reproduce inclusive particle production, suggest that the measured two-particle correlations are dominated by contributions from multijet production. The correlations observed here do not indicate the kind of collective behaviour recently observed at the highest RHIC and LHC energies in high-multiplicity hadronic collisions.
Abstract
ATHENA has been designed as a general purpose detector capable of delivering the full scientific scope of the Electron-Ion Collider. Careful technology choices provide fine tracking and ...momentum resolution, high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry, hadron identification over a wide kinematic range, and near-complete hermeticity.
This article describes the detector design and its expected performance in the most relevant physics channels. It includes an evaluation of detector technology choices, the technical challenges to realizing the detector and the R&D required to meet those challenges.
