Seventy-two teeth from 10 ovarian mature teratomas and 12 unerupted and erupted teeth from subjects aged 8 to 21 years were examined at the scanning electron microscope to evaluate the morphologic ...and histogenetic differences. The ultrastructure of the teratomatous teeth was similar to that of the corresponding orthotopic tissues. Despite this similarity the morphology of the teratomatous teeth was much less well defined, attesting to the inductive effect of the contiguous tissues that are normally present in the oral cavity.

One struma ovarii with agregates of epithelial nests indistinguishable from Brenner tumor was studied. The presence of a communication between the nests and the follicles and the association of ...Brenner, mucinous and respiratory epithelium in the lining of 1 cyst in the same tumor strongly support the germ theory of Brenner tumors associated with teratomatous elements.
Three cases of clear cell carcinoma of the endometrium are here reported. Clear cell carcinoma is a rare and aggressive type of endometrial adenocarcinoma. Patients are older and are in the menopause ...much longer than are patients with typical endometrial carcinoma. This fact may reflect the presence of counterbalanced sex hormones in the process of carcinogenesis.
Endometrial reconstruction after hysteroscopic metroplasty of a septate uterus was studied by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy when the uterus was removed 13 days after metroplasty ...for a histologic diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma. We observed a retraction of the margins of the incised septum, which could prevent the formation of intrauterine adhesions. Reepithelialization of the cut surface seemed to proceed both centripetally, by proliferation of the surrounding normal endometrium, and centrifugally from the bottom of the glands present at the base of the septum.
A review of a series of 245 ovarian teratomas disclosed 6 cases (2.4%) of immature teratoma. The tumors were FIGO stage IA(i) and histologic grade 1 (3 cases). With the exception of 2 specimens, all ...tumors were larger than 9 cm in the greatest diameter. All patients underwent conservative surgery alone and are alive without evidence of disease form 2.2 to 10.6 years (average 7.9 years). Our data support the view that conservative surgery is the treatment of choice for patients with stage IA(i), grade 1, immature teratoma, as well as for those with stage IA(i), grade 2 tumors, 9 cm or less in the greatest diameter.
The clinicopathologic features of 44 serous borderline tumors (SBT) of the ovary were evaluated. Nineteen were Stages 11 and 111, and 9 had invasive peritoneal implants. All 19 patients received ...chemotherapy and 4, who had invasive implants, died of disease after 3, 4.3, 8, and 9 years. The other 25 patients were free of tumor 1‐14 years (mean, 5.3 years) after surgery. Coexpression of low molecular weight keratins (AE1, CAM 5.2) and vi‐mentin was found in all tumors and their implants. No significant differences were found between SBT with different volume‐corrected mitotic indices (M/Vi) with respect to gross features, presence or absence of implants, stage, and survival. Cytometric DNA analysis also was performed on the primary ovarian tumors and the implants. Twenty‐one primary tumors had diploid or tetra‐ploid histograms, and 23 had aneuploid histograms. DNA ploidy of the primary ovarian tumors did not correlate with gross features, the presence or absence of implants, M/Vi, stage, and survival. The data from this study confirm that most SBT are clinically benign, but SBT with invasive implants may behave aggressively. Expression of intermediate filaments, M/Vi, and DNA ploidy evaluation of the primary ovarian tumors seem to be of no value in predicting prognosis. However, four of seven patients with aneuploid DNA implants died of tumor.
Psammoma bodies were found in less than 9% of 235 cases of endometrial carcinoma, considering both biopsies and surgical specimens. They may originate in papillary adenocarcinoma and do not indicate ...a slightly infiltrating or a well-differentiated tumor. The clinical profile of patients closely resembles that of women with endometrial carcinoma, but survival appears worse.
Immune dysfunctions in endometriosis are widely documented but the effectiveness of immunotherapies for the management of the disease is still debated. Progress in this field has also been limited by ...the lack of an appropriate animal model of the disease. In this study, we created a model of endometriosis in immunocompetent mice to verify the ability of endometrium to implant in ectopic sites and to investigate the potential application of the cytokine interleukin (IL)-12 in preventing this ectopic implantation. Endometriotic lesions were induced in both C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice by inoculating syngenic endometrial fragments through a small laparotomic incision into the peritoneal space. All the animals challenged with syngenic endometrium showed evidence of peritoneal endometriosis at 3 weeks. Histologically, endometriotic lesions consisted of cystic endometrial glands surrounded by a stroma. Intraperitoneal injection of IL-12 was able to reduce total weight and total surface area of endometriotic lesions respectively of 77 and 61% in C57BL/6 and of 42 and 28% in BALB/c mice. These results demonstrate that IL-12 is able to induce a significant prevention of ectopic endometrial implantation in an in-vivo model of endometriosis. These findings support the possibility of using the immune system to generate novel therapies for the management of the disease.
